Abstract

This research investigates the local wisdom embedded in the naming of traditional herbal plants in the Nias language through a semantic analysis. The study addresses the gap in literature concerning the cultural and linguistic aspects of medicinal plant nomenclature in Nias, Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews and documentation were conducted with five Nias individuals to gather insights on traditional herbal plants. Thirty traditional plant names were identified and analyzed for their semantic attributes. Findings reveal that the names often reflect physical characteristics, medicinal properties, or cultural significance, showcasing the rich botanical knowledge and cultural heritage of the Nias people. This study not only documents these unique plant names but also underscores the influence of local wisdom on the linguistic practices of the Nias community, highlighting the interplay between language, culture, and natural environment.

Abstract

Listening is a fundamental skill in language acquisition and learning, yet it is often perceived as one of the most challenging skills by students, as this is also the case with English language classes. Listening requires significant attention and concentration to comprehend material such as dialogues and monologues. The objective of this study is to gain insight into the perceptions of students in the English Department class of 2019 regarding the difficulties they encounter in developing listening skills, as well as the factors that contribute to these difficulties. Based on initial observations and previous research, key challenges have been identified including difficulties due to physical limitations, poor audio quality, unfamiliar accents, and limited vocabulary. A qualitative research method with a narrative inquiry design was employed to explore students' experiences through in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that students struggle with listening due to a number of factors, including poor audio quality, unfamiliar accents, and limited vocabulary. The study also highlights additional challenges arising from online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on students' listening comprehension. These insights are expected to inform English language teaching practices to enhance the effectiveness of listening skills instruction.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Wordwall in enhancing vocabulary related to recount texts among eighth-grade students at SMPN 01 Gandusari. Using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design with 28 students, the research involved pre-tests, treatment, and post-tests to collect data. The validity and reliability of the test were confirmed before administering it to the respondents. Analysis using a paired sample t-test in SPSS 24.0 revealed a significant improvement in students' vocabulary scores, increasing from a pre-test average of 70.14 to a post-test average of 83.29. The results indicate that Wordwall significantly enhances students' vocabulary achievement in recount texts. The study suggests that teachers incorporate Wordwall into English lessons to make learning more engaging and compelling, potentially extending its use to other topics. Additionally, students are encouraged to review recount text materials regularly. At the same time, future research could explore student and teacher responses to Wordwall or compare its effectiveness with other language learning tools like Duolingo or Busuu.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Jamboard in enhancing the vocabulary achievement of seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Gandusari, particularly in describing places and understanding meanings, synonyms, and antonyms. The research employed a one-group pretest and post-test pre-experimental design involving 32 students. The methodology included three key phases: pretest, treatment, and post-test. Tests were used to gather data, and before administering the test to the participants, the test's reliability and validity were ensured through preliminary trials. Data analysis was conducted using paired sample t-tests with SPSS 25. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' vocabulary achievement, with scores increasing from an average of 63.63 in the pretest to 92.25 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test indicated a Sig. (2-tailed) value of less than 0.05, confirming a significant difference in learning outcomes between the pretest and post-test. This suggests that Jamboard effectively improves the vocabulary of seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Gandusari, particularly in describing places. Based on these results, it is recommended that teachers incorporate Jamboard into English language instruction to make learning more engaging. Teachers could also use Jamboard to teach other topics. Additionally, students are encouraged to regularly review vocabulary related to describing places. Future research could explore student and teacher responses to Jamboard for different subjects or compare its effectiveness with other language learning tools such as Duolingo, Baamboozle, and Beelingoapp.

Abstract

English language learning is undergoing a profound transformation with the advent of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence. This research, that conduct by narrative review method, will aim to address these gaps by synthesizing findings from the last decade of research and providing a comprehensive understanding of the current trends, challenges, and future directions in the use of AI for English language learning. Most existing studies focus on the efficacy of specific AI tools, with limited attention given to long-term effects on learners' language proficiency, retention, and socio-cultural competence. Additionally, much of the research to date has concentrated on English as a foreign language, with less emphasis on how AI can support multilingualism or the learning of English as a second language in diverse sociocultural contexts. Furthermore, there is a lack of studies that explore the ethical, cultural, and pedagogical implications of widespread AI adoption in language education, particularly in non-Western contexts. This study contributes valuable insights into the evolving landscape of the use of AI in English learning, highlighting both the promising potential and the challenges of integrating GenAI technologies. Suggestions for further research are to conduct empirical research on the concepts in this study.
