Abstract

Dental caries remains a significant health problem among young children, especially in kindergarten.Data indicate a high prevalence of caries among children aged 4-6 years in Indonesia, which is attributed to a lack of knowledge about dental hygiene, improper toothbrushing techniques, and a habit of consuming sugary foods. This community service activity was conducted as an effort to detect and prevent dental issues early on, as childhood is a critical period for establishing healthy lifestyle habits. The objectives of this activity are: (1) To conduct early detection of dental caries; (2) To enhance children's and teachers' knowledge about oral health, and (3) To train proper brushing techniques through interactive educational approaches. The community service was conducted at Dharma Wanita Kindergarten, Kediri, involving 40 children aged 4–6 years. The methods used included: (1) Dental examinations, (2) Interactive education through lectures, demonstrations of toothbrushing using audio- visual media such as videos on proper toothbrushing techniques, jaw models (phantoms), and educational games, and (3) Knowledge assessment through pretest-posttest questionnaires. Data were analysed using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that 72% of students had dental caries. Following the education, there was an improvement in students' understanding of how to maintain dental and oral health, as well as how to brush their teeth properly. The toothbrushing demonstration successfully improved the children's skills, with 95% able to practise the correct technique. Teachers responded positively to the programme. This activity was effective in increasing awareness and promoting dental health practices among preschool children. Collaboration between health workers and schools is essential for the sustainability of the programme. Recommendations: (1) Regular monitoring by the community health centre, (2) Integration of dental health materials into the early childhood education curriculum, and (3) Development of school dental health cadres.

Abstract

The production of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) in rural areas represents an effort to diversify agricultural products, which can improve the welfare of local communities by utilizing coconut as a regional natural resource. VCO offers numerous health benefits, such as boosting the immune system,  lowering cholesterol, and containing high levels of antioxidants. This community service program aims to provide the local population with the knowledge and practical skills on how to produce VCO properly. The methodology includes socialization, technical training, evaluation, and follow-up assistance. The pre- and post-test evaluation results show a significant improvement in participants' knowledge and skills. Approximately 85% of the participants understood the process of making VCO after the training, indicating the program's effectiveness. Furthermore, this initiative has opened new economic opportunities, with several participants beginning to produce and sell VCO independently. The main challenges faced include limited capital and market access. However, with continuous support and assistance from various stakeholders, this program is expected to further develop. The production of VCO presents a promising alternative to increase the income of rural communities and reduce dependence on a single agricultural commodity

Abstract

Liquid organic fertilizer offers numerous benefits, including enhancing soil fertility, promoting plant growth, and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers that can have a negative environmental impact. The Community Service Program (PKM) aims to provide information to students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 5 Kota Banda Aceh on the production and use of soursop leaf extract as a liquid organic fertilizer, as well as new knowledge for students on how to utilize natural resources in their surroundings to improve the school's economic environment. Fertilization through leaves has another advantage: nutrients are more quickly absorbed by plants through the stomata of the leaves, resulting in visible new growth, such as new shoots. The students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 5 Banda Aceh were very enthusiastic and interested in processing liquid organic fertilizer with soursop leaf extract, thereby expanding the community's knowledge and increasing the students' understanding of using soursop leaf POC as a material for making natural fertilizer.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a serious health problem in Indonesia, with cases increasing by 40% in early 2025 compared to the previous year. Wates Village, Kediri Regency, is an endemic area with the lowest Larva-Free Index (LFI) in the district (45%), necessitating comprehensive community-based intervention. The GERBEK JENTIK program aims to enhance public knowledge of DHF prevention, establish jumantik (larva monitor) cadres, and reduce larva indices through a participatory approach. Activities were carried out in three stages: (1) Interactive education and socialization; (2) Collaborative training between the community and jumantik cadres; (3) Practical demonstration of larva inspection and mass clean-up movement. The participants consisted of 46 residents of Wates Village. The program significantly improved public understanding, formed competent jumantik cadres, and reduced the larva index from 45% to 78%. Collaboration among health workers, cadres, and the community proved effective in creating sustainable change. The GERBEK JENTIK program is effective in addressing DHF through a collaborative approach. Recommendations include integrating the program into village policy, replicating the model in other endemic areas, developing a digital monitoring system, and providing ongoing mentoring every 3-6 months.

Abstract

The accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic waste in Temporary Storage Sites (TPS) is a critical issue across various regions, including Wates Village, Kediri Regency. The actively operating TPS has not been optimized for advanced management of plastic waste, thereby posing a potential environmental pollution risk. This Community Service (PkM) program aims to address this problem by innovating BOTRIK (Ecobrick Bottles) as aesthetic, sustainable field decorations. The implementation method includes four stages: (1) licensing and coordination with stakeholders; (2) preparation of materials and tools; (3) execution, consisting of collection, sorting, washing, and ecobrick production; and (4) participatory evaluation. The program involved 23 KKN students, the village government, TPS managers, and local community members. As a result, over 55 kg of plastic waste was successfully processed into approximately 175 ecobricks, which were then assembled into two permanent field decoration units in floral and geometric shapes. The impacts achieved include a significant reduction in plastic waste volume at the TPS, increased community capacity in waste management, and the creation of new aesthetic value in public spaces. The BOTRIK program not only demonstrates the effectiveness of ecobricks as a community-based waste solution but also offers a replicable model for other regions. Program sustainability is recommended through the integration of village policies, the establishment of a dedicated waste bank, and the diversification of ecobrick products with economic value.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, with a prevalence of 21.6%. This condition affects not only children’s physical growth but also their cognitive development, immune system, and quality of life in the future. One of the efforts to prevent stunting is through empowering posyandu cadres as agents of change in nutrition education and the utilization of local food. This community service activity aimed to strengthen the capacity of posyandu cadres in Patianrowo Village, Nganjuk Regency, through socialization and training on local food innovation based on soybean (Glycine max. L) in the form of nuggets as an alternative nutritious food for children. The methods included preparation, socialization on stunting and balanced nutrition, as well as hands-on practice in soybean nugget production. Evaluation was conducted through pre-test, post-test, practice observation, and focus group discussions. The results showed a significant improvement in knowledge, with the average pre-test score increasing from 55.2 to 82.7 in the post-test, and participation aspects indicated by observation scores rising from 68.0 to 88.5. The cadres successfully mastered soybean nugget processing techniques and demonstrated creativity by incorporating other local food ingredients. This activity effectively enhanced cadres’ skills and confidence in developing local food innovations, while also strengthening their role in stunting prevention. In the future, it is expected that this innovation can be sustainably adopted by the community to contribute to improving children’s nutritional status and reducing stunting rates in Patianrowo Village.

Abstract

The high rate of incomplete basic immunisation among infants and toddlers is a serious public health issue, as it increases vulnerability to preventable diseases. This community service activity was motivated by the need for immediate intervention to catch up on missed immunisation coverage and to increase parents‟ understanding of vaccination‟s importance. This activity aims to increase parents‟ knowledge about immunisation and increase participation in the basic immunisation programme for infants and toddlers in Wates Village, Kediri District. The activity was carried out using the „Vaccine Blitz Moment‟ approach, which consists of three main stages: (1) Health education through pre-tests, education, and posttests to measure knowledge improvement; (2) Health screening using standard forms to ensure vaccine recipients‟ eligibility; and (3) Immunisation Administration according to the recommended schedule. The activity involved 16 infants and toddlers and their parents. There was a significant increase in parents‟ knowledge of 102.87% (from an average pre-test score of 47.81 to a post-test score of 96.99). A total of 16 children were successfully immunised, with the highest coverage for the Penta, Polio, PCV, and RV vaccines, as well as Measles and IPV. Multi-stakeholder collaboration and a comprehensive approach proved effective in increasing parental knowledge and immunisation coverage. This model can be adopted as a strategy to catch up on immunisation in other regions.

Abstract

Oral health is an important indicator of general health, yet the prevalence of dental caries among Indonesian children remains very high. This Community Service Program (CSP) aims to increase students’ awareness and knowledge at SDN Duwet 3 Kediri. Through outreach and education, this intervention is expected to instill healthy dental habits from an early age, thereby preventing future problems. The methods used included interactive lectures, toothbrushing demonstrations, and pre- and post-test-based evaluations. A total of 29 second- and third-grade students participated in this activity. Educational materials included an introduction to oral anatomy, types and functions of teeth, causes of caries, correct toothbrushing techniques, and nutrition for healthy teeth. Pre-test results showed a low level of students’ initial knowledge, with an average score of 48.96. After the intervention, the post-test score increased to 58.96. A paired statistical test showed this increase was significant (p=0.019), proving the effectiveness of the educational program. Furthermore, students showed strong enthusiasm for practicing and were committed to implementing healthy habits daily. These findings conclude that practice-based health education is effective in instilling healthy behaviors in elementary school children. Continuation of similar programs is highly recommended to strengthen the habit of maintaining dental and oral health from an early age.
