Abstract

The title of this thesis is "Assessing the Efficacy of Utilizing Group Discussion to Enhance Students' Speaking Skill." The study was conducted among second-grade students at SMPN 1 Masbagik and falls under the category of Experimental Research. The data collection process involved a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The target population consisted of second-grade students at SMPN 1 Masbagik, all of whom exhibited a similar proficiency level in speaking skills. To determine the sample, a purposive random sampling technique was employed. The sample comprised two groups: the experimental group (XD) and the control group (XC). The Inquiry Technique was used to teach the experimental group, while the control group received instruction through the Grammar Translation Method. Each group consisted of 30 students. Notably, the experimental group demonstrated a higher post-test score compared to the pre-test score. Specifically, 15 students scored higher than the mean score of 38.7 in the pre-test. Following treatment involving the utilization of the Group Discussion technique, the experimental group exhibited improved performance, with 28 students achieving scores higher than the mean score in the post-test (46.73). Subsequently, the data was subjected to t-test calculations, yielding a value of 3.19. This t-test value exceeded the critical t-values at the 0.05 confidence level (2.021) and the 0.01 confidence level (2.704) with a degree of freedom of 58. Consequently, the null hypothesis stating that the "Group Discussion technique does not increase students' speaking skill" was rejected, while the alternate hypothesis proposing that the "Group Discussion technique increases students' speaking skill" was accepted.

Abstract

Following the policy of New Normal in the post Covid-19 Pandemic, the Indonesian government has begun introducing blended learning activities. Because of this policy, teachers have been encouraged to establish a plan for using blended learning that is aligned with the learning interests of the students. Therefore, the emphasis of this research was on the technique that the teacher and school administration employed in order to improve the English language education system after the COVID-19 outbreak. The purpose of this study was to provide a description of the approach taken by English teachers following the establishment of the new normal in the time period following the Covid-19 Pandemic. A descriptive qualitative methodology was utilized for this investigation. Participants in the study were English teachers working at SMAX, SMAY, and SMAZ schools located in Mataram City. In this particular study, the methods of data collecting that were utilized were observation, interviews, and documentation. According to the findings of the study, educators devised a variety of instructional methods in order to deal with the challenges posed by blended learning modes, which placed equal emphasis on synchronous and asynchronous learning. The findings of the research answered well the guiding research questions. The study concludes that teachers encountered significant challenges when utilizing asynchronous learning mode. The challenges arose as a consequence of insufficient student involvement as well as inadequate assistance for internet connection. As a result of the decreased amount of time allotted for learning, it was discovered that certain teachers struggle with managing their time effectively.

Abstract

Learning English is so challenging especially to native speakers whose language sounds inventories are different from English. It will have been worst when learners are not aware of their problems. This article aims at formulating pedagogical implications of the phonological problems faced by the EFL learners in pronouncing standard English. The data in this research were obtained from the pronunciation test towards 30 EFL learners, 10 from each local language background (Sasak, Sumbawan, and Bimanese). The explanation begins with describing the pronunciation problems faced by the EFL Learners during the process of acquiring English and then followed with presenting the pedagogical implications that the learners can do to cope with the problems. The first pedagogical implication is the pronunciation training of changing voiceless bilabial stop [p] to make voiced and voiceless labiodental fricative [v] and [f] of English. The second is the pronunciation training of changing voiced and voiceless dental stops [D] and [T] to make voiced and voiceless alveolar stops [d] and [t], and the third is the pronunciation training of changing front middle sound [E] to central middle sound [ə] and [ɛ]. These pedagogical implications must be under a systematic and intensive training requiring the students’ awareness.
