Abstract

Breakfast is an essential part of a healthy diet that contributes to physical and mental health. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the habit of skipping breakfast and stress levels among physics students at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The research employs a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design, involving 20 students selected through purposive sampling. Breakfast frequency data were collected using a questionnaire, while stress levels were measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). The analysis was conducted using Pearson's correlation test. The results show that the majority of students (65%) skipped breakfast 3-4 times a week, while 20% skipped breakfast every day. Pearson's correlation test revealed a significant negative relationship between breakfast skipping frequency and stress levels (r = -0.60, p < 0.05), indicating that the more frequently breakfast is skipped, the higher the stress levels experienced. These findings highlight the importance of breakfast in maintaining emotional stability and reducing stress, particularly among students facing academic pressures. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the need for regular breakfast habits to support students' mental health. Further research is recommended to explore other factors influencing stress and to increase the sample size to strengthen the generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore and identify endophytic bacteria from katuk plants (Sauropus androgynus L.) and evaluate their potential as biological control agents. A total of 14 bacterial isolates were successfully obtained from the roots, stems, and leaves of katuk plants. Safety assessments were conducted through hypersensitivity response (HR) and hemolysis (HL) tests. The HR test on tobacco plants indicated that all isolates were non-pathogenic, as no necrotic symptoms were observed. However, the hemolysis test revealed two isolates capable of forming α-hemolysis zones on blood agar, suggesting potential risks to mammals. Antibacterial activity against the plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum was evaluated using spot inoculation methods. The results showed that none of the isolates were able to inhibit the growth of R. solanacearum. Although the isolates may produce antibacterial compounds, the amounts are likely insufficient or involve unidentified active compounds. Further studies are needed to fully characterize these isolates and explore their potential applications in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Borax, or sodium tetraborate, is a dangerous chemical compound that is banned from use as a preservative in food due to its potential health risks. Wet or instant noodles are a form of processed food from wheat flour that is widely consumed and favored by various levels of society, especially in school. The addition of borax to wet noodles aims to increase the chewiness and shelf life of the noodles. This study aims to identify the presence of borax in school's snack noodles. Qualitative analysis was used as the research method with purposive sampling technique in three sub-districts, namely Tamalate, Mamajang, and Rappocini sub-districts of Makassar City. The sampling criteria were wet noodles complementing meatball snacks from street vendors in front of the gate of elementary schools, and 15 noodle samples were obtained. Qualitative analysis was carried out by organoleptic test and color change of filter paper that had been soaked in curcumin extract from turmeric. The results showed that the wet noodle samples were pale yellow to bright yellow in color with a maximum shelf life of 24 hours. The test results with turmenic paper showed no color change, so it was concluded that all noodle samples did not contain borax.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common health problems worldwide and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke. Many synthetic drugs are available to manage hypertension, but they often have significant side effects. Research on chemical compounds from natural materials that have antihypertensive activity is very important. This literature review aims to evaluate various chemical compounds that are derived from natural materials and have potential as antihypertensive agents. Some of the plants that have been identified as having active chemical compounds include Hibiscus sabdariffa which contains anthocyanins, Allium sativum (garlic) which contains allicin, and Andrographis paniculata which contains andrographin. Recent studies have shown that these compounds are effective in lowering blood pressure through various mechanisms such as vasodilation, diuresis, and inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). This study highlights the importance of using natural ingredients as a safer and more effective alternative to synthetic drugs for the management of hypertension. However, more research is needed to develop more effective drug formulations and to test their effectiveness clinically in human populations.

Abstract

Stunting can be caused by worm disease because it will interfere with the absorption of nutritional intake, especially carbohydrates and protein, in children. World Health Organization (WHO) data in 2021 reported 24% of the world’s population was infected by Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH). Worms belonging to STH are Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus). The diagnosis of intestinal worms is confirmed by microscopic examination of the feces supported by staining. This study aimed to explore and identify eosin, lugol and physiological saline and evaluate their chemical content as staining solutions to prepare stool samples. A total of 5 stool samples divided into 15 microscopic glass slide were successfully obtained from children around Politeknik Muhammadiyah Makassar. Ascaris lumbricoides was most prevalent helminth found in observations by all the three methods (eosin, lugol and physiological saline wet mount preparation). It was also observed that the young (1-10 years) were more infected because we took samples from childrens around the campus Politeknik Muhammadiyah Makassar. However all the three methods, eosin was found to be effective in coloring the egg stage of the STH parasites. Eosin for wet mount smear in examining the stool samples for detection of intestinal helminths may be routinely used which is simple, clarifying observations under the microscope and increasing the contrast between stained worm eggs and the background because these dye is an acidic compound that is able to fluoresce because it contains bromine and fluorescein so that it can color the cytoplasm and provide a contrast effect so that the boundaries between cells can be observed clearly.

Abstract

Dehydration is a condition of lack of body fluids because the amount that comes out is more than the amount of fluid that goes in, water output must be balanced with water intake, if there is an imbalance of fluids in the body, dehydration will occur. Reducing fluid consumption means the body will automatically experience dehydration, this dehydration will trigger a constant decrease in urine volume. Urine volume indicates insufficient water in the body dissolving minerals and urine. If there is not enough fluid in the urine, the bound oxalate and calcium will collect and form stones. The formation of stones is directly related to lack of fluid intake in the body. The formation of calcium oxalate crystals can cause kidney stones. Oxalate can precipitate and form calcium oxalate which cannot be absorbed by the body, resulting in insoluble salt deposits forming which cause kidney disease. In the body, oxalate will combine with calcium to form calcium oxalate crystals. To determine the appearance of calcium oxalate crystals in urine, the degree of dehydration. This type of research is qualitative research using the microscopic method. The population in this study were students, etc. Medical laboratory technology, Stikes Panrita Husada Bulukumba. There were 45 samples, 15 samples of mild dehydration, 15 samples of moderate dehydration, and 15 samples of severe dehydration. The sample in this study was a urine sample. Based on the research that has been carried out, results were obtained from 45 samples, 15 samples of mild dehydration, 15 samples of moderate dehydration, and 15 samples of severe dehydration. In severe dehydration, 1 sample was found that obtained a positive result (+) with a percentage of (6.7%).
