Abstract

This research aims to analyze the integration between linguistic aesthetics and politeness strategies by mapping the stanzas of Abdul Hamid Al-Omari's poem, Al-Barda’ah, based on the theories of majas (stylistics) and positive-negative face (pragmatics). Utilizing a qualitative approach, this study demonstrates that face-saving and face-threatening acts can be practically identified through the typological characteristics of the literary devices employed by the author. The analysis of 9 data points reveals that the orientation toward maintaining a positive face (1 datum in the aspect of attention with a caring function) is subtly manifested through Euphemism to reduce confrontational tendencies. Conversely, the preservation of a negative face (8 data points spanning aspects of freedom, not wanting to be disturbed, wanting to be respected, and anger) is realized progressively through variations of Metaphor, Symbolism, Cynicism, and Sarcasm. Through these integrative matrix findings, this study concludes that the choice of majas within the poetic structure is not merely an aesthetic embellishment, but rather the author's pragmatic instrument to assert social positioning, regulate social distance, and maintain self-esteem before the interlocutor.

Abstract

This research discusses the representation of masculine women in the film The Invitation, using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This research aims to investigate how the representation of female masculinity is portrayed in the film The Invitation through the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth. Then, several concepts related to the research, such as gender studies, masculinity, woman, masculine woman, and semiotics, are used. This research uses a qualitative method supported by semiotic and descriptive qualitative research. The data collection techniques for this research include observation, literature review, and additional sources. The result of the research is the traits and attitudes of masculine women depicted through Evie's character. The masculine traits and attitudes such as daring to take risks, resilience, assertiveness, and responsibility are shown in Evie's character. In conclusion, Evie's character exemplifies a dominant, masculine female who challenges stereotypical myths. Therefore, possessing masculine traits is entirely acceptable for women. Film is a powerful medium that can highlight the representation of women overcoming adversity and challenging prevailing stereotypes. It further represents women's vital roles within both personal and societal contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the lexical variation of Wabula Community in Southeast Sulawesi as amarker of social status in their traditional communication. This research is motivated by the limitednumber of studies that specifically examine the relationship between the choice of traditional lexiconand the social hierarchical structure in Wabula community interactions. We use a qualitative descriptivemethod with data collection through observation and interviews with traditional leaders, religiousfigures, and local communities. Data are analyzed by identifying lexicon that appears in speech andexamining its social function based on the speaker's intention adjusted to the context. This analysis usesLabov's theory on language variation and social strata, which views power relations and social statusas phenomena that influence language. In Wabula traditional practices, the choice of lexical formsfunctions as a social marker that indicates status, respect, and role in the traditional hierarchy. Theresults show that lexicons such as tabea, mande, and amanto, which are used for parabhela, imam, andthe general public, respectively, have different social functions. This variation confirms that languageserves as a marker of hierarchy, politeness, identity, and social relations in Wabula society.

Abstract

The increasing consumption of skincare coincides with the development of the industry, which has fueled competition and fraudulent practices. Amidst these conditions, the discourse of the Dokter Detektif emerges as a source of information and criticism of fraudulent skincare practices. This study aims to uncover how the discourse of the Dokter Detektif skincare review is able to shape consumer trust. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with a Fairclough critical discourse analysis approach that focuses on three dimensions, text, discursive practices, and social practices. The research data source is a skincare review video on the TikTok account @dokterdetektifhero with data in the form of the Dokter Detektif speech. Data were analyzed using description, interpretation, and explanation techniques. The results of the analysis show that all three dimensions influence each other in the construction of consumer trust. In the text dimension, the choice of vocabulary and grammar plays a role in displaying ideology, relationships, and evaluative attitudes. Furthermore, discursive practices are formed amidst the conditions of fraudulent practices as a form of education to the public through TikTok. On the social aspect, the Dokter Detektif discourse criticizes illegal practices with his knowledge as a beauty doctor. These three dimensions are interconnected to form an image and credibility that influence consumer trust. Consumers are becoming critical in using the Dokter Detektif discourse as a basis for purchasing decisions.

Abstract

This research examines the diachronic linguistic relationship between Ogan and Mentawai, two Austronesian languages in Sumatera, at the phonological and lexical levels. Using comparative-historical methods with Swadesh basic vocabulary words, this study aims to reveal sound correspondence patterns and genetic relationships between the two Austronesian languages. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using lexicostatistical methodsand phonemic correspondence analysis. The results show 20 cognate words with a kinship percentage of 18.18%, placing them in the Families of Stock category according to Crowley’s classification. Phonological analysis reveals systematic sound correspondences at word-final positions: /i/ in Ogancorresponds to /ei/ in Mentawai (ati ~ atei ‘hati’, mati ~ matei ‘mati’), and /ə/ in Ogan corresponds to /a/ in Mentawai (duə ~ dua ‘dua’, matə ~ mata ‘mata’). Despite originating from the same proto-language, geographical separation and regional isolation have caused significant lexical divergence. This research contributes to the documentation and preservation of regional languages in the Indonesian archipelago and enriches understanding of Austronesian language development inIndonesia.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the ecological crisis in Indonesia, marked by high levels of water pollution. Efforts to increase ecological awareness can be carried out through local wisdom stories with a sendang theme. This research aims to analyze ecological values in the book Boyolali Kaya Cerita with a sendang theme, including the stories of Sendang Kunti, Sendang Pitu, and Sendang Songo. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis methods and an ecocritical approach by Greg Garrard. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using an interactive model that includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the value of the earth is the most dominant, followed by the values of dwelling and animals in equal proportions. The earth value indicates a strong presence of awareness, actions, and cooperation among humans in preserving environmental sustainability. Meanwhile, dwelling and animal values illustrate the interconnection between human life, habitation, and the existence of animals. In contrast, pollution and disasters are less prominent. This indicates that human actions threatening environmental sustainability are not the primary aspect of ecological values in the three sendang stories. These findings demonstrate that the book Boyolali Kaya Cerita with a sendang theme contains relevant ecological values that can encourage awareness in maintaining environmental sustainability.
