Corrective feedback plays a crucial role in the teaching and learning process, particularly in developing students' writing skills. This research explores English language students' perceptions of lecturers' corrective feedback in writing classes and its impact on their writing motivation. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews from 15 participants. The findings reveal that students have a positive perception of the corrective feedback provided by lecturers during writing classes. They perceive the feedback as beneficial in enhancing their understanding of writing tasks and identifying areas for improvement. Notably, only 27% of students acknowledged experiencing negative emotions such as sadness, confusion, or disappointment when unable to comprehend the lecturers' feedback. Overall, students greatly appreciate the oral and written corrective feedback, as it substantially aids in developing their writing proficiency. Furthermore, the study highlights the positive impact of lecturers' feedback on students' motivation in writing, fostering enthusiasm, focus, and a willingness to learn. Abstract

This study examines the symbolic meanings conveyed through visual metaphors in the 2022 animated film Luck. Utilizing Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory, the research aims to identify and interpret the signs present within the movie. The study employs a qualitative research paradigm and a descriptive approach, collecting data through repeated viewings of the film and cataloging the identified signs as icons, indexes, or symbols per Peirce's triadic model. The analysis reveals a total of 16 signs, comprising 3 icons, 4 indexes, and 9 symbols, which are then subjected to semiotic analysis. The findings demonstrate that the iconic signs, such as the photograph of the protagonist Sam as a child, symbolize his past. Indexical signs, like the list of orphanages he resided in, indicate his nomadic upbringing. Symbolic representations, including the four-leaf clover and the leprechaun characters, signify cultural notions of luck and fortune. The pervasive use of the color green and imagery like ladybugs further reinforce the thematic exploration of luck and prosperity. Overall, the movie Luck employs a rich tapestry of visual symbols to delve into complex concepts like fate, perspective, and fortune, enhancing the narrative depth and enriching the viewing experience.

Abstract

This research aims to interpret romantic themes in Counting Crows’ Accidentally in Love by revealing the meaning of love in the lyrics of the song. It employs a descriptive qualitative research design to identify and interpret the meaning of the song. The primary data of this research was obtained from Counting Crows’ Accidentally in Love and secondary data from internet webs, journal articles, textbooks, and other online resources. The data was analyzed by using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis which consists of six steps: (a) familiarizing with the data; (b) generating initial codes; (c) searching for themes; (d) reviewing themes; (e) defining and naming themes; and (f) producing the report. The data was also interpreted by using Roland Barthes’ semiotic concept: denotation, connotation, and myth. The result of the research reveals that the song describes the author's feeling of being in accidental love when he does not know anything about love before. His feelings and experiences are associated with falling in love unexpectedly, including chaos, happiness, uncertainty, courage, hope, and magic. The meaning of his love in this song is an experience that is unexpected, full of excitement, and sometimes chaotic, but also provides deep meaning and happiness.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between self-awareness and English-speaking ability among second-grade students at SMAN 3 Majene, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the research examined 17 students selected through cluster random sampling from a population of 51. Data were collected using a self-awareness questionnaire assessing emotional awareness, self-assessment, and self-confidence, alongside a speaking ability test. Results revealed high levels of self-awareness among participants, with most reaching the "permanent" level, indicating strong self-reflection capabilities. Speaking abilities were predominantly rated as "good." However, statistical analysis showed a weak correlation between self-awareness and speaking ability, challenging the assumption of a direct link between these variables. This finding suggests that while self-awareness may contribute to internal motivation, it does not automatically translate to enhanced speaking performance in this EFL context. The study highlights the need for comprehensive pedagogical strategies that complement self-awareness development with targeted language instruction to improve EFL speaking skills effectively.

Abstract

This study delves into the challenges contemporary women face, particularly in negotiating societal expectations, spiritual support in relationships, and the balance between education, career, and marriage. Through an analysis of the characters Jo and Amy in Greta Gerwig's "Little Women," it aims to explore these complexities and offer insights into modern women's perspectives on life. The research draws on the film "Little Women" (2019) and a range of literary sources, including research papers, journals, and publications. By examining the educational backgrounds, marital experiences, motivations, and thoughts of Jo and Amy, the study investigates the nuanced struggles and aspirations of women in different facets of life. The findings reveal that feminist ideology intersects with various dimensions of women's struggles, encompassing aspirations for freedom, education, marital rights, and happiness. Jo and Amy confront significant obstacles reflective of 19th-century challenges, compounded by societal norms that tethered women's happiness to male support, hindering their pursuit of independence. The study emphasized the continuing relevance of the discourse of feminists by exposing the challenges faced by women in Little Woman. Through an exploration of Jo and Amy's journeys, it emphasizes the ongoing struggle for autonomy and fulfillment in women's lives across historical contexts.

Abstract

Writing is a critical skill for English language learners, enabling them to express ideas effectively. This study investigates the narrative writing abilities of second-grade students at SMPN 5 Wonomulyo, Indonesia, focusing on five key aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. Employing a mixed-method approach, data were collected through writing tests and teacher interviews. The findings reveal that a majority of students (60%) failed to meet the minimum standard of writing proficiency. Content and vocabulary were identified as the most challenging aspects, with many students struggling to generate coherent ideas and use appropriate language. Interviews with the teacher highlighted contributing factors, including limited vocabulary, lack of practice, and reliance on conventional teaching methods. The study emphasizes the need for innovative, student-centered approaches to enhance narrative writing skills, such as collaborative writing exercises, peer feedback, and digital storytelling tools. Vocabulary enrichment and regular writing practice are also critical for improving performance. This research contributes to the body of knowledge on EFL writing and offers practical recommendations for improving teaching practices.

Abstract

Slang represents a dynamic and informal aspect of language, often reflecting cultural identity and creativity. This study examines the types and meanings of slang words used in six episodes of the Wednesday series (2022), aiming to explore their linguistic and pedagogical significance. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on Miles and Huberman’s content analysis framework, the study categorizes slang words into four types: coinage, blending, clipping, and acronyms. Coinage emerged as the most frequently used type, contributing to the series' authenticity and narrative depth, while blending, clipping, and acronyms provided linguistic variety. The findings highlight the potential of popular media as a resource for EFL learning, offering learners exposure to authentic informal communication. Slang enhances vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, and cultural understanding, making it a valuable tool for bridging formal education and real-world language use. However, the study’s scope is limited to six episodes, leaving room for future research to explore additional contexts and pedagogical outcomes. This research underscores the relevance of incorporating media into language instruction, providing practical insights for educators and learners. By analyzing the interplay between slang and media, the study contributes to applied linguistics and supports innovative approaches in EFL pedagogy.

Abstract

Advertising serves as a key medium for promoting products, often conveyed through posters, images, or videos. The language and visuals in advertisements significantly shape consumers’ perceptions of the product's effectiveness. This study examines the verbal and non-verbal signs in L'Oréal Paris skincare video advertisements, using a qualitative approach supported by Saussure's semiotic theory and Barthes' framework on connotation and denotation. Data were analyzed through observation and interpretation to uncover how advertisements convey meaning. The findings reveal that the representation of beauty in L'Oréal Paris advertisements transcends skin tone, emphasizing the ideal of flawless skin. Models of diverse skin tones are consistently presented, showcasing a universal aspiration for radiant, blemish-free, and well-maintained skin. The study highlights how both verbal elements, such as slogans and product descriptions, and non-verbal cues, including colors, visuals, and models, contribute to crafting a compelling message. This research provides insights into how semiotics enhances the communication of beauty ideals, offering implications for advertising strategies aimed at inclusivity and universal appeal.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the use of speech acts in Ethel Cain's Strangers and Sun Bleached Flies from her acclaimed album Preacher's Daughter. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design that focuses on the analysis of Searle's speech act classification—declaratives, representatives, directives, expressives, and commissives—to uncover how Cain conveys complex emotional narratives related to trauma, identity, and familial relationships. This research uses library research to collect data from the lyrics of two of Ethel Cain’s selected songs, Strangers and Sun Bleached Flies. The data analysis process aligns with typical approaches in speech act analysis within linguistics, particularly in contexts where John Searle's taxonomy is applied to literary or artistic works like song lyrics. The findings reveal that speech acts are very useful for deciphering the complex meaning of music lyrics and suggest that Cain's nuanced use of language not only enhances the emotional depth of her music but also invites listeners to engage with themes of vulnerability and resilience. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of contemporary songwriting as a form of expressive communication.
