Abstract

Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) remain a major health problem in children under five. One of the risk factors associated with ARI is exposure to cigarette smoke. This study aimed to examine the relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke and the incidence of ARI among children under five at Kapasa Health Center, Makassar City, in 2024. Methods: This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 44 parents or family members of children under five were recruited using a non-probability sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square statistical test to determine the association between exposure to cigarette smoke and the incidence of ARI. Results: The Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.022, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05. This finding indicates a statistically significant relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke and the incidence of ARI in children under five. Conclusion: Exposure to cigarette smoke is significantly associated with the occurrence of ARI in children under five at Kapasa Health Center, Makassar City. Preventive measures to reduce children’s exposure to cigarette smoke are urgently needed to lower the risk of ARI.

Abstract

Background: The World Health Organization reports that 5–25% of preschool children experience minor brain dysfunction, including impaired fine motor development. Achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasizes “nurturing care” to support early childhood development, as developmental deviations remain a leading cause of morbidity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Sisfor-Bidanku application in the early detection of child development. Method: A pretest–posttest design was conducted at Integrated Health Service Posts (Posyandu) in the Campalagian Polewali Mandar Community Health Center area during August–September 2019. Using purposive sampling, 20 midwives were recruited and trained to apply the Sisfor-Bidanku application in child development screening. Data were collected using questionnaires comparing the ease of use between the application and conventional media. Statistical analysis was performed with the Mann–Whitney test. Results: Twelve midwives (60%) reported that the Sisfor-Bidanku application was easier to use compared to only five midwives (25%) using conventional methods. However, the Mann–Whitney test showed no significant difference between the two media (p = 0.080). Conclusion: Although no statistically significant difference was found, more midwives perceived the Sisfor-Bidanku application as easier to use, suggesting its potential as a supportive tool for early detection of child development.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, particularly in low-resource and geographically isolated areas such as Papua, Indonesia. Medication adherence among children and adolescents is crucial to achieving successful treatment outcomes and preventing drug resistance. However, adherence rates remain suboptimal due to various individual, familial, and healthcare-related factors. This study aimed to identify factors associated with medication adherence among children and adolescents with TB undergoing treatment at the Agats Public Health Center, Asmat Regency, South Papua.. Methods: A quantitative analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from November to December 2024. The study included all 35 pediatric and adolescent TB patients registered at the health center, using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through validated questionnaires measuring knowledge, attitude, family support, the role of healthcare workers, and medication adherence using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-square test at a 95% confidence level (p ≤ 0.05). Results: Most respondents had low knowledge (77.1%), negative attitudes (85.7%), and poor family support (77.1%), while the majority perceived the role of healthcare workers as good (82.9%). Significant associations were found between knowledge (p = 0.033), attitude (p = 0.000), and the role of healthcare workers (p = 0.000) with medication adherence. Family support was not significantly associated with adherence (p = 0.068). Conclusion: Knowledge, attitude, and the role of healthcare workers significantly influence medication adherence among children and adolescents with TB. Although family support was not statistically significant, it remains an important contextual factor. Strengthening community-based health education, enhancing healthcare worker engagement, and empowering families are recommended to improve treatment adherence and outcomes, particularly in remote settings such as South Papua.

Abstract

Background: Prolonged labor is one of the most common complications experienced by women during childbirth and remains a significant contributor to maternal and neonatal morbidity. Globally, prolonged labor is estimated to occur in approximately 17% of all deliveries, with nearly 70% of these cases requiring medical interventions such as cesarean section. In Indonesia, the incidence of prolonged labor is estimated at around 9% of all deliveries. Maternal factors such as age and parity are considered important determinants influencing labor outcomes. Therefore, identifying the relationship between these factors and prolonged labor is essential to improve maternal health services. This study aimed to determine the association between maternal age and parity and the incidence of prolonged labor at the Kassi-Kassi Community Health Center in 2024. Methods: This study employed an analytic approach using a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of mothers who delivered at the Kassi-Kassi Community Health Center in 2024. A total of 23 mothers were selected as the study sample using probability (random) sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test to examine the relationship between maternal age and parity with the incidence of prolonged labor. A significance level of p < 0.05 was applied. Results: The analysis showed a significant association between maternal age and the incidence of prolonged labor (p = 0.001; p < 0.05). Additionally, maternal parity was significantly associated with prolonged labor (p = 0.002; p < 0.05). These findings indicate that both maternal age and parity are important factors related to the occurrence of prolonged labor at the Kassi-Kassi Community Health Center. Conclusion: Maternal age and parity are significantly associated with the incidence of prolonged labor at the Kassi-Kassi Community Health Center in 2024. Strengthening maternal care services, particularly through closer monitoring of high-risk pregnant women, is recommended to reduce the occurrence of prolonged labor and improve maternal health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: The management of slow moving drugs in hospital pharmacy installations often faces problems in the form of overstock, high inventory values, increased risk of expiration, and low inventory turnover. This study aims to analyze the effect of the application of Min-Max Stock Level (MMSL) on the efficiency of slow moving drug management in the Pharmaceutical Installation of General Hospital Muslimat Ponorogo which is measured through inventory value, expiration rate, storage cost, and inventory turnover. Methods: Quantitative research design of the case control approach. MMSL implementation independent variables (before and after implementation). Dependent variables are inventory value, drug expiration value, storage cost, and turnover ratio (TOR). Data analysis was carried out descriptively and inferentially using the Mann-Whitney U test for variables that are not normally distributed and independent t-test for the TOR variable that is normally distributed. Result: The results of the analysis showed that in the inventory value variable, Mann-Whitney U = 90,000, Z = –0.933, and p = 0.351 (>0.05), so that there was no significant effect of the application of MMSL on the inventory value. In the storage cost variable, identical results were obtained (U = 90,000; Z = –0.933; p = 0.351), which also showed no significant differences between groups. Meanwhile, the expiration value variable showed a very significant difference with U = 17,500, Z = –4,015, and p < 0.001, which means that there is a significant influence of the application of MMSL on the decrease in the value of losses due to expired drugs. For the variable turnover ratio (TOR), the results of the independent t-test showed p = 0.136 (>0.05), so there was no significant effect of the application of MMSL on TOR. Conclusion: The implementation of MMSL significantly reduces losses due to expired drugs but does not significantly affect inventory value, storage costs, or turnover ratio.
