Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of risk communication and community engagement as strategies to mitigate the pervasive issues of kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria. The study is grounded in Situational Crisis Communication Theory. A descriptive survey was employed as the research design to collect data from 400 respondents across five local government areas in southern Taraba. The study found that media anti-terrorism campaigns and the issuance of early warning signals to communities were the most effective risk communication and community engagement strategies used to mitigate the spate of kidnapping and banditry in southern Taraba. However, the effectiveness of the aforementioned strategies was limited by inadequate support from the government and poor media collaboration with other relevant stakeholders. Among other recommendations, the study suggests that mass media should engage community members more frequently in discussions about security matters alongside security experts in order to narrow the communication gap between the two groups. Additionally, security agencies need to fully recognize the media as partners in progress in curbing insecurity in Nigeria, as traditional military approaches have proven insufficient in combating insecurity.

Abstract

This study examines the internal quality assurance (IQA) practices at Gondar University, one of Ethiopia’s oldest and largest public universities. Despite its long history dating back to 1954 as a public health training institution, the university has faced challenges in institutionalizing a comprehensive Quality Assurance system. The establishment of the Education Quality Assurance and Audit Directorate (EQAAD) in 2003 marked a significant step towards formalizing Internal Quality Assurance processes. Through qualitative data collected via interviews and document analysis, this research explores the achievements, key focus areas, challenges, and gaps in the university's Quality Assurance framework. Among its accomplishments are the development of the Education Quality Improvement Package (EQIP), hosting national QA conferences, conducting graduate tracer studies, and implementing self-audits and program evaluations. However, the study reveals systemic challenges including limited staffing capacity, insufficient financial resources, inconsistent implementation of QA procedures, and minimal involvement of top management and academic staff in routine QA activities. Structural and procedural weaknesses such as unclear leadership roles, lack of reward mechanisms, and under emphasis on research and community engagement were also identified. The findings highlight the need for stakeholder engagement, policy innovation, and resource mobilization to strengthen the QA culture. The study concludes that while Gondar University has laid a foundation for quality enhancement, sustained institutional commitment is essential for meaningful improvement.

Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which perceived partiality in policing influences crime reporting behavior among residents of Wukari. A descriptive, cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. From a population of 374,800, a sample size of 400 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula. Questionnaires were distributed to the selected participants through random sampling, and 350 were successfully retrieved for analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentages, means, and standard deviations). The findings revealed that the level of crime reporting in Wukari is low. The results also indicated that police favouritism, particularly in favoring wealthy, influential, or famous individuals, has a significant negative impact on crime reporting. Marginalized groups often refrain from reporting crimes due to fear of neglect or retaliation. Statistical analysis showed significant correlations between various dimensions of police favouritism and crime reporting, confirming that favouritism erodes public trust and weakens police-community cooperation. The study recommends that the Nigeria Police Force adopt community-oriented policing strategies to rebuild trust, institutionalize ethics and anti-bias training for officers, and implement transparent accountability mechanisms to ensure equitable treatment of all citizens.

Abstract

Exit exams in higher education have become central tools for assessing students' readiness for professional roles or advanced academic pursuits, aiming to uphold accountability, standardization, and quality assurance across educational systems. Designed to evaluate mastery of discipline-specific knowledge, skills, and competencies, their implementation has sparked ongoing debate about their effectiveness and equity. This systematic literature review synthesizes findings from 33 peer-reviewed studies to examine both the advantages and challenges associated with exit exams. The review identifies that exit exams enhance transparency, promote comparability, and align academic outcomes with labor market expectations. However, they also present significant drawbacks, including the risk of over-standardization, elevated psychological stress, and reinforcement of systemic biases. Marginalized student populations are often disproportionately affected, as high-stakes testing can deepen existing educational inequalities and promote surface-level learning due to a "teaching to the test" approach. Technical limitations in digital exam delivery and uneven access to preparatory resources further undermine equitable assessment. Nevertheless, exit exams can offer constructive feedback to both learners and institutions, supporting curricular refinement and improving graduate employability. The review advocates for a more balanced and inclusive assessment model that integrates formative evaluations, leverages flexible technological platforms, and considers student mental well-being. By aligning exit exam practices with holistic educational goals and incorporating qualitative metrics, institutions can develop fairer, more effective frameworks that serve diverse student populations and drive continuous improvement in higher education.

Abstract

Despite the importance of critical thinking in science education, junior high schools often lack effective instructional models that engage students with real-world environmental issues. One such issue, fish waste management, remains underutilised as a learning context, despite its relevance to local communities. This study investigates the effectiveness of project-based learning (PjBL) assisted by e-worksheets in fostering students’ critical thinking skills through the topic of fish waste processing. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 30 seventh-grade students in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Pre- and post-tests were administered to measure five core indicators of critical thinking: problem identification, information sourcing, hypothesis formulation, clarification, and solution generation. The results, analysed using SPSS 25.0, showed significant improvements across all indicators. For instance, accurate problem identification responses increased from 0% to 47%, and logical hypothesis construction improved from 0% to 37%. Students also reported greater engagement with the digital worksheets, which featured multimedia content, simulations, and open-ended questions. The findings indicate that e-worksheet-assisted PjBL is an effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing students’ analytical thinking, environmental literacy, and meaningful learning engagement across science education contexts.

Abstract

One of the key challenges in 21st-century education is students' limited ability to address complex, real-world problems, particularly those related to global environmental issues. Complex Problem Solving (CPS) has been identified as an essential skill for navigating such challenges; however, CPS proficiency among Indonesian students remains relatively low, especially in the context of environmental awareness. This study aims to develop a differentiated STEM-integrated electronic worksheet (e-worksheet) designed to enhance CPS skills and foster environmental awareness among junior high school students. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on Thiagarajan’s 4D model, Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate, the study began with a needs analysis involving 15 teachers and 200 students from nine schools in Lampung Province. The STEM-based e-worksheet was developed with a focus on CPS indicators and environmental themes. Implementation was conducted with 26 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 12 Bandar Lampung. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed using normalized gain (n-gain) and effect size metrics. Results showed that the use of the e-worksheet significantly improved students’ CPS abilities, with an n-gain of 0.56 (moderate) and an effect size of 4.12 (high), indicating substantial progress across all CPS dimensions. These findings highlight the potential of differentiated, STEM-oriented digital learning tools to enhance critical 21st-century skills and support environmental education at the junior secondary level.
