Abstract

This study addresses the underexplored integration of cultural heritage education within vocational tourism programs in Indonesia, focusing on its role in cultural preservation and youth empowerment. It investigates the development dynamics, internal readiness, and stakeholder perceptions of the Pottery Class at the Teaching Factory of SMKN 2 Sukawati as a model of culturally embedded educational tourism. Employing a qualitative design, the research sampled 50 participants, including students, teachers, tourists, and local artisans selected via purposive sampling. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews, participant observation, questionnaires, and document analysis, followed by thematic analysis. Findings indicate that cultural learning motivates 78% of tourists, while the program enhances students’ cultural confidence and entrepreneurial interest. However, challenges persist in marketing, language barriers, and public awareness. These outcomes support experiential learning and cultural tourism theories. The study concludes that the Pottery Class effectively bridges vocational education and cultural tourism, advancing both heritage preservation and economic development objectives. Theoretically, it contributes to understanding school-based tourism models, while practically, it offers recommendations for policymakers, educators, and tourism stakeholders to improve program packaging, forge strategic partnerships, and incorporate digital cultural storytelling. Future research directions include comparative analyses of similar programs in diverse cultural contexts and evaluation of long-term tourist learning outcomes.

Abstract

Low science literacy among Indonesian students, as evidenced by international assessments like PISA, underscores the urgent need to enhance their ability to connect scientific knowledge with societal issues. This challenge is exacerbated by a shortage of assessment tools that integrate scientific concepts with real-world phenomena, limiting students’ capacity to apply science in addressing social problems. This study aimed to develop a socioscientific issues (SSI)-based science literacy assessment tool targeting junior high school students on the topics of heat, thermal expansion, and temperature. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach following the 4-D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), the study began with a needs analysis involving 15 teachers and 200 students across nine schools in Lampung Province. Guided by these findings, an SSI-based assessment instrument was designed and subjected to expert validation of content, construct, and language. The tool was then pilot-tested on 25 seventh-grade students at MTs N 3 South Lampung. Pre- and post-test evaluations revealed a significant increase in science literacy scores, from an average of 42.79 to 79.42. N-gain analysis indicated moderate improvement (0.64), while Cohen’s d demonstrated a large effect size (2.70), confirming the tool’s efficacy. The study concludes that the SSI-based assessment effectively enhances students’ conceptual understanding and their ability to relate scientific principles to real-world contexts. It further recommends extending the tool’s application to other science topics and diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study explores Islamic architecture as a holistic civilizational product shaped by the intricate interplay of religious, social, political, economic, and environmental factors. Rather than being a mere stylistic or aesthetic tradition, Islamic architecture is positioned as a dynamic expression of the Muslim Ummah’s identity and its contextual interactions. The research aims to analyze how these diverse factors have contributed to the development of a distinct architectural language and to evaluate the extent of influence from earlier civilizations, such as the Roman and Byzantine without compromising core Islamic values. The central research question investigates whether Islamic architecture can authentically represent Muslim identity and serve as a viable foundation for contemporary architectural practice. Employing an analytical and critical methodology, the study examines various architectural models within their historical and cultural contexts. The findings reveal that Islamic architecture reflects a balanced civilizational consciousness, integrating functionality with aesthetic and spiritual values. Moreover, it presents environmentally responsive and ethically grounded alternatives that can inform and enrich modern architectural development.

Abstract

Public relations is a critical tool for guiding national affairs and addressing public health challenges. This study evaluates the public relations strategies employed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for sensitization on COVID-19 prevention during the 2020 pandemic. The primary objective was to assess the extent, effectiveness, and scope of NCDC's public relations efforts in raising awareness and influencing preventive behavior. Adopting a cross-sectional survey research design, the study utilized questionnaires administered to a sample of 317 respondents selected through both random and purposive sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, and the Extended Parallel Processing Model (EPPM) was employed as the theoretical framework. Findings revealed that 35.3% and 24% of respondents strongly agreed and agreed, respectively, that the NCDC deployed its public relations and sensitization strategies to a significant extent and in a comprehensive manner. Additionally, 62.1% of respondents affirmed the effectiveness of these strategies in enhancing public awareness and behavior change, contributing to the flattening of the COVID-19 curve, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)—a high-risk area due to its exposure to travel-related transmission. The study concludes that public relations played a pivotal role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and recommends the continuous engagement of an active and well-trained public relations department at both national and state levels of the NCDC. Sustained communication efforts beyond health crises are essential to maintaining public trust and preparedness.

Abstract

Abstract This study explores the evolution of mosque architecture in Islamic civilization by analyzing its structural elements, functional roles, and symbolic meanings. It emphasizes the mosque’s significance not only as a place of worship but also as a central social and urban institution within Islamic society. Despite centuries of architectural change, the mosque has preserved its unique identity and spiritual essence. Drawing on selected examples from the Islamic East, the Maghrib, and al-Andalus, the study examines defining features such as domes, minarets, Mihrabs, Minbars, and ornamental details. The core question addresses how Islamic architecture has remained rooted in religious principles while interacting with a range of cultural and artistic influences. Employing a descriptive and comparative approach, the research contends that mosque architecture represents a dynamic tradition—firmly anchored in Islamic values yet adaptive to historical shifts and regional contexts, reflecting the civilization’s openness to other cultures without compromising its distinctive identity.

Abstract

This study examines the regulatory policy governing Public Relations (PR) practice in Nigeria, with a focus on its effectiveness in promoting ethical standards and professionalism. Adopting a survey research design, the study is anchored on the Excellence Theory and the Synergistic Communication for Development (SCD) model, which together emphasize strategic communication and collaborative development approaches. A sample of 333 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane sample size formula, and data were collected using structured questionnaires. Findings reveal that a majority of respondents believe the application of regulatory policies in PR practice encourages adherence to global standards and discourages ethical violations. Furthermore, the implementation of these policies has contributed to a reduction in unprofessional practices, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of regulatory frameworks in the Nigerian PR industry. The study concludes that regulatory policies are largely effective in promoting professionalism in PR practice. It recommends, among other measures, that regulatory bodies streamline administrative registration processes to encourage wider enrollment and compliance, ultimately fostering a more ethical and standardized PR profession in Nigeria.

Abstract

This study assesses community relations strategies and their impact on rural development in Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Utilizing a survey research design, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 410 respondents. The findings reveal that two-way communication and the sponsorship of community development projects, such as schools, hospitals, and roads are the most prominent community relations strategies employed by public and private organizations in the region. These strategies have proven effective in strengthening the relationship between organizations and their host communities. The study concludes that community relations are essential in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation, thereby contributing significantly to rural development. It recommends that organizations adopt a participatory and two-way communication approach when designing and implementing community relations programs. Additionally, the sustainability and maintenance of community projects should be prioritized to preserve community trust. Finally, the study emphasizes that community relations should be proactive rather than reactive, aiming to prevent conflict and promote long-term, harmonious engagement between organizations and rural communities.

Abstract

Indonesia's accession as a full member of the BRICS in January 2025 marks strategic progress in its autonomous and proactive foreign policy, aiming to improve its economic and geopolitical position globally. The BRICS, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, serves as a forum to strengthen economic collaboration, defence diplomacy, and global security. This study analyses the impact of Indonesia's BRICS membership on the defence sector, emphasising its economic advantages, technology transfer, and enhancement of its diplomatic position. This research uses qualitative methodologies, analyses official documents, BRICS foreign policy, and reports from the Indonesian Ministry of Defence to ensure that access to the New Development Bank (NDB) facilitates infrastructure development in the fields of transportation and energy, thereby indirectly improving the operational efficiency of the military. Bilateral collaboration with BRICS countries, including Russia and China, facilitates the transfer of advanced military technologies, including weapons systems and training, thereby enhancing Indonesia's defence capabilities. In addition, BRICS membership allows Indonesia to advocate for more inclusive reforms in global economic governance, thereby enhancing its position as a link between developing countries and major economic powers. However, challenges such as potential tensions with Western allies, the risk of foreign technology dependence, and the need to maintain a balance of non-aligned policies require careful diplomacy strategies. By taking advantage of investment, trade, and BRICS multilateral forum opportunities, Indonesia can strengthen economic sovereignty and national security while becoming a key actor in regional stability. The study concludes that BRICS membership offers multidimensional opportunities for Indonesia, but long-term success depends on the ability to maintain diplomatic balance and develop a domestic defence industry to reduce asymmetric dependencies.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of defense diplomacy in enhancing bilateral relations between Indonesia and France, with particular emphasis on defense equipment procurement as a strategic instrument. Grounded in neorealism, cooperative security theory, and the concept of defense diplomacy, the research explores how Indonesia’s acquisition of French military platforms, including Rafale fighter jets and Scorpène-class submarines, extends beyond arms transactions to encompass trust-building, capability development, and regional power balancing. Employing a qualitative case study approach supported by policy analysis, defense agreements, and secondary literature, the study demonstrates that defense procurement has strengthened bilateral strategic alignment while advancing Indonesia’s military modernization agenda. The findings indicate that defense diplomacy can serve as an effective bridge between hard power imperatives and soft power engagement, particularly within the increasingly contested Indo-Pacific context. This research contributes to scholarly debates on middle power diplomacy and underscores the multidimensional value of defense cooperation in achieving foreign policy and security objectives.

Abstract

This study examines the combined influence of pedagogical practices and psychological factors on the development of English speaking skills among university students in El Salvador. Persistent challenges in oral proficiency were addressed through a quantitative, correlational research design, using a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 32 students at a private university. Statistical analysis revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.888, p < 0.001) between speaking skill development and the interaction of communicative teaching methodologies with psychological factors such as anxiety, confidence, and fear. The findings indicate that interactive approaches, including flipped classrooms and activity-based learning, together with supportive environments that reduce emotional barriers, significantly enhance students’ oral performance. The study highlights the importance of teacher training and curriculum design that combine methodological innovation with psychological support, ensuring more effective language acquisition. These results contribute to the improvement of English language education by offering evidence-based recommendations to strengthen speaking proficiency in EFL contexts similar to El Salvador.
