Abstract

This study assesses public perception of broadcast media coverage of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the 2023 gubernatorial election in Adamawa State, Nigeria. Employing a survey research design, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a sample size of 400 respondents, drawn from a population of 2,196,566. Perception theory served as the theoretical framework, offering insights into how the public interprets and evaluates media content. The findings reveal that 69% of respondents identified talk shows as the most prominent form of broadcast programming used in the coverage, followed by political music jingles. Additionally, the public perceived broadcast media to have employed mild and non-inciting frames and to have maintained objectivity in their reportage of INEC's conduct during the election. The study concludes that public perception of broadcast coverage was largely favorable, attributing this to the media’s professional and impartial approach, which in turn fostered public trust. It recommends that broadcast media continue to employ balanced and non-provocative frames when reporting on electoral matters. Furthermore, the government is urged to implement policies that ensure media security, particularly during the coverage of sensitive electoral processes, to sustain positive public engagement and trust.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of celebrity endorsements on students’ purchasing decisions at Shankardev Campus. Adopting a deductive approach within a positivist paradigm, the research integrates descriptive and causal designs to examine the impact of celebrity attributes on consumer behavior. Primary data were collected from 115 students through structured questionnaires, capturing perceptions of celebrity appeal, credibility, and brand influence. Statistical techniques, including mean analysis, correlation, and regression, were employed to assess relationships and predict the effects of these attributes on purchase intentions. The results indicate that expertise is the most influential endorsement characteristic in shaping buying behavior, surpassing appeal and credibility. These findings underscore the importance of selecting endorsers with strong perceived knowledge and credibility to enhance marketing effectiveness. The study adds to the literature on celebrity endorsements in emerging markets, with specific relevance to Nepal, and provides actionable insights for advertisers seeking to engage young, socially active consumers.

Abstract

This study evaluates the dynamics of electoral zoning in Nigeria in the context of the 2023 Cross River State gubernatorial election, analyzing how zoning politics intersect with public persuasion to shape electoral outcomes. Situated within a qualitative interpretivist paradigm, the research draws on in-depth interviews with key political actors and prospective voters. Guided by Agenda Setting and Social Judgment theories, the analysis examines the media’s influence in framing zoning debates and the electorate’s attitudinal responses to competing narratives. Findings reveal a nuanced relationship between historical zoning arrangements and shifting voter preferences, where loyalty to senatorial districts persists alongside an increasing demand for competence and visionary leadership beyond geographic identity. While zoning remains a strong determinant of political expectations, particularly benefiting the Southern Senatorial District, party ideology and candidate credibility emerge as equally decisive factors. The study also cautions against divisive ethnic rhetoric, emphasizing that failure to foster unity could threaten democratic stability in the state.

Abstract

This systematic literature review explores the integration of Heavy Metal music as a motivational tool in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL), addressing an innovative yet underexplored area within pedagogical research. Drawing on three peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025 and selected through the PRISMA framework, the review examines pedagogical strategies, educational benefits, and implementation challenges associated with using Heavy Metal music in EFL classrooms. The analysis reveals that Heavy Metal’s rich lexical content, rhythmic complexity, and cultural resonance significantly enhance learner engagement, vocabulary acquisition, and phonological awareness—particularly among advanced learners at B2 to C2 levels of the CEFR. Additionally, its emotionally expressive lyrics and dynamic musical structure contribute to a low-anxiety, inclusive classroom environment, supporting principles of culturally responsive teaching. Despite these advantages, barriers such as limited empirical research, the lyrical complexity of the genre, and the lack of structured pedagogical models impede broader adoption. The review highlights the need for longitudinal studies, genre-specific frameworks, and investigations into learner diversity to better understand the long-term effects and practical applications of this approach. Overall, the findings offer evidence-based insights for educators aiming to implement innovative, student-centered strategies that leverage the motivational potential of Heavy Metal music to enrich EFL instruction.

Abstract

This study analyzes Indonesia’s defence diplomacy towards Fiji through the combined lenses of neorealism and soft power to explain Jakarta’s strategic conduct in the South Pacific. In a regional environment where states prioritize security and survival, Indonesia’s engagement with Fiji represents a calculated, non-coercive approach to advancing national interests, particularly regarding the Papua issue. Defence diplomacy initiatives include officer training programmes, high-level visits, joint military exercises, and institutionalised strategic dialogues designed to promote trust, transparency, and mutual understanding. Empirical evidence highlights the participation of Fijian officers in Indonesia’s Army Staff and Command College and Peacekeeping Centre, as well as bilateral commitments to expand cooperation across the army, navy, and air force. These activities have coincided with a moderation of Fiji’s stance on Papua in regional forums, aligning more closely with Indonesia’s position. Humanitarian assistance, capacity-building measures, and regional security collaboration have further enhanced Indonesia’s diplomatic image and supported its free and active foreign policy. The study concludes that Indonesia’s defence diplomacy towards Fiji serves both as a structural security strategy and a normative engagement tool, generating mutual benefits while strengthening Jakarta’s strategic influence in the Pacific.

Abstract

The development of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has brought significant social and economic changes, influencing the rational choices of the surrounding transition communities, particularly hawkers. This study examines the level of rationality and skill readiness of hawkers affected by the tourism-driven transformation in the Mandalika circuit area and its buffer villages. Employing a qualitative approach through interviews and observations, the analysis reveals that hawkers’ rationality in adapting to economic shifts is shaped by factors such as knowledge, experience, work networks, and access to social and financial capital. The study also integrates Islamic perspectives, highlighting the principles of honesty (sidq), diligence (ijtihad), and responsibility (amanah) as critical values that enable traders to compete more effectively in a dynamic business environment. Findings provide insights into the adaptive strategies of the transitional community in the Mandalika SEZ and serve as a reference for policymakers to design support programs grounded in Islamic values, aimed at enhancing rational decision-making and skill preparedness in response to economic change.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between informal enterprises and rural poverty in Taraba State, Nigeria, within the context of widespread deprivation marked by hunger, malnutrition, inequality, and infrastructural deficits, particularly in rural communities. Guided by the rational choice paradigm, the research explores how informal sector activities can serve as a viable strategy for poverty alleviation. Data were collected from business premises in five areas of Jalingo metropolis: ATC, Mile 6, Mayo Dassa, Mayo Gwoi, and Magami, selected for their distinctive characteristics and concentration of informal economic activities. Statistical tables were used for data presentation, while a descriptive approach was employed for analysis. Findings reveal that informal enterprises, when encouraged and properly coordinated, can significantly contribute to reducing rural poverty. The study recommends that policymakers provide financial support, essential infrastructure, and an enabling environment for informal sector growth, as it holds substantial potential for minimizing poverty levels in rural communities.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of social media advertising in shaping consumer patronage in Abuja, Nigeria, with a focus on MTN’s advertising strategies. Guided by the technological determinism theory, the study sought to determine whether MTN’s social media advertising creates adequate awareness of its products and services and whether it effectively inspires consumer patronage. A survey research design was employed using an online questionnaire administered to a sample of 384 respondents. Findings revealed that respondents are widely exposed to social media, and MTN’s social media advertising successfully creates awareness of its products and services. The advertisements were also found to significantly influence consumer patronage, with Facebook emerging as the most effective platform in inspiring consumer engagement, although its effectiveness was rated at an average level. The study concludes that MTN’s social media advertising is effective in both awareness creation and driving patronage, thereby positioning social networking sites as crucial tools for brand competitiveness in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. It recommends that advertising agencies and companies adopt Facebook as a primary channel for social media advertising while also exploring other platforms to maximize reach and effectiveness.
