This study addresses the limited research on the implications of great power competition for small states, with a particular focus on Djibouti’s national security, political autonomy, and economic stability. Despite its strategic location and geopolitical significance, Djibouti remains underexamined in the context of rising global military rivalries. The study investigates how the presence of multiple foreign military bases affects Djibouti’s internal and external security dynamics. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were drawn from official reports, scholarly literature, and strategic analyses, and examined using thematic content analysis to identify key patterns and trade-offs. Findings indicate that while foreign military bases contribute to national security through deterrence and provide economic gains via lease revenues and infrastructure development, these benefits are unequally distributed and come at the cost of growing dependencies that may limit Djibouti’s foreign policy autonomy. The study concludes that Djibouti strategically adopts an omnidirectional hedging approach, maintaining balanced relations with competing powers to preserve its sovereignty and regional relevance. The research contributes to theoretical discourse on small-state strategies in international relations and offers practical policy recommendations for managing foreign military engagements while safeguarding national interests. It also highlights avenues for future research on the broader socio-economic and political implications of foreign base-hosting in strategically located microstates.

Southeast Asia ranks among the most disaster-prone regions globally, owing to its complex geological features and tropical climate. In response, ASEAN established the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER), the region’s first legally binding framework for disaster management. Despite its significance, AADMER's implementation faces structural limitations, including the principle of non-interference, disparities in member state capacities, and bureaucratic delays that hinder rapid mobilization during the critical "golden time" of disaster response. This study examines Indonesia’s defense diplomacy in reinforcing AADMER as a regulatory basis for developing a regional First Responder mechanism that is timely, coordinated, and effective. Adopting a descriptive qualitative methodology, the research analyzes Indonesia’s engagement through platforms such as the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus, alongside the roles of key national institutions including the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and cooperation with the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre). The findings highlight Indonesia’s strategic role as a country frequently affected by disasters in advancing civil-military interoperability, joint disaster response exercises, and rapid deployment mechanisms under AADMER. Indonesia’s defense diplomacy emerges not only as a tool of traditional security but also as a form of soft power that enhances regional solidarity and institutional legitimacy. The study concludes that Indonesia’s leadership is pivotal in realizing the vision of One ASEAN, One Response through the establishment of a regulation-based, consensus-driven, and collectively operational First Responder system for the region.

This study aims to optimize university students’ mastery of 21st-century competencies—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity (4C)—through the implementation of gamification-based interactive digital media in the learning process. Employing classroom action research with the Kemmis and McTaggart spiral model, the study was conducted in two cycles involving 27 students from the Early Childhood Education Study Program. Data were collected through structured observation to objectively monitor the implementation and outcomes of the intervention, and analyzed both descriptively and quantitatively by comparing results across cycles. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ 4C skills, as evidenced by an increase in average scores from 62.38 in cycle 1 to 81.77 in cycle 2, and a rise in completion rates from 26.63% to 88.89%. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of gamification-based interactive digital media in enhancing students’ 4C competencies. The study concludes that this approach not only strengthens essential 21st-century skills but also contributes to pedagogical innovation through technology integration, offering a valuable reference for the development of active learning strategies in higher education.

This study examined the effectiveness of Breakthrough Action’s social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) campaign titled “Check Am O!” on tuberculosis (TB) awareness and behavioural response among residents of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Adopting a survey research design, data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 400 respondents, determined using Yamane’s (1967) formula from a projected population of 2,946,138. A multistage sampling technique was employed to ensure representativeness. The study was anchored on the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) theory, and data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) at a 0.05 alpha level. The findings established a statistically significant relationship between residents’ knowledge of TB, their attitudes, and the adoption of recommended health behaviours as promoted in the “Check Am O!” campaign. Respondents demonstrated high awareness of TB risks (WMS = 4.43), and this knowledge positively influenced their adoption of precautionary measures (WMS = 4.22). The study concluded that the campaign effectively influenced knowledge, attitude, and behavioural change regarding TB prevention. It recommended the inclusion of diverse folk and indigenous media platforms to enhance message penetration, particularly in peri-urban and rural areas, ensuring equitable access to campaign information across all communities in Nasarawa State.

This study investigates the newspaper reading patterns of Mass Communication students at Chukwu Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, with particular emphasis on frequency of readership, gratifications sought, preferred formats, and the influence of social media on newspaper consumption. Employing a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from a sample of 192 students using a structured online questionnaire. The findings reveal that newspaper readership among the students is generally infrequent, with most respondents engaging in occasional reading of traditional print newspapers. Key motivations for newspaper consumption include entertainment, relaxation, and the desire to stay informed. However, a notable shift toward online newspaper formats was observed, driven by factors such as convenience, accessibility, and ease of navigation. The study also establishes that social media platforms significantly influence students' information-seeking behavior, often serving as alternatives to traditional and online newspapers. These trends suggest a growing reliance on digital platforms for news consumption among university students. In light of these findings, the study recommends that newspaper publishers adopt integrated social media strategies to strengthen their digital presence, diversify content to address both entertainment and in-depth news preferences, and that communication curricula be enhanced with media literacy components to foster critical engagement with news content across platforms. The road transportation sector in the Ogbomoso area of Oyo State plays a critical role in facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services, thereby supporting local economic activities. Despite its importance, there remains limited understanding and implementation of transport education, safety compliance, and regulatory frameworks among road transport operators in the region. This study seeks to assess the level of transport education among road users and identify the challenges faced by operators in accessing such education. A survey research design was adopted, utilizing structured questionnaires and interviews to collect data. The study population comprised 310 individuals, including 210 public motor park drivers (based on 2024 park management records), 30 administrative staff and drivers from private transport companies such as Tribel Global Motors (TGM) and MST Executive Transport Service, and 70 officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogbomoso Area Command. A sample of 175 respondents was selected using the Taro Yamane formula. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage counts) and inferential analysis through multiple regression. Findings revealed that while slightly more than half of the respondents had received some form of transport education, significant gaps persist, particularly in formal training and safety regulation awareness. The study concludes that the overall level of transport education among road operators in Ogbomoso remains low, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced educational campaigns and training programs aimed at promoting safety compliance and regulatory adherence. It recommends coordinated efforts among government agencies, transport unions, and private stakeholders to improve access to structured driver education and regulatory awareness.

This study investigates the persistent issue of awaiting trial within the Nigerian correctional system, focusing specifically on inmates in Jos Correctional Service. The research aims to define the nature of the awaiting trial phenomenon, assess investigative failures, identify contributing factors, examine its socio-legal effects, and propose viable solutions. A total of 100 respondents were selected from five operational units in the Jos Correctional Service, comprising 80 awaiting trial inmates, 5 prison officials, 5 representatives of the High Court, and 10 officers from the Nigeria Police Force. Data collection employed structured questionnaires and interviews, with quantitative data analyzed using frequency distribution tables and qualitative data interpreted descriptively. Relevant literature was reviewed from academic journals, legal commentaries, newspapers, and magazines. The findings reveal that the prolonged detention of suspects without trial undermines the constitutional presumption of innocence and contributes to prison congestion, psychological distress, and systemic inefficiencies. Key factors identified include investigative delays, inadequate prosecutorial resources, and bureaucratic inertia within the judicial process. The study recommends the modernization of criminal investigations through the training of police personnel in contemporary techniques, the digitalization of court proceedings to expedite case handling, and the introduction of modern correctional models, such as privately managed facilities—albeit with cautious consideration of legal and ethical implications. The study concludes that awaiting trial is a pressing socio-legal issue that demands urgent reform and further empirical investigation to inform policy and institutional responses within Nigeria’s justice administration framework.

The pursuit of happiness has become a central theme in both academic inquiry and social policy, yet the lived experiences of single women—particularly within Confucian-influenced societies—remain understudied. This study explores how single women in Vietnam define and experience happiness in the context of rapid modernization, industrialization, and globalization, all of which have significantly reshaped family structures and gender dynamics. Based on qualitative data from 15 in-depth interviews conducted between April and August 2025, the study employs thematic analysis to examine how autonomy, economic independence, emotional well-being, and cultural expectations intersect in shaping perceptions of happiness. The findings reveal that happiness for single women is a fluid, context-dependent construct, integrating traditional norms of familial responsibility with contemporary aspirations for individuality and self-fulfillment. Despite structural inequalities and enduring social stigma, participants exhibited emotional resilience, financial agency, and a growing sense of empowerment. This study contributes to feminist sociology by situating women’s well-being within Vietnam’s broader socio-cultural transformation. It also offers practical implications for policies aimed at advancing gender equality, promoting social inclusion, and enhancing subjective well-being within the framework of sustainable development.

This paper examines the scramble and partition of West African territories by European superpowers during the final two decades of the 19th century—a period that marked a turning point in the political and historical trajectory of the region. Drawing on secondary sources, the study analyzes the geopolitical rivalries and diplomatic tensions among major European powers, particularly Britain and France, in their quest to assert territorial control. It highlights key episodes, such as the Anglo-French conflict over South Africa, the disputes surrounding Egypt and the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana), and the broader imperial competition that fueled colonial expansion. The paper explores the underlying causes of the scramble, including economic interests, strategic rivalries, and national prestige, as well as the outcomes and consequences of the partition. Particular attention is given to the Berlin Conference of 1884–1885, which formalized European claims and codified rules for territorial acquisition, and to African resistance movements that challenged colonial imposition. The study concludes that the scramble and partition had profound and lasting effects on the political boundaries, governance structures, and socio-economic development of West African states. It recommends the promotion of civic education, political reforms, and pan-African engagement as pathways to restoring and safeguarding the continent’s autonomy and development, with specific reference to the Nigerian context.

This study analyzes the policy learning processes underlying poverty alleviation policy changes in Jeneponto Regency, South Sulawesi Province. With a poverty rate of 13.06%—representing approximately 49,700 individuals in 2023—Jeneponto requires a policy framework that moves beyond charitable interventions toward strategies grounded in empowerment and institutional learning. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis, and were processed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that poverty alleviation policy changes in Jeneponto are not limited to technical or administrative adjustments but emerge from an iterative policy learning process. This approach has contributed to a modest reduction in the poverty rate from 13.26% in 2022 to 13.06% in 2023. While the decrease is incremental, it signifies a shift toward more reflective, responsive, and adaptive policymaking tailored to community needs. The study concludes that policy learning—through institutional reflexivity and stakeholder engagement—is central to enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of regional poverty alleviation efforts. The Jeneponto government’s evolving capacity for institutional and social adaptation underscores the importance of continuous learning in advancing public policy governance.
