Abstract

The classical mufasirs’ interpretation of QS. an-Nisā’ [4]: 34 often leads to gender bias. An understanding that tends to be literal-scripturalistic-normative implies a view that the superiority of men over women is considered an Islamic decree. This article aims to examine the extent to which the verse is understood based on the views of two figures, namely Sahiron Syamsuddin and Asghar Ali Engineer. Based on library research, and through a textual analysis approach to the interpretation of the two figures above, this research shows that QS. an-Nisā’ [4]: 34 is not simply seen as a normative verse as understood by classical mufasirs and some modern mufasirs, but also as a verse that describes the real conditions of the Arab family system at the time of the Prophet which is being morally organised by the Qur’an. So, in addition to being normative, the verse must also be understood as a historical-cultural verse. Thus, the authority of family leadership is no longer understood as a private space belonging to men alone, but is determined by the prevailing system culture. In a matriarchal family system, a wife can be a leader, as well as in a collective system, as long as the leadership provides justice and benefits for the family.

Abstract

In this world, living beings, particularly humans, are constantly driven to move and travel, aiming to achieve better outcomes both in this life and the hereafter. This movement can be seen as an effort to meet various human needs, as explained by Abraham Maslow in his hierarchy of needs, which ranges from basic physiological needs to higher levels of self-actualization. People embark on journeys to secure sustenance, fulfill religious duties such as studying, performing Hajj and Umrah, visiting friends to strengthen bonds, assisting those in need, and visiting the sick. These activities not only satisfy physiological and safety needs but also foster social connections, esteem, and ultimately lead to self-actualization. The encouragement from Allah and His Messenger to travel the earth to witness the majesty of Allah's creation aligns with the pursuit of self-actualization as described by Maslow. This study seeks to explore the meanings of Riḥlah and Safar as interpreted in Tafsir Al-Azhar. The research utilizes the tafsir maudhu'i method, with Buya Hamka's Tafsir al-Azhar serving as the primary source, alongside other scholarly works. The methodology involves defining the theme, gathering relevant verses, and analyzing them with a focus on the selected source. The findings indicate that Riḥlah in the Qur'an, as interpreted by Buya Hamka, refers to traveling for trade or business, a common practice among Arabs, including the Prophet. Meanwhile, Safar is understood as a journey, often linked with the relief (rukhshoh) granted to travelers, illustrating how these travels fulfill various human needs as outlined by Maslow.

Abstract

This study examines the motivation for charitable giving (sadaqah) in asbi ash-Shiddieqy's Al-Qur’anul Majid through the lens of Bourdieu's theory. The significance of this research lies in integrating social theory with Qur'anic interpretation to explore how capital, habitus, and practice influence charitable actions. The methodology involves a qualitative analysis of ash-Shiddieqy's tafsir using Bourdieu's theory, while identifying gaps in previous studies related to the roles of symbolic and cultural capital and gender equality in charitable giving. The novelty of this research is its application of Bourdieu’s theory to investigate how metaphors in the tafsir and gender equality impact motivation and practice in charitable giving. The findings indicate that the metaphors in Al-Qur’anul Majid simplify the concept of sadaqah, making it easier to understand and implement, thereby increasing motivation. Gender equality in charitable giving, as outlined in ash-Shiddieqy's tafsir, promotes active participation from all genders and reinforces egalitarian values in charitable practices. Furthermore, mutual reminders within the community, according to the tafsir, play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and consistency of charitable actions, strengthening social capital, and shaping a habitus that supports sustainable giving. This study contributes significant insights by linking Qur'anic exegesis with contemporary social theory, offering new perspectives on how social and symbolic factors influence charitable practices within religious and social contexts.

Abstract

Every Muslim has various forms of interaction with the Qur'an. For example, the people of Sekernan Village make the recitation of khataman al-Qur'an part of the traditional wedding procession. In practice, this tradition has a unique procession that acculturates with local culture. Therefore, the community makes this tradition a religious ritual in the form of meaningful symbols that are believed to have a positive influence on the sustainability of building a household. So, this research aims to look at the procession and the meaning behind the practice. Using Clifford Geertz's theory, it is used as an analysis to find the meaning behind the symbols in the traditional tradition of khatam al-Qur'an. The results of this study show that there are several series of customs that must be carried out by the bride before reading the Qur'an. Among them are the procession of processions, weighing, then reading the khatam al-Qur'an starting from surah al-Duha to surah an-Nas accompanied by the Koran teacher and his parents. In addition, this tradition also has symbols that relate to the concept of religion, namely in the form of religious education, birrul walidain, and privileges that are believed to have ultimate meaning, so that it continues to be maintained to this day.

Abstract

This study examines Quraish Shihab’s interpretation of the concept of rizq in Tafsir al-Misbah through the lens of Jean Piaget’s cognitive development theory and Lev Vygotsky’s socio-cognitive theory. The academic problem addressed is how the concept of rizq, involving effort, prayer, and social interaction, can be understood from the perspective of cognitive development and social ethics. The study aims to fill the gap in tafsir analysis by incorporating psychological approaches, particularly in understanding how theological thoughts on rizq influence cognitive development and the formation of individual ethics. The research method used is textual analysis of Tafsir al-Misbah with theoretical approaches from Piaget and Vygotsky, exploring both cognitive and ethical aspects in the process of acquiring rizq. The novelty of this research lies in applying psychological developmental theories to tafsir analysis, a rarely undertaken approach in Quranic exegesis studies. The results indicate that Quraish Shihab's interpretation of rizq encompasses cognitive aspects that encourage logical and abstract thinking about effort and prayer, as well as ethical aspects that emphasize social responsibility and integrity in the pursuit of sustenance. This tafsir promotes the development of a proactive mindset and a strong ethical awareness through social interaction within the community.

Abstract

Leadership is a fundamental aspect of human civilization and a central theme in Islamic teachings. The Qur'an addresses various dimensions of leadership through terms such as khalīfah, imāmah, and ulū al-amr. This study aims to explore the concept of leadership in Islam by analyzing Qur’anic verse QS. al-Baqarah [2]:30 through the lens of tafsīr maqāṣidī as developed by Abdul Mustaqim, using Tafsīr al-Munīr by Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī as the primary interpretive source. Employing a qualitative library research method, this paper focuses on the linguistic, semantic, and thematic analysis of the verse to uncover ethical and spiritual values embedded in the Qur’anic discourse on leadership. The findings reveal that QS. al-Baqarah [2]:30 offers a comprehensive framework for Islamic leadership rooted in divine trust (amānah) and oriented toward achieving public benefit (maṣlaḥah). Through a maqāṣidī approach, the verse reflects key principles such as environmental stewardship (ḥifẓ al-bī’ah), protection of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), and intellectual empowerment (ḥifẓ al-‘aql). These dimensions highlight the leader’s responsibility to preserve ecological balance, ensure human dignity, and promote education and critical thinking. The study concludes that Qur’anic leadership transcends political authority, emphasizing moral integrity, accountability, and alignment with the higher objectives of Islamic law. By contextualizing Qur’anic principles within contemporary challenges, this paper contributes to the development of a relevant, ethical, and sustainable model of Islamic leadership.

Abstract

Fazlur Rahman’s hermeneutics, particularly his double movement theory, offers a novel approach to understanding Islamic texts, including Qur’anic verses on riba (usury). This approach emphasizes two key stages: first, examining the socio-historical context of the verses at the time of revelation, and second, applying the universal values of these verses in a contemporary setting. Through this method, Rahman seeks to bridge the gap between normative texts (das Sollen) and modern socio-economic realities (das Sein), ensuring that Islamic law remains relevant to changing times. However, his approach has not been without criticism, particularly from traditional scholars who argue that Rahman’s reinterpretation of riba contradicts classical Islamic jurisprudence, which categorically prohibits bank interest. This study evaluates Rahman’s hermeneutics in interpreting riba verses by integrating a historical-critical analysis with contemporary exegetical studies. The findings indicate that while Rahman’s approach provides an alternative perspective on Islamic legal interpretation, careful application of hermeneutical methods is necessary to maintain the fundamental principles of Islamic law

Abstract

The learning of Al-Qur’an and Hadith plays a crucial role in shaping the morality and character of students in Islamic elementary education. However, at MI Mathla’ul Anwar Gunung Sugih, Lampung, a gap exists between the ideal goals and the practical implementation of learning, such as students' lack of focus during recitation, their tendency to avoid performing Dhuha prayers, and the minimal internalization of moral values in daily life. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of Al-Qur’an and Hadith learning in shaping students' morality and to identify more integrative and applicable teaching strategies. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, data were collected through observation, interviews, and literature review, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The findings indicate that experience-based learning strategies, such as the habituation of congregational prayers, reflective discussions on Qur’anic verses and Hadith, and the active involvement of teachers in moral guidance, are more effective in internalizing Islamic values. Furthermore, the support of family and social environments also plays a crucial role in shaping children's character more comprehensively. Therefore, Al-Qur’an and Hadith learning functions not only as a transfer of religious knowledge but also as a means of moral transformation, forming students into religious, ethical individuals with high social awareness. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of more effective religious education strategies in building students' character from an early age.

Abstract

The phenomenon of hoax dissemination in the digital era has become a serious challenge with far-reaching impacts on social stability, political dynamics, and religious life among Muslim communities. The Qur’an, as the holy scripture of Islam, offers fundamental principles for responding to information, particularly through verses that emphasize verification and caution, such as Q.S. al-Ḥujurāt [49]:6 and Q.S. al-Nūr [24]:15. This study aims to analyze the content of these two verses using the maqāṣidī tafsir approach as developed by Abdul Mustaqim, in order to uncover the substantial and contextual values of Islamic law. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach based on literature review from primary and secondary authoritative tafsir sources. The findings reveal that these verses encompass core values of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, including: ḥifẓ al-nafs (protection of life), ḥifẓ al-‘aql (protection of intellect), ḥifẓ al-dīn (protection of religion), ḥifẓ al-dawlah (protection of the state), and ḥurriyyah al-mas’ūliyyah (responsible freedom). These values are not only normative but also practical in addressing the challenges of modern disinformation. Thus, the maqāṣidī approach presents a relevant and solution-oriented methodology for shaping ethical media engagement and fostering responsible Islamic digital literacy in contemporary society.

Abstract

Islam in Japan has developed as a minority religion through various channels, including migration, missionary efforts (da’wah), and academic engagement. One of the key aspects of this development is the translation of the Qur’an into Japanese. Two main categories of translators have played a significant role: Muslim insiders and non-Muslim outsiders. Outsider translators, such as Kenichi Sakamoto and Toshihiko Izutsu, adopted academic, linguistic, and political approaches in rendering the Qur’an, making their works widely appreciated in scholarly circles for their perceived objectivity and analytical rigor. In contrast, insider translators like Ryoichi Mita and Ko Nakata viewed translation as part of religious experience and da’wah, which led to greater acceptance within the local Muslim community. These differing approaches have shaped public reception: outsider translations are more commonly used in academic discourse, while insider versions are prevalent in religious practice. This study aims to analyze the methodological and ideological differences between these two groups in translating the Qur’an in Japan, and how each approach influences perceptions of Islam in Japanese society. Employing a qualitative literature-based method, the research examines various Qur’anic translations and community responses to them. The findings reveal that outsider translations contribute significantly to the intellectual understanding of Islam, while insider translations play a vital role in preserving the religious identity of Japan’s Muslim minority. Despite their differing orientations, both perspectives are crucial in shaping the image and understanding of Islam within contemporary Japanese society.
