Abstract

Fortification of essential amino acids in self-formulated feed is a strategic approach to improve nutrient efficiency and reduce production costs in barramundi (Lates calcarifer) aquaculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary lysine supplementation at 0.5% in self-formulated feed on growth performance and feed utilization efficiency. The experiment was conducted from March to June 2023 using a completely randomized design with two treatments: commercial feed as control and self-formulated feed supplemented with lysine, each with three replicates. Fish were reared under controlled conditions and fed to satiation. Observed parameters included weight gain, length increment, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency (FE), and water quality. The results demonstrated that lysine supplementation significantly improved growth performance and feed utilization. Fish fed lysine-supplemented feed showed higher weight gain (13.87±0.37 g) compared to the control (11.99±0.31 g), as well as lower FCR (1.76±0.10) than commercial feed (2.70±0.10). Feed efficiency was also significantly higher in the lysine treatment (56.8±3.17%) compared to the control (37.1±1.31%). However, no significant difference was observed in SGR between treatments. In conclusion, lysine fortification in self-formulated feed enhances growth performance and feed efficiency of barramundi, indicating its potential as a cost-effective and sustainable feeding strategy in aquaculture practices.

Abstract

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, is a major bacterial disease that significantly impacts Litopenaeus vannamei aquaculture. The use of natural antibacterial agents has gained increasing attention as an alternative to antibiotics. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of coconut shell liquid smoke against V. parahaemolyticus using an in vitro disc diffusion method. A completely randomized design was applied with five concentrations of liquid smoke (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5%), along with positive (chloramphenicol) and negative (distilled water) controls, each with three replications. Antibacterial activity was assessed by measuring the diameter of inhibition zones after 24 hours of incubation. The results showed that coconut shell liquid smoke exhibited significant antibacterial activity against V. parahaemolyticus. The highest inhibition zone was observed at 1.0% concentration (18.03 mm), followed by 0.5% (13.63 mm), both categorized as strong inhibition. However, the antibacterial effect did not increase proportionally with concentration, indicating a non-linear response. The positive control showed a very strong inhibition zone (26.5 mm), while no inhibition was observed in the negative control. In conclusion, coconut shell liquid smoke demonstrates strong potential as a natural antibacterial agent against V. parahaemolyticus. Further in vivo studies are recommended to evaluate its effectiveness in shrimp culture systems for sustainable AHPND management.

Abstract

The high cost of synthetic hormones and the difficulty of standardizing pituitary methods are obstacles in the cultivation of Mandalika catfish. Young coconut water (Cocos nucifera) contains phytohormones, amino acids, and minerals that have the potential to act as natural stimulants to stimulate the endocrine system and improve fish reproductive performance. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using various stimulants on fecundity, hatching rate, and hatching time of catfish eggs, as well as to monitor the stability of water quality during the incubation process. This experimental study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments: commercial hormones (P1), young coconut water (P2), and pituitary gland (P3). The doses used were 0.5 ml/kg for female broodstock and 0.3 ml/kg for male broodstock intramuscularly. The results showed that young coconut water (P2) gave the best results with an average fecundity of 20,125 eggs, significantly higher than P3 (10,250 eggs) and P1 (10,000 eggs). The highest hatching rate was also achieved by treatment P2 at 83.00%, followed by P3 (71.75%) and P1 (71.00%). Egg hatching time ranged from 31 to 34.25 hours, with P1 recording the fastest time but the lowest hatching rate. Water quality parameters were optimally maintained throughout the study at a temperature of 26–27°C, pH 6.5, and DO 3 mg/L. Young coconut water has proven to be the most effective natural stimulant in increasing the quantity and quality of Mandalika catfish reproduction, while also offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for farmers.

Abstract

Red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a freshwater commodity that is widely cultivated and has become one of the most popular fish for consumption among communities. Red tilapia is extensively farmed because it has several advantages, such as rapid growth, tolerance to both low and high temperatures, and euryhaline characteristics. In addition to these advantages, red tilapia farming also has weaknesses, one of which is parasitic infection. One of the causes of decreased productivity is parasite infection. Parasites are microorganisms that can infect many fish species; therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting this study to increase knowledge about the types of endoparasites, which is very important to facilitate handling when fish are infected by endoparasites. This research will be conducted for one month, and fish samples will be collected from different aquaculture systems. Parasite observations will be carried out at the Laboratory of the Fish Quarantine Station for Quality Control and Safety of Fishery Products (SKIPM) Class I Gorontalo. This study uses a descriptive method with a comparative approach. This research method is intended to describe every existing phenomenon, which may include forms, activities, characteristics, changes, relationships, similarities, and differences among phenomena (Rosita et al., 2023). When this method is combined with a comparative approach, the focus is on comparing two or more groups. Endoparasite examination will be conducted using the native method. The target organs examined include the digestive tract organs, namely the stomach and intestine

Abstract

This research was conducted at PT. Perikanan Indonesia Brondong Branch, Lamongan Regency, which is a state-owned enterprise in the fisheries sector and part of ID FOOD. The purpose of this activity is to understand the implementation of marketing management, particularly on frozen squid (Sepia officinalis) products. The research uses a descriptive method through observation, interviews, and direct participation in the field. The results show that the marketing strategy is carried out in a structured manner, including pricing, market segmentation, promotion, and product distribution. The squid (Sepia officinalis) product is processed in whole round form using blast freezing technology to maintain quality and meet export standards such as HACCP. Sales are conducted directly and through export partners, while distribution uses cold storage and refrigerated fleets to domestic and international markets. Challenges faced include limited storage capacity, exchange rate fluctuations, suboptimal branding, and logistics issues in product delivery. In addition, digital marketing has not been utilized to its full potential. This field work provides real understanding of the application of marketing management in the fisheries industry and the challenges faced in marketing products to the global market. The results are expected to provide input for companies in improving product efficiency and competitiveness, as well as for students as practical experience to face the workforce.

Abstract

The Aquaculture Village (KPB) in Mataram City is one of the government's efforts to improve community welfare, create food security and become a strategy to spur competitive tilapia productivity. Currently, the development of Aquaculture Villages faces challenges due to high land conversion, increase in fish feed prices, declining water quality, lack of technology adoption and weak marketing systems. This study aims to analyze the feasibility of tilapia farming business in aquaculture village areas based on technical, market, management, and financial aspects. The research uses qualitative descriptive methods and financial feasibility analysis calculations. The results of the study show that the development of tilapia farming business is still constrained in technical, management and marketing aspects. In the financial aspect, the tilapia cultivation business is feasible to run both in the short and long term. The results of the short-term financial analysis showed an R/C value of 1.28, profit of IDR 285,063,750/cycle and a profitability of 28.44%. The long-term analysis shows a positive NPV value of IDR 2.46 billion, Net B/C of 6.3, and IRR of 49%, with PP for 11 months.

Abstract

Cannibalism is a major constraint in juvenile barramundi (Lates calcarifer) hatchery production, particularly during the nursery phase when size heterogeneity, feeding competition, and predator–prey encounters increase. This article synthesizes published evidence and field-based hatchery perspectives to explain the morphological, behavioural, and energetic mechanisms underlying cannibalism and their implications for hatchery management. The synthesis focused on four domains: morphological limitation, prey-size vulnerability, energetic profitability, and nursery management factors, including grading, stocking density, and feeding frequency. The findings indicate that cannibalism is initiated mainly by size heterogeneity, where smaller juveniles become vulnerable when their body size allows capture and ingestion by larger conspecifics. Morphological constraints determine the physical feasibility of ingestion, whereas capture success, escape response, and handling time influence prey vulnerability. Energetic evidence further explains cannibalism persistence because cannibalistic individuals may gain growth advantages that intensify cohort size disparity. Therefore, cannibalism control should integrate early size monitoring, preventive grading, shooter removal, density regulation, and increased feeding frequency. This synthesis provides a practical framework for improving juvenile survival and nursery efficiency in tropical barramundi hatcheries.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the tourism suitability index and carrying capacity of the Pangandaran East Coast area, West Java, as a tourist destination based on beach recreation and marine activities. This research was conducted in April 2025. The research method involved primary data collection through field surveys of environmental parameters such as beach conditions, water quality, and supporting facilities, as well as secondary data from relevant agencies. The analysis was conducted using a quantitative descriptive approach with the tourism suitability index formula and the carrying capacity of the area. The results showed that Pangandaran East Beach has a tourism suitability index for beach tourism, camping and swimming activities in a row of 97.3%; 91.7%; 85.9% which is classified in the “very suitable” category. The carrying capacity of the area for beach recreation activities was calculated at 253 people/day, then for swimming activities at 189 people/day and camping at 710 people/day which reflects the maximum capacity of visitors that can be received without disturbing the beach ecosystem or reducing the quality of the tourist experience. This approach provides important recommendations for tourism managers to optimize the management of visitor numbers and improve supporting facilities to maintain the sustainability of the area. With calm beach characteristics and good accessibility, Pangandaran East Beach has great potential as a leading destination in West Java for marine recreation. This research is expected to be a reference for the development of sustainable tourism policies in coastal areas.

Abstract

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultivated in Lake Ranau, West Lampung, possesses several superior characteristics, including good growth performance, thick flesh, savory taste, and the absence of muddy odor. These advantages are presumed to be associated with the presence of gut microbiota, particularly lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which have potential as probiotics. This study aimed to obtain lactic acid bacteria isolates from the gastrointestinal tract of tilapia, evaluate their enzymatic activities, and determine potential probiotic candidates. The research employed an exploratory method through bacterial isolation, LAB screening using de Man Rogosa Sharpe Agar (MRSA), enzymatic activity assays, morphological and biochemical identification, and molecular analysis based on 16S rDNA sequencing. The results showed that 12 bacterial isolates were successfully grown on MRSA medium. Ten isolates exhibited amylase activity, while all isolates demonstrated lipase and protease activities, indicated by the formation of clear zones around the bacterial colonies. Isolate UNR.11 showed the highest enzymatic activities with clear zone diameters of 25.5 ± 2.80 mm for amylase, 20.4 ± 1.2 mm for lipase, and 22.7 ± 4.06 mm for protease activity. Based on macroscopic, microscopic, biochemical, and 16S rDNA sequence analyses, isolate UNR.11 was identified as Bacillus cereus with 99% similarity. This isolate has potential as a probiotic candidate due to its ability to produce digestive enzymes, namely amylase, lipase, and protease, which may support digestion and nutrient utilization in fish.
