Abstract

Arafura waters are one of the main squid (Loligo sp.) fishing areas in Indonesia with an important contribution to national capture fisheries production. This study aims to describe the squid handline operation technique and analyze the types and quantities of catches on KM. Bandar Nelayan 118 based in Benoa Harbor, Bali. The study was conducted in October–November 2023 through direct observation on board, interviews with the captain and crew, and documentation of fishing activities. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results showed that squid handline operations were carried out at night with the help of 2000 watt metal halide lamps, using four main techniques, namely bottom fishing (ahe-ahe), mid-line fishing (kokokan), surface fishing (lempang), and sate fishing. Fishing gear is selective and only catches Loligo sp. squid without bycatch. The total catch during the study reached approximately 9,902 kg, with daily fluctuations influenced by currents, baiting techniques, bait color, and the location of the catch. This study demonstrates that squid handline fishing on the KM. Bandar Nelayan 118 is effective, selective, and has the potential to support sustainable capture fisheries in the Arafura Waters.

Abstract

This study aims to identify internal and external factors, map the strategic position, and formulate and prioritize development strategies for the dried fish processing business in Bengkulu City. The method used is descriptive quantitative analysis with IFE and EFE matrix approaches, SWOT analysis, and Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). Respondents totaled 16 people selected through purposive sampling, including business actors, fisheries agencies, cooperative and MSME offices, and consumers. The results show that the dominant internal factor is the business actor's experience (score 5.67) and raw material quality (score 5.50), while the main weakness is limited access to capital (score 3.00). Total IFE score of 4.72 and EFE of 3.79 placed the business in Quadrant I of the SWOT diagram (coordinates 2.76; 1.09), indicating an aggressive position. Based on QSPM analysis, the top priority strategy is developing product variety based on local experience (TAS = 5.79), followed by utilizing government assistance for production equipment modernization (TAS = 5.54), increasing production volume and market expansion (TAS = 5.25), government partnership (TAS = 5.22), and improving product quality for market penetration (TAS = 5.04).

Abstract

The availability of optimal feed is a fundamental factor in supporting the successful cultivation of barramundi (Lates calcarifer) fingerlings. A combination of artificial feed, natural feed, and supplementary feed can fulfill the nutritional needs of fish; however, the high cost of artificial feed often hinders production efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different types of supplementary feed on the growth and survival rate of barramundi fingerlings. The research was conducted from May to July 2024 in floating net cages (FNC) in the waters of Tapian Nauli I Village, Tapian Nauli Sub-district, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments: mixed trash fish (P1), squid (P2), marine worms (P3), and krill (P4), each with three replicates. Parameters measured included absolute weight growth, absolute length growth, survival rate, and water quality in the cultivation containers. The results showed that treatment P1 (mixed trash fish) produced the best growth performance, with an average absolute weight of 2.42 g, an average absolute length of 5.76 cm, and optimal survival rates. In conclusion, mixed trash fish can serve as an effective supplementary feed alternative to enhance the growth performance of barramundi fingerlings while supporting feed cost efficiency in aquaculture systems.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with exceptionally high biodiversity and endemism. However, this condition also increases the risk of overfishing, which can lead to population declines and even species scarcity. In practice, fishing activities often capture non-target organisms (bycatch), including marine species with important conservation status listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and the appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Therefore, conservation efforts for sharks and rays are crucial due to high fishing pressure, including bycatch, as well as their low reproductive rates, which make them particularly vulnerable to extinction. The use of non-selective fishing gear further increases the likelihood of accidental capture, highlighting the need for sustainable fisheries management, fisher education, and bycatch reduction measures. This study focuses on protected aquatic biota to obtain data on sharks and rays landed at the Brondong Nusantara Fishing Port. Data were collected through direct observation of protected species landed at the port. The results show that several species are listed under CITES Appendix II, including Rhynchobatus springeri, Sphyrna zygaena, Carcharhinus dussumieri, Carcharhinus melanopterus, Carcharhinus limbatus, and Rhina ancylostoma. Additionally, several species are included in the IUCN Red List, such as Telatrygon zugei, Ginglymostoma cirratum, Galeocerdo cuvier, Dasyatis zugei, Chiloscyllium punctatum, Himantura uarnak, Mustelus manazo, Aetobatus ocellatus, and Chiloscyllium plagiosum. This identification and documentation are essential for determining conservation status and supporting policies aimed at balancing utilization and conservation of shark and ray resources in Indonesia.

Abstract

Whiteleg shrimp farming is a significant and leading aquaculture industry in Indonesia. One of the main challenges faced by shrimp farmers is the high cost of feed. Appropriate feeding frequency is crucial to improve feed efficiency, supporting growth, FCR, and survival rates of whiteleg shrimp. This article aims to determine the Effect of Different Feeding Frequencies on the Absolute Growth of Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) at the PL 6 stage (30 days old) and their health status, as well as to identify the optimal feeding frequency for achieving peak absolute weight gain and shrimp health. The methodology employed in this study is experimental, with data collected through direct observational methods. The experimental design used is a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and 6 replications of varying feeding frequencies: Treatment (A): 3 times per day. Treatment (B): 4 times per day. Treatment (C): 5 times per day. Treatment (D): 6 times per day. The results of this study indicate that the frequency of feeding results in a difference in the growth of vaname shrimp body weight with treatment B with the highest value which will result in profits in vaname shrimp cultivation production.

Abstract

Benoa Port is the main port in Bali Province and is one of the tuna landing bases in Indonesia with tuna longline fishing gear. The study aims to determine the construction and operating techniques of tuna longline. The results showed that the construction of tuna longline on KM. Perintis Jaya 66 consists of a main line made of monofilament with a length of 30 m, a branch line with a length of 15 meters, a radio buoy line (radio buoy line) with a length of 15 meters made of polyethylene, a buoy line (buoy line) with a length of 10 meters made of polyethylene, a float (float) made of plastic with a total of 84 pieces, fishing gear equipped with a radio buoy that functions to determine the location of the tuna longline when hauling and a fishing hook of the circle hook / J4 type made of stainless steel. The process of lowering the tuna longline fishing gear (setting) starts from 07.00-13.00 and takes 6 hours. The fishing gear is immersed for approximately 10 hours, calculated from the time of the first radio buoy launch. Hauling takes place between 5:00 PM and 6:00 AM ship's time. The vessel operates at a speed of 1-2 knots, following the main line on the starboard side at a 45° angle to the ship's bow.
