Abstract

The management of household organic and plastic waste can be transformed into a productive activity if the community gains practical knowledge, simple technology, and hands-on experience. This community service initiative was carried out under the 2026 Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) Village Empowerment Program, focusing on an integrated approach: producing solid compost from organic waste, repurposing used plastic water jugs as plant pots, and using the compost to cultivate cassava, which serves as an alternative feed for catfish. The activities employed a participatory method involving presentations, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and evaluation. Data from 21 pre-test and post-test respondents showed an increase in the average score from 72.63 to 91.33; 80.95% of respondents improved their scores, while 19.05% maintained theirs. A two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirmed a significant difference in scores within the paired group (p = 0.0156). The results demonstrate that integrating organic waste processing, plastic waste repurposing, and crop cultivation can serve as an effective learning package for community empowerment. Continued guidance remains necessary to assess the sustainability of these practices and their long-term environmental and economic impacts. Keywords: compost; community empowerment; circular economy; plastic waste; waste management

Abstract

Island communities face food-security constraints caused by dependence on sea transportation, limited residential land, fluctuating vegetable supply, and the need for efficient freshwater use. This community-service program is designed to empower the Fatayat NU group in Karimunjawa Village through an intelligent vertical garden integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence. The program combines organizational strengthening, cultivation and nutrition training, installation of two vertical-garden units, digital monitoring, mentoring, and evaluation. The proposed system monitors pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, and humidity and controls water and nutrient delivery to support more precise cultivation. Vertical cultivation is relevant to dense coastal settlements because production space can be expanded upward without requiring extensive flat land. It is also expected to reduce water use by approximately 30–35%, improve crop stability, and support local access to leafy vegetables during periods of disrupted sea transportation. Nutritionally, locally produced vegetables may improve access to fiber, vitamins, and minerals for households whose diets are strongly influenced by marine products. As the source document is a proposal, the satisfaction percentages presented in this manuscript are illustrative conversions rather than measured outcomes and must be replaced with actual survey data before publication. The program is expected to strengthen technological literacy, local food resilience, and community-based nutrition awareness in Karimunjawa.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus continous prevention efforts to reduce the risk of complication, including through strengthening the capacity of community health cadres to provide health education. This community engangement program aimed to improve the knowlegde and skills of health cadres throught the implementation of digital educational media for diabetes mellitus complication prevention. The program was conducted in Pesawahan Village, Binangun Distric, Cilacap Regency, Central Java, involving 35 female health cadres during June – July 2026 through three activities. The intervention consisted of health education, practical trainning on movement and functional education, and implementation of digital education media comprising a digital flipbook, QR code integrated into leaflets, and material distribution through WhatsaApp. Knowledge and skill were assessed before and after the intervention using structured instruments, while implementation of digital media was evaluated descriptively. Based on analysis, the mean knowledge score increased from 56.57 to 81.29, while the mean skill score increased from 9.34 to 17.17. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank analysis indicated significant changes in both knowledge and skills (p<0,001), with large effect sizes. All 35 cadres (100%) accessed the QR Code and digital flipbook, recieved materials through WhatsApp and disseminated the flipbook to community members in their residential areas. The program demonstrated the potential of integrated digital educational media to strenghten cadres capacity and extend diabetes mellitus complication prevention education at the community level

Abstract

This community empowerment program aimed to enhance the business capacity of agribusiness micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) specializing in aquatic plants in Cihideung Village, Parongpong District, West Bandung Regency, by strengthening financial management practices and developing strategies for future business growth. The program was initiated in response to several challenges, including stagnant sales between 2024 and 2025 due to limited marketing efforts that relied primarily on social media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Additional constraints included limited cultivation equipment, inadequate financial management resulting from the absence of bookkeeping, and issues related to product durability during cultivation until the products were ready for sale. The program employed lectures, discussions, and demonstrations as its implementation methods. The results indicated that improving product marketing increased sales by more than 10 plants per week. Furthermore, the provision of cultivation equipment and supporting facilities more than doubled cultivation capacity. Improved financial record-keeping enabled clearer and higher business income and profitability, while better optimization of product durability reduced losses from unsuccessful cultivation. In conclusion, the provision of equipment and non-equipment support, including training in financial management and business development for agribusiness MSMEs specializing in aquatic plants, resulted in significant improvements in business capacity.
