Abstract

This paper explores how parenting patterns in shaping children's character in the digital era with the perspective of the Qur'an. This is interesting because there is not much literature that discusses this theme in the view of the Qur'an. In today's digital era, almost everyone depends on gadgets, and children are no exception. This era is an era where there is a market for positive and negative things on social media. The spread of hoaxes, hate speech, and radicalism, for example, can be known through social media. This is a challenge that has the potential to affect the character of children who will become the nation's next generation, who should be given proper care so that good character is formed from an early age. Character building from an early age depends much on parenting patterns, because they are the first educators. In addition, the material given to children is also a determining factor in shaping children's character. Talking about parenting patterns in shaping children's character, it turns out that the Al-Qur'an has provided an overview in several letters, which tell how the ideal parenting patterns are carried out by parents towards their children.

Abstract

The debate on whether Islam as a religion should merge with state is intriguing and seems to never end. One of the prominent Muslim thinkers who was concerned with this issue is Sayyid Qutb (1906-1966), the author of Fī Ẓīlāl alQur'ān, a tafsir work which dominantly colors several Islamic movements such as the Ikhwanul Muslimin. This article describes Qutb’s thought on the state and its legal sources elaborated in the mentioned book. It also traces the historical roots of his thought.Keywords: Sayyid Quṭb, Islamic State, Ikhwanul Muslimin, tafsir Fī Ẓīlāl al-Qur'ān.

Abstract

This paper studies on RashÄ«d Riḍā’s view on isrāiliyyāt and the Bible in his tafsir al-Manār. As a reformer in the field of exegesis, Riḍā found urgent necessity in returning al-Qur’an to its original purpose which is to give guidance. The problem is that Riḍā saw many authors of exegesis work (mufassir) before him give profuse and unnecessary exegetical discussion. To Riḍā, displaying this kind of lavish information diverts from the original vision of al-Qur’an and cannot be tolerated. In this case, Riḍā resolutely opposes the quotation of isrāiliyyāt. Interestingly, behind this stance, Riḍā quotes the Bible in his work. This becomes the main focus of this study; how Riḍā views isrāiliyyāt and the Bible, what is the essential difference between the two according to Riḍā, and what is the reason behind his quotation of the bible and his opposition against isrāiliyyāt?. To analyze this topic, descriptive-analytical method is used. The result is, it is found that according to Riḍā, isrāiliyyāt are just unfounded stories and not worth quoting. While the Bible in Riḍā’s view is a holy book containing the New and Old Testament the truth of which is believed by the People of the Book themselves. In this case, Riḍā believes that the source worth quoting is only one which is á¹£aḥīḥ and marfū’ from the Prophet. Whenever it has to be from the People of the Book, one should quote from the Bible even though Riḍā himself realizes that there are many oddities in it.

Abstract

Love is a part of human emotion in form of complete tendency toward an object. As a life guidance, the holy book of Al-Qur‟an brings to life not only the physical dimension but also the psychological dimension of humankind. Al-Qur‟an has defined one single object as the fundamental base of life namely love to the Creator of life Himself, Allah AWT. Love to God is the primary foundation which has to be built on every Muslim‟s soul. With love, worshipping feels enjoyable and with it life is both physically and mentally healthy. The problem is, why is this ideal concept not yet realized optimally in life? This writing aims at formulizing Dzu al-Nun al-Misri‟s proposition on the concept of love to Allah. Through the interpretation of verses on love, this normative concept can hopefully become a guide towards a life full of love, without violence and disunity. Abstract

Kajian tentang manuskrip menarik untuk dilakukan karena bisa mengungkap sisi nilai budaya maupun sejarah. Artikel ini mengkaji  manuskrip mushaf al-Qur`an koleksi Ponpes Al-Yasir Jekulo, Kudus dari sisi kodikologi, rasm dan qirā`at. Naskah mushaf al-Qur`an ini diwariskan secara turun-temurun dan berasal dari abad ke-19. Ditinjau dari karakteristik iluminasinya, manuskrip ini identik dengan iluminasi mushaf Jawa. Iluminasi terdapat pada tiga bagian, yaitu awal, tengah dan akhir mushaf. Selain itu, juga terdapat iluminasi sederhana untuk membingkai tanda awal juz yang terletak secara simetris di sisi kanan dan kiri halaman mushaf. Dalam manuskrip ini terdapat simbol ayat, awal juz, rukū’. Bahan yang digunakan untuk kertas naskah ini adalah jenis kertas Eropa dengan bukti jika diterawang menggunakan cahaya terlihat garis-garis membujur serta terdapat watermark. Penelitian ini menemukan rasm yang digunakan dalam mushaf adalah rasm campuran antara rasm al-‘uthmāny dan rasm al-imlāī, tetapi lebih didominasi oleh rasm al-imlā`iy. Sedangkan dari segi qirā`at menggunakan ‘Āṣim riwayat Ḥafṣ. Kata Kunci: al-Qur`an, kodikologi, manuskrip, rasm, qirā`at

Abstract

This paper examines the collection of manuscript of Tafsir Jalālayn in the Pondok Pesantren Bustanul Ulum, Sedan District, Rembang, by focusing on textological and codicological aspects. This study is crucial to do to view the characteristic form of the text contained in the ancient manuscript of tafsir Jalālayn which then led to findings on how the Quranic interpretation was studied at that time. This research is a qualitative research with a codicology and textology (philology) approach. This finding strengthens the argument that the study of tafsir, especially Jalālayn, was introduced in the Rembang area in the first half of the 19th century, so that it can revise the findings of Van der Chijs and Van den Berg about the absence of tafsir teaching in Rembang area throughout the 19th century. This study identifies several characteristics found in the manuscript text. First, the use of the interlinear translation (Makna Gandhul) and its Javanese codes helps the students to understand the contents of Jalālayn's Arabic interpretation. Second, the hierarchy of language contained in its translation as a form of reflection of the reader's culture in the Javanese environment. Third, the existence of marginal notes written in Arabic indicates that attempts to comment on Jalālayn had been made earlier in the area. Another interesting finding is the consistent and fairly well-established use of codes in Arabic grammatical analysis, which is an indication that Makna Gandhul had evolved in that century.

Abstract

Abstrak Analisis linguistik dan sastra al-Qur`an sangat diperlukan dalam melakukan kajian al-Qur`an, karena kebahasaan menjadi poin penting dalam memahaminya. Sebab itu tulisanini menganalisis kata khauf dalam al-Qur`an. Hal ini bertujuan untuk memunculkan pesan-pesan yang dinamik dari kosakata al-Qur`an yang terkandung didalamnya. Tulisan ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan semantik Toshihiko Izutsu. Hal ini dilakukan untukmengungkap pandanganal-Qur`an terhadap istilah-istilah kunci dari kata khauf dalam tafsir sesuai konteks yang berlaku. Tulisan ini memperoleh kesimpulan bahwa makna dasar kata khauf adalah takut atau khawatir, pembunuhan (peperangan), pengetahuan, kulit merah yang disamak. Sedangkan makna sinkronik dan diakronik dari kata khauf tidak banyak berubah. Hanya saja, arti takut pada makna diakronik lebih kepada unsur ukhrawi, yakni takut akan azab Allah karena melanggar perintah-Nya. Kata Kunci: Khauf, Semantik al-Qur`an, Toshihiko Izutsu

Abstract

Tulisan ini membahas penafsiran QS. Al-Maidah: 38 tentang hukum potong tangan bagi pelaku pencurian. Ayat ini akan dikaji dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika, karena lafal-lafal dalam ayat tersebut merupakan simbol yang perlu dilakukan interpretasi. Salah satu teori semiotika yang menarik untuk dikaji dalam tulisan ini adalah semiotika Michale Riffaterre, yang menawarkan metode pembacaan dua tingkat, yaitu pembacaan heuristik dan hermeneutik (retroaktif), disempurnakan dengan kajian hipogram (intertekstual). Menurutnya, dalam memahami dan mengungkap makna suatu karya sastra tidak cukup dengan pembacaan heuristik (makna menurut konvensi bahasa) saja, perlu dilanjutkan dengan pembacaan secara hermeneutik yang berdasarkan pada penafsiran agar mendapatkan pemaknaan lebih komprehensif. Adapun hasil dari pengaplikasian semiotika Michale Riffaterre terhadap QS. Al-Maidah: 38 adalah: lafal al-sāriqu wa al-sāriqatu dan faqṭa’u aidiyahumā, mengalami dinamika dan perkembangan dari masa ke masa. Lafal sariq dengan makna dasar “mencuri” mengalami penciptaan arti (creating of meaning) yang bisa dimaknai dengan “korupsi”, karena memliki unsur yang sama. Sedangkan lafal faqṭa’u aidiyahumā yang makna literalnya adalah potong tangan mengalami penggantian arti (displacing of meaning) dengan makna ta’zīr (seperti denda, penjara, atau pengasingan), karena ayat tersebut dipahami secara majāzi bukan pada lafal yang umum. Sehingga, pesan utama atau spirit yang terkandung dalam ayat tersebut bukanlah pada jenis hukumannya tetapi pada efek jera yang ditimbulkannya. Abstract

Goldziher went to great length to impose the Qur'an as scripture by critisizing the Qirā'āt aspect. He argued that the existence of Qirā'āt was an evidence of inconsistency of the Qur'an in its reading variants. Goldziher also revealed that Muslims previously tried to equate the Qirā'āt, but this was not realized because it was hampered by the lack of punctuation system at that time. This article describes and analyzes some of the scholars' criticisms which has criticized Goldziher's opinion. From the analysis, it is found that Goldziher's argument is not supported by strong evidence and data, and tends to ignore historical data.

Abstract

Modern Indonesian had featured by two overlapping terms ‘Defending Religion’ and ‘Defending Islam’. Both are similar and popular term during the light of Islamic resurgence in the post-reformation era. As the term emerged publicly, religious discourse and debate concerning on the term are inevitable. The term, problematically, used by the particular group to legitimate numerous political actions, escalated the number of religious blasphemy. Surely, Muslims are obligated to defend Islam, but Islamic teaching also encourages the Muslim to respect communal-pluralistic society. By employing a thematic approach, this paper then argues that the idea of ‘defending religion’ should be revisited. Based on the occasion of revelation, the collected verses initially considered as an appeal to do “justice” (ʽadl), fight against the repressive community, persecution, displacement, and any outraged acts. Through tracing the occasion of revelation, this paper also argued that the idea of “defending religion” has also much to do with the idea of “defending diversity” in the context of pluralistic society.
