Abstract

Over the past few decades, there has been a shift in the media industry, where conventional media such as newspapers and television have started to lose their popularity. This change has been accelerated by the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is now being used in journalism. The use of AI raises the question of how local journalists respond to this technology: do they see AI as a tool that supports their work, or do they feel threatened by its presence? Using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory, this research seeks to explore local journalists' perceptions of AI tools in news processing. The research was conducted using a qualitative method using a case study approach, where data was obtained by conducting interviews with local journalists in Surakarta. The results found include first, AI tools improve journalists' work efficiency by speeding up typing, data search, editing, audio processing, and research, as well as monitoring online news trends. Second, although some AI tools are easy to use, mastering them still takes time and training, especially because AI sometimes makes work more difficult. Third, it is perceived that AI is not yet able to fully maintain the Journalistic Code of Ethics and press regulations need to be updated. However, it is perceived that AI will not violate ethics if humans are in full control.

Abstract

Love scamming that occurs through social media is increasingly troubling, especially for women who are vulnerable to forms of violence. This study aims to determine the perceptions of love scamming victims about the information manipulation tactics applied by the perpetrators in Semarang City through social media. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, with sampling technique using purposive sampling. The theory used in this research is Interpersonal Deception Theory (IDT). The results of the study found that based on the overall perception of the victim, the perpetrator applied various kinds of information manipulation tactics to influence the emotional side and trust of the victim. This finding shows the importance of understanding the social interaction between the perpetrator and the victim during the love scam, to see what manipulation tactics the perpetrator usually uses until the scam is successful.

Abstract

Since the covid-19 pandemic, the number of online streaming viewers in Indonesia has increased. The Indonesian film industry has also begun to launch films that challenge gender stereotypes and traditional beauty standards, for example the web series “Induk Gajah”. This research aims to find out how women's efforts in struggling for body rights are represented in the web series “Induk Gajah”. The use of Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis is carried out to observe the position of the subject, object and reader in the narrative to understand how the value of women's efforts in struggling for body rights. The results of this study found that the web series Induk gajah represents how the main character, Ira, tries to take control of her body and maintain her confidence although she faces pressure from her family and friends. In this web series, Mamak Uli and her friends act as subjects who push the beauty standards and Ira acts as an object. Ira also becomes the subject of the web series when she tries to resist the treatment of Mamak Uli and her friends.This web series emphasizes the importance of resistance to patriarchal norms to get freedom and control over their own bodies.

Abstract

This research explores the influence of musician information, stage act visuals, and song appeal in Instagram content posted by @trafficjammusic on audiences’ concert ticket purchase decisions. In the digital era, social media—particularly Instagram—serves as a persuasive communication platform through visual content, playing a key role in shaping consumer behavior. The study is grounded in the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), which explains how individuals process persuasive messages via central and peripheral routes. This is an explanatory quantitative study using survey data collected through online questionnaires from 98 followers of the @trafficjammusic Instagram account. The variables tested include musician information (central route), stage act visuals, and song appeal (both peripheral cues). Data were analyzed using partial, simultaneous, and multiple regression tests. Findings indicate that musician information and song appeal significantly and positively influence concert ticket purchase decisions. In contrast, stage act visuals showed a significant but negative impact, suggesting that even when visual performance is less prominent, audiences still tend to purchase tickets—likely due to emotional engagement and fan loyalty. Simultaneously, all three variables collectively have a significant and positive influence on purchase decisions. This study contributes to understanding how digital music promotion works through audience message elaboration and highlights the strategic role of informative and emotionally resonant content in independent music marketing. Practically, it recommends focusing on accurate musician information and catchy song content, while nurturing community engagement as a long-term asset.

Abstract

In addition to serving as entertaining media, films are a platform to convey messages about important issues, encouraging audiences to think more critically. One such film that delivers a meaningful message on social issues is Budi Pekerti, directed by Wregas Banutheja. This film received 17 nominations at the 2023 Indonesian Film Festival (FFI), making it the most nominated film of the year. Budi Pekerti is a drama that highlights the prevalent issue of cyberbullying in today’s society. This study aims to analyze the representation of cyberbullying and understand the conflicts arising from it through the narrative and cinematic elements of the film, using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. The research employs a qualitative method, with the object of study being the film Budi Pekerti. The approach is based on Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis model, which consists of three dimensions: text, discourse practice, and social practice. To deepen the analysis, the study incorporates Erik Erikson's psychosocial conflict theory. The researcher collected corpus focusing on cyberbullying and the conflicts resulting from it for analysis. The findings reveal that Budi Pekerti conveys strong messages through both verbal and visual representations. Beyond these messages, the study also explores the ideology and power dynamics present within the discourse of the film Budi Pekerti.

Abstract

Universities in Indonesia are now actively and ambitiously opening up internationalization opportunities for foreign students to have the opportunity to continue their higher education in Indonesia. This is also done by Sebelas Maret University, marked by the presence of Nigerian students in the Bachelor's program.The arrival of foreign students requires adaptation. This study uses a phenomenological approach to explore the in-depth experiences of Nigerian students in navigating the challenges and barriers of intercultural communication in the campus environment. This study focuses on the theory of accommodation strategies presented by Morrisan & Corry (2009), consisting of three options, namely: convergence, divergence, and excessive accommodation which are part of their adaptation. Using qualitative methods with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews and documentation. The subjects of the study were Nigerian students who had gone through a critical period, namely at least in the fifth semester of the undergraduate education program or who had been students of Sebelas Maret University for two years. The results of the study showed that there was the use of convergence and divergence strategies. And all informants were at the accommodation stage in cultural adaptation.

comment section of the YouTube channel CHIBI MARUKO-CHAN - Bahasa Indonesia. The aim of this research is to describe the forms of interaction among fans, understand how they convey identity, values, and culture through comments, and identify the factors that drive these interactions. This study employs a mixed methods approach with a case study method within the pragmatism paradigm. Data were collected through documentation techniques using purposive sampling on three episodes with the highest interaction levels : episodes 598, 605, and 633, resulting in a total of 2.440 comments analyzed using thematic content analysis. Data validity was ensured through theory triangulation, specifically fan culture theory and symbolic interaction theory. The findings show that fan interactions include emotional expressions, social interactions, and cultural participation. Fans’ collective identity is reflected through statements positioning themselves as part of a group sharing similar childhood experiences. The fans values are seen in comments expressing moral views and attitudes toward the content. Culture is conveyed through interpretations and associations of cultural symbols in the series with other cultures beyond the show. The factors driving interaction include the role of media features and YouTube accessibility, emotional attachment to the series, childhood memories and nostalgia, a sense of togetherness, collective identity claims, engagement in discussion and opinion-sharing, and the influence of moral values portrayed in the series. Overall, this study affirms that the comment section is not merely a space for responding to content, but also a social arena where fans express emotions, construct identity, and co-produce shared knowledge and culture.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of Rania Yamin's credibility and communication style on the interest in berkain of Instagram followers @raniaayamin. Berkain is a movement that encourages people, to wear Indonesia’s traditional patterned fabrics in their daily activities by combining them with modern clothing and sharing them through social media posts. The phenomenon of the berkain trend that is back in full swing on social media, especially among young people, is inseparable from the role of influencers who have enlivened this trend. Rania Yamin is one of the influencers who consistently wears berkain on her social media accounts. This research uses explanatory quantitative research methods with survey techniques through questionnaires distributed to 100 respondents aged 16-34 who are active followers of the @raniaayamin Instagram account. The data analysis techniques used include validity test, reliability test, multiple linear regression analysis, partial test, simultaneous test, and coefficient of determination test which are processed with the help of the SPSS 26. The results showed that both source credibility and communication style had a partial and simultaneous effect on interest in berkain. This research refers to the Elaboration likelihood model theory to explain if there are two paths in the process of receiving persuasive messages, namely the central and peripheral routes. Communication style variables have a greater influence than source credibility with t count > t table of 9,760 > 1,984. The source credibility variable also has a positive effect with t count 2,178 > 1,984. Both have a significant effect simultaneously with t count > t table of 131,170 > 3,09. Based on the results of the coefficient of determination, it can be concluded that the ability of the independent variables of credibility (X1) and communication style (X2) in this study affects the dependent variable of interest in berkain (Y) by 72.4% while 27.6% is influenced by other variables outside the study. Based on the analysis of per-variable data and indicators, it can be concluded that the audience processes messages through both peripheral and central routes.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Instagram account @life.at.prospect as an internal communication medium at Prospect Institute in strengthening internal branding and enhancing employee engagement. The account functions not only as a documentation platform but also as an informal communication channel that displays workplace dynamics, shared values, and a humanistic organizational culture. Through this platform, employees can access information, recall work experiences, and build closer social relationships with colleagues and the organization. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach (Yin, 2018). The informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique, considering that not all individuals within the Prospect Institute are directly involved with the @life.at.prospect account. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight informants—seven employees and one account manager—complemented by observation and content documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman (1984), including data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that @life.at.prospect serves three main functions: as a documentation medium, an informal communication channel, and a platform for strengthening social relationships. These functions support the internal branding process by representing the organization’s authentic and collaborative values while increasing employee engagement through emotional, cognitive, and behavioral involvement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how sexual violence against men is represented in the series Baby Reindeer using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. Sexual violence toward men remains a socially taboo topic and is rarely explored in mainstream media discourse. Therefore, this research seeks to uncover the discursive constructions embedded within audio-visual media narratives. The series Baby Reindeer, based on the true story of Richard Gadd, was chosen due to its complex portrayal of male trauma resulting from sexual violence. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing Fairclough’s three-dimensional analysis framework: textual analysis (micro), discourse practice (meso), and socio-cultural practice (macro). The data consists of selected scenes from the series that portray sexual violence—both physical, verbal, and psychological—which are analyzed through the lenses of representation theory and queer theory. The findings reveal that sexual violence against men in Baby Reindeer is represented through character complexity, visual symbolism, and dialogues that challenge hegemonic masculinity. The series subtly critiques patriarchal structures that often silence male victims and highlights how power relations and gender identity shape social meanings. Thus, Baby Reindeer not only illustrates personal trauma but also invites broader reflection on the societal discourse surrounding sexual violence and gender dynamics.
