Abstract

Cultural traditions hold a significant role in the lives of rural Javanese communities, serving as expressions of gratitude toward nature and ancestral heritage. These ritual practices are not only annual activities but also symbolize the community's adaptation to modernization, strengthening social ties and maintaining social cohesion. However, technological advancements and social changes pose a threat to traditional values, as seen in the modification of cultural practices to maintain relevance in the modern era. This article addresses two main questions: how these practices influence interreligious harmony and social cohesion, and the impact of technological developments on the implementation of local traditions. By employing a qualitative approach along with theories of social transformation and social cohesion, this study highlights the importance of adapting traditions to retain their relevance and cultural values. The findings reveal that cultural practices serve as a foundation for reinforcing social relationships and religious tolerance, emphasizing the need for multicultural education to foster a harmonious society. This study focuses on the transformation and adaptation of traditions that reflect local identity and social solidarity amidst modernization. In this context, the role of the younger generation in preserving traditions as cultural heritage that embodies spiritual and social values becomes crucial. These findings are expected to provide insights into the preservation of traditions in the ever-changing modern context.

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to analyze how the local practice of the Siman community in Kediri, called Larung sesaji becomes an instrument for maintaining and conserving the existence of water sources in Siman reservoir. Larung sesaji or Larungan is a series of rituals performed by the community every month of suro’ and Hindu melasti celebrations. The locals believe that these activities represent a form of sacrifice to the ancestral spirit so that, the ancestors will preserve nature and water availability in Siman. The research uses qualitative methods including interviews, documentation, data processing, and conclusions. Local community conservation theory of anthropologists Thomas Reuter and E.B. Tylor became an analytical point in the scope of environmental anthropology. The results showed that; [1], the tradition of the local community (Simanes) strongly relates to conservation issues. [2], Larungan became a conservation method to maintain the water crisis in Siman, and this local wisdom continues to this day

Abstract

Abstract The commercialization of public spaces is increasingly common in major cities, transforming areas once open and freely accessible into spaces focused on commercial activities. This shift not only changes the primary role of public spaces as venues for social interaction but also introduces challenges and opportunities for economic security. From an economic security perspective, the commercialization of public spaces offers both benefits and risks for communities and local governments. On one hand, it can stimulate economic growth through increased business activities, job creation, and urban revitalization. On the other hand, it can exacerbate socio-economic inequalities, marginalize vulnerable groups, limit access, and erode the social function of public spaces. This study investigates the impact of public space commercialization on economic security, focusing on how this transformation affects accessibility, economic disparity, and social welfare sustainability. Through literature analysis and case studies, the study provides comprehensive insights into managing public space commercialization sustainably while upholding inclusive and equitable economic security principles. The findings indicate that while commercialization offers economic opportunities, it also heightens social inequality, highlighting the need for inclusive policies to safeguard economic security. These findings aim to guide policymakers in balancing economic interests with the social functions of public spaces, ensuring that policies are inclusive, equitable, and support sustainable economic security for all societal groups

Abstract

The implementation of the Independent Curriculum is one of the important initiatives in improving the quality of education in Indonesia, especially in equipping students with 21st century skills. One of the main challenges faced is how to apply sustainability principles, such as the concept of zero waste into relevant and contextual learning. This article aims to analyze how the Independent Curriculum can be applied in the application of the concept of zero waste through based learning methods, such as Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The method used in this study is a case study in a school that has implemented the Independent Curriculum with a focus on the zero waste program. Data was collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and analysis of curriculum documents and student project results. The analysis was carried out to assess the effectiveness of the application of the based learning method in facilitating students' understanding of the principle of zero waste and the relationship between learning materials and real life. The results of the study show that the implementation of the Independent Curriculum through the based learning method is effective in increasing students' awareness of the importance of zero waste and encouraging them to be actively involved in real projects that have an impact on the environment. In addition, students show significant improvements in critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. The conclusion of this study is that the Independent Curriculum, when combined with the based learning method, has great potential to encourage education that is not only academically relevant but also has a positive impact on the environment and society

Abstract

This review article investigates and examines the obstacles and critical challenges to Yemen's development and economic security, focusing on the consequences of protracted conflict, hyperinflation, and inadequate government. The study employs a qualitative research methodology, synthesizing insights from scholarly literature, reports from international organizations, and case studies to explore the complex dynamics at play. Data was gathered by doing focused searches using keywords like “problems,” “development,” “economic security,” “stabilization,” and “Yemen” on websites including Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. This comprehensive analysis aims to provide a nuanced understanding of Yemen’s current economic landscape and the factors contributing to its decline. Results reveal that Yemen's protracted conflict has seriously harmed the country's economic framework, resulting in pervasive poverty, unstable food supplies, and a breakdown of social services. Corruption and inept governance have exacerbated these problems, impeding efforts to stabilize the economy and restore public trust. The impact of large international help is still limited because of continued violence and logistical obstacles in the delivery of relief. According to the study's findings, Yemen's recovery would necessitate a multimodal strategy that includes investments in education and career training, currency stabilization, economic diversification, and governance reforms. Effective governance and ongoing international support are also critical to achieving sustainable development and long-term stability.

Abstract

Identity, as a symbolic system to interpret the world, plays a significant role in shaping human understanding, including social and political structures. Reid (2010) listed key identity markers, including religion, language, bounded sovereign space, censuses, and names. Ethnicity and religion retain a critical point as identity makers since they precede the nationalist identity–and may as well outlast them. In line with Reid’s argument, Farzana (2017) notes the danger of the process of “us” and “other-ing” in Myanmar as an example of how identity is prone to be manipulated to assist the needs and aspirations of the dominant elites, while at the same time, politically excluded the non-dominant ethnics and communities. This article explores how material ideas of borders connect to immaterial structures. Two formations of borders–Myanmar and Indonesia–are compared with focused on scrutinizing similarities and differences in the formation of the immaterial border between the two countries. Despite showing a palpable hypothesis–Indonesia being a successful case of identity construction, while Myanmar is quite the opposite–, revisiting and reconsidering the concept of ‘Re-bordering and De-bordering’ of the two countries are relevant to add new perspectives on the formation of national identity

Abstract

Every human being is entitled to a sense of security and comfort in the form of love and protection within the family. However, recent cases of violence against women in Indonesia have reached emergency levels, violating human rights and categorized as crimes against the nature and dignity of humanity. The violence experienced by women is not only physical, but also involves psychological and emotional pressure and even sexual violence or marital rape. Ironically, cases of violence against women both physical and psychological have occurred since several years ago, and are accompanied by threats so that victims feel afraid to speak out. The occurrence of domestic violence, especially against women, has a significant impact on the psychological condition and development of children, which ultimately affects their future as adults. The trauma experienced by these children also affects their psychosocial conditions when interacting in their social environment. Children who often witness their parents arguing and violence committed by the father to the mother will be traumatized, making it difficult to make decisions when they grow up. Therefore, this should be a more serious concern for stakeholders, families and the surrounding community

Abstract

The increasing number of British Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTF) Returnees from Syria demanded a special response from Britain’s Government, compared to their previous ones. Britain with their infamous liberal values, without hesitation has abandoned certain limitations to liberty and human rights in order to protect their country from extremism carried by FTF returnees, by treating them as extraordinary criminals. Through literature study and Criminal Justice Model theory, this research identifies the contents in United Kingdom’s (UK) Counter Terrorism Strategy (CONTEST), UK government’s report, as well as independent review, and found that Britain’s counter terrorism is predominantly used on a domestic level, mainly pushing the implementation of Temporary Exclusion Orders (TEO) and Prevent Duty. The UK has proven that they are not fully bound to the liberal values and is also capable of enforcing state violence as an effort against terrorism. Since they are dealing with FTF returnees this time, who are ultimately the citizens of Britain, their counterterrorism efforts deal significantly with inward looking measures instead of global or international. These measures include controlling an alleged FTF returnee movement on their way home, and also stripping the rights to travel, residence, and movement. Although considered to be a comprehensive strategy, another outcome of the UK's form of counterterrorism is the unwanted generalization of the British muslim community.

Abstract

This article discusses the effectiveness of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in addressing the refugee crisis in Venezuela. The study examines how effective the UNHCR, as a regime dealing with refugees, has been in managing the refugee crisis that occurred in Venezuela from 2022 to 2023. According to Underdal, a regime can be considered effective if it is able to perform certain functions in line with the purpose for which it was established. Therefore, Underdal's Regime Effectiveness framework guides the analysis of this research, focusing on how the rules and recommendations of the UNHCR have addressed the refugee crisis that has persisted since Venezuela experienced a prolonged crisis, viewed through dependent, independent, and intervening variables. The economic crisis prompted many Venezuelans to leave their country in 2023. This phenomenon is supported by data released by the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), which indicates that nearly 7.7 million migrants and refugees had left Venezuela as of August 2023. This figure makes the Venezuelan refugee crisis the largest in the world, surpassing the number of people displaced from Syria and Ukraine. The large number of refugees seeking asylum has inevitably led to various new problems on a regional scale. This is because the countries receiving the refugees have begun to face the difficulties and become overwhelmed in accommodating them. The challenges include limited access to food, healthcare, education, and the emergence of Xenophobia among the refugee population. Furthermore, there has been an increase in cases of gender-based violence in some host countries. The Venezuelan refugee crisis has also received limited support from the international community, making it one of the most underfunded refugee crises in the world, with even less funding than the Rohingya or South Sudan crises. The UNHCR, as the primary agency responsible for safeguarding the welfare of refugees, is the key actor in this crisis. Through data collection methods such as literature reviews, which include books, journals, newspapers, and internet sources. This research aims to analyze whether the UNHCR has been effective in addressing the Venezuelan refugee crisis based on Underdal's regime effectiveness theory. Additionally, the author will examine the relationship between aspects of human security and the refugee crisis at hand

Abstract

This study explores the detrimental effects of xenophobia on diplomacy and international relations, focusing on the U.S.-China relationship and the broader Asia-Pacific region. Xenophobia, the fear or hatred of foreigners, has significantly strained bilateral relations, fostering mistrust and hindering cooperation on crucial issues. It has shaped negative public perceptions of China, leading to a climate of fear and intolerance. Economically, xenophobia can lead to protectionism, trade barriers, and a decline in economic activity. It can also disrupt cultural exchange, undermining efforts to build understanding and trust between different cultures. Xenophobia can escalate regional tensions, erode trust among nations, and weaken regional organizations. To address these challenges, regional leaders must prioritize tolerance, understanding, and collaboration. By combating harmful stereotypes, promoting cultural exchange, and addressing economic concerns, they can mitigate the negative impacts of xenophobia and create a more harmonious and cooperative environment for diplomacy and international relations in the Asia-Pacific region
