The data were obtained from a semi-structured interview methodology conducted to six full-time lecturers. Furthermore, the research was based on Miles and Huberman’s methodology to perform the data analysis. The study found that innovation can improve competitiveness. The study found three key aspects during the emergence of innovation, which are benchmarking, knowledge stock, and information. The process of innovation emerges via an interactive and intensive discussion. Interactive control system, as part of the management control, holds an important role in the process of innovation emergence. The study is as one of the references for the department of social science to create innovation.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to investigate the Relationship between Maternal, Household, and Socio-Economic Characteristics on Household Food Security in Aceh-Indonesia. The data used are cross-section data, secondary data from the Economic Census of Indonesia in 2016 (BPS, 2016), from 23 districts / cities. The central message of the present empirical analysis is that relatively simple indicators perform well in locating food security. The analysis proves that mother’s age has a significant effect on average calorie intake at the household level. This may be due to the fact that mother’s age plays an important role in the provision of proper food to her family. Higher-aged mothers can understand better about the food quality and requirement for the family as compared to low-aged mother. Environmental factors like access to safe water and better sanitation facilities within housing premises indirectly enhance the absorptive capacity of available food intake. Thus environmental factors could play an important role in food security through calorie intake, irrespective of economic status of the household. This analysis further strengthens the earlier findings that higher food intake availability alone may not lead to improved health outcome, unless measures are taken to improve access to safe water and sanitation. Contribution of dependency ratio in per capita calorie intake also appeared to be significant in this study. This shows that high dependency ratio reduces the per capita calorie intake due to a larger share in food items among a household.

Abstract

Islam brings upon harmony and peace to mankind. From an architectural perspective, harmony is valued based on how a space is designed to bring comfort, peace and protection to the occupants. A comfortable home is a basic necessity. The design of a house has to be planned by taking into consideration the physical factors, environment and the major needs of the occupants. Unfortunately, nowadays the design of the modern Malay houses has neglected the factor of harmony which causes discomfort to the occupants. The design of the modern Malay houses no longer takes into consideration factors such as climate, the Malay culture, religious restrictions and the comfort of the occupants. This has consequently produced designs of buildings which are not conducive to be occupants. The solution to this problem is the Malay heritage architecture. This research will look into the benefits of the Malay architecture, specifically the Minangkabau architecture in Negeri Sembilan. The main advantage of the Minangkabau architecture is the ability of the craftsmenin understanding the needs of the environment while designing the houses. The living culture which is Islamic based has blended well among the Malays and the craftsmen have successfully materialised it in designing the Malay houses.Generally, the Minangkabau architecture clearly follows the Islamic concept in providing harmony and comfort to the occupants. This research attempts to see how the Minangkabau architecture has practically applied the Islamic concept in the modern Malay houses to build harmony and comfortable houses in terms of ventilation, the usage of natural sunlight, the design of nature-friendly space and the usage of space to preserve the tradition and culture which is based on Islam. Research is carried out by making comparisons between modern Malay architecture and Minangkabau heritage architecture in relation to the concept of harmony in Islam. The finding of the research could be developed as guidelines in designing houses in Malaysia to provide harmony and comfort to the occupants. Keywords: Architecture, Minangkabau Heritage, Islamic Concept, Harmony, Comfort

Abstract

The research and development have been done to develop student worksheets (LKPD) based on predicting, observing, and explaining (POE). The development research model used refers to the ADDIE development model which consists of 5 stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The assessment of product quality of LKPD development results carried out by validator and 14 physics teachers. The percentage of eligibility obtained from each validator and physics teacher is 77% and 83%. The test implementation of LKPD products applied to 20 students of class X MIA 2 SMAN 3 Unggul Sigli that chosen by purposive sampling. The results of a POE-based LKPD testing can improve the students’ critical thinking skills. Based on these results, it can be concluded that POE-based LKPD developed with the ADDIE development model is decent to be implemented. An investigation on a broader scale should be undertaken to assess the effectiveness in teaching physics.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of ownership concentration on the financial performance of firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange from 2008 to 2012. The methodology used is multiple linear regression. The financial performance is measured with return on assets (ROA). The research shows that ownership concentration significantly and positively influences firm performance. This implies that the control of large shareholders is effective in enhancing firm performance of listed firms in Indonesia. This paper is particularly important to the policymakers of firms in Indonesia and other developing economies since it provides a comprehensive insight into the ownership concentration – firm performance relationship and therefore it helps them to formulate the best policies.

Abstract

As an international language, English has been widely used in today’s workplace as an interaction tool between people within and dealing with the organization. A good English proficiency is a must acquired communication skill among staffs in any organization, particularly those at the service desk.  As the front liners who manage the counter and interact with customers, the quality of their communication skills will reflect on the overall organization’s performance. Hence, there is a need for service desk staffs to obtain a good English communication skill in order to effectively deliver the information and serve the customers well. However, despite of much emphasis given by the government as efforts to increase Malaysians’ proficiency of English language, there has been lacking in the level of English communication skills among front desk staffs. Thus, studies that address the problem and evaluate the staffs’ preparedness to take up English courses and trainings are needed. Then, is it compulsory for organizations to consider only staffs with good English proficiency as their front liners at the service desk? In line with this need, this study attempts to determine factors influencing English usage preferences among the service counter staffs in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). A quantitative survey was completed by 80 front liners from each respective school in USM. The results showed that in general, the irregular English usage for communication, frequent encounters with foreign students, and less English communication with colleagues and superiors were factors that influence the staff’s level of English proficiency. They were also found to be more convenient in using the national language, i.e. Malay language while dealing with students at the service desks. Nevertheless, the staffs were found to be very keen to take up English classes and trainings provided by the university to build more confidence and motivation in using the language for communication. As implication, the paper addresses the need for the university service counter staffs to grasp the skills and knowledge in English communication as the level of their proficiency in English will reflect the university’s identity.Key words: English language, Factors, Preferences, Service counter staff.
