Abstract

The background study of this research was based on the lack of mathematical understanding and students’ learning independency of Class X at one of the senior high schools in Aceh Besar. The test results on the trigonometry subject showed that only 3 out of 10 students (30%) passed the minimum score. This condition was also found during the observation of student activities in their learning process. Students tended to rely on teachers and friends to cope with the problems, such as lack of initiative, have poor learning management and easy to feel discouraged. The main objectives of this research were (1) to improve students’ mathematical comprehension, and (2) to improve students’ learning independency through discovery learning model on the trigonometry subject. This is a classroom action research. The subjects of this study were ten students at Class X of science class. The research instruments consisted of a set of mathematical comprehension test and students independent learning questionnaire. The technique of data collection used was a qualitative approach, and the collected data was described in descriptive form. The results show that there was an improvement of the learning process through the discovery of learning model, based on the mathematical comprehension test results (from 68.3% in cycle I to 71.7% in cycle II), and the improvement of student’s independent learning (from 42.2% in cycle I to 47.1% in cycle II). Therefore, Discovery learning model effectively improves students' understanding ability, encourage student-learning independency and enlarge students’ mathematical comprehension. Keywords: mathematical comprehension, learning independence, discovery learning.

Abstract

Colonialism is commonly perceived and portrayed negatively in any discoursesand even considered as an evil. This perception is generally connected with the harsh, severe and brutal exploitation of the people and land being colonized. It is related to its historical and cultural denigration, oppression, suppression, economic exploitation and deprivation, literary prejudice and linguistic interference on the side of the colonized. However, apart from the negative impacts due to the colonialism, there is no doubt at all that ithas brought some certain positive impacts for the colonized. Colonizers have civilized huge numbers of peopleby spreading enlightenment, knowledge, information, technology, and even a love of learning all over the globe. It is while governing the indigenouspeople that theycivilizethem. This studyaims at critically studying on the colonialism as a redeeming evil in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. It highlights the enlightenment, progress and divergent developments brought by colonialism to the Nigerian Igbo. The research result shows that colonialismhas brought some positiveimpacts and undeniable landmark achievements to the Igbo in terms of establishment of religion, building ofchurches, schools, hospitals, courts, government, trade and commerce, theacceptanceofoutcasts, thestoppageofthekilling oftwins, that have made it a necessary redeeming evil, and even a blessing in disguise. It also reveals that Chinua Achebeactually acknowledges that colonialismhas brought positive impacts to the Nigerian Igbo. The method used in thisresearch is descriptive research proposed by Kothari (2004).  Keywords: Colonialism, redeeming evil, Igbo, outcast, ogbanje, osu.

Abstract

In fact Islamic economics and people’s economy have the same purposes, economic welfare and justice for everyone. Based on Islam, justice and welfare in economics should be based on Islamic norms and ethics, so all of economic systems are running in accordance with Islamic Shari’s. People’s economy in Indonesia has been run for a long time by planned institution, which is cooperative.  Cooperative is the spearhead which is expected by founding fathers of this state as a tool for economic equity and justice. In the concept and implementation, cooperative institution has much conformity with institutions of economic empowerment expected by Islam.

Abstract

This study intends to report the perceptions of 26 Syiah Kuala University students on the strengths and the weaknesses of their native-speaking English teachers (NESTs). Collected data include close-ended questionnaire with 18 (eighteen) questions and open-ended interview with 4 (four) questions.  Result of the study revealed that the students perceive the following as the NEST’s strength: creative in providing teaching materials, ideal model for pronunciation, and source of cultural information of the language. However some students were dissatisfied with the NEST’s performance in explaining grammars in the classroom. The result of the study indicates that even though NESTs are perceived as superior and a good model in teaching the target language, they also need to struggle with some obstacles in order to successfully teach the students.

Abstract

Mathematical proofing ability is important to learn because it is very influential on the ability of mathematics. The low ability of mathematical proofing is still a problem that is often encountered. Therefore, the low capability of the evidence needs to be explored to know the root of the more detailed problems to be used as initial data so that the solution becomes more precise and effective. Some researchers claim that gender differences also affect mathematical skills. This study aimed to determine the errors and causes in the proof of geometry regarding gender differences. This research was qualitative descriptive research conducted in the Department of Mathematics Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Syiah Kuala University with subject consisting of male and female students. Techniques of collecting data were done through tests and interviews. Data analysis was done based on Miles and Huberman stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The error data compiling the geometry proof was analyzed based on Newmann Error Analysis (NEA). The results showed that: 1) mistakes made by male students tend to Process Skill Error; 2) mistakes made by female students tend to Transformation Error; 3) the cause of errors due to the lack of understanding of the concepts (definition, theorem, illustrations, and usefulness) of the students, the lack of logical knowledge and the structure of the method of proof (the way of conclusion either direct or indirect evidence) limitations of language and notation, and lack of care in the settlement procedure. Keywords: students’ errors, geometric proof, gender differences.

Abstract

ASEAN's decision to accelerate the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 based on the Cebu Declaration, 2007. ASEAN then create a blueprint that describes the steps that must be reached in the AEC in 2015 such as the elimination of taxes and tariffs based on sectors which have been agreed, and all the factors of production such as labor and capital are allowed to move freely crossed the line of ten member countries through the common market. In the field of investment, ASEAN has an ASEAN Comprehensive Investment Agreement (ACIA) to conduct a review of the Framework Agreement on the ASEAN Investment Area (AIA) and ASEAN Investment Guarantee Agreement (IGA). The establishment of ACIA is to encourage a more liberal investment environment, transparent, competitive and facilitative. Indonesia has been preparing the investment regime under ASEAN for example by creating a variety of legal instruments to further open the influx of foreign investment and ensure equal treatment of foreign investors to domestic investors as desired by the ACIA. The problem today is that besides the existence of ACIA as regional investment agreements under the ASEAN there is also a multilateral investment agreement under the WTO (TRIMs). In most small scale there is also Bilateral  Investment  Treaty  (BIT). That  condition is  still added  to the  national investment regimes of each country, including for example the Indonesian national investment laws. Based on the above, this paper will examine the ASEAN agreement on investment (ACIA) and the Indonesia national legal arrangements. Then it will also examine Indonesian Government policy on BIT with respect to the ACIA. The purpose of this study was to explain the relevance of Indonesia’s national investment law harmonization with ASEAN Agreement and to determine the relevance of the BIT with the ACIA.

Abstract

Knowledge sharing plays a significant role in enhancing innovation and creativity. Understanding what factors influence knowledge sharing among individuals in an organization has been widely studied, especially factors which derived from social exchange and psychological contract theory. However, how career growth affects knowledge sharing behavior in terms of psychological contract theory has not been studied in the previous literature. Therefore, this study aims to investigate career growth’s effect on knowledge sharing in an organization. The career growth is reflected from four elements; career goal progress, professional ability development, promotion speed, and remuneration growth. From 85 questionnaires distributed to lecturers and staffs at Syiah Kuala University, the results support the hypothesis stating that there is a significant relationship between organizational career growth and knowledge sharing behavior.  Keywords:Organizational career growth, knowledge sharing behavior.

Abstract

This article aims to know the application of dividend policy in developing and developed countries. After reviewed 29 articles that located in ASIA and Europe and published by Elsevier and J-Stor publisher found the system of Common law is more dominant used in developed countries where the protection of the investors in stock market tends to be higher. Meanwhile, the system of Civil law tends to be applied by developing countries where the protection of the investors in the share market is relative low. Based the research results in some developed countries found that the application of the outcomes model related to dividend policy, although there exist different outcomes related to tax on dividends and profitability of the firms. While in developing countries, dividend policy is relatively lower that depends on the management of firms, and indicated the application of substitution model related to dividend policy.

Abstract

This research was based on Qatari Emir’s speech, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on July 21, 2017, that still preferred to use polite language, although Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt discontinued their diplomatic relations with Qatar and executed embargo it and on June 5, 2017. This research was aimed to analyze the language politeness in Qatari Emir’s speech and reveal the intention of its use.  The theory used in this research was Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987) which relates the speech politeness with face threatening act (FTA) and classifies them into four kinds namely strategy on record without redressive action-baldly, strategy on record with redressive action-positive politeness, strategy on record with redressive action-negative politeness, and strategy off record.  The method used in this research was qualitative-descriptive.  The data analyzed in this research was Qatari Emir’s speech text on July 21, 2017 which officially sourced from the government of Qatar.  Based on the findings of this research, the writer identified 26 politeness speech with 4 on record without redressive action-baldly strategy, 5 positive politeness strategy, 14 negative politeness strategy, and 3 off-record strategy.  The numerous use of negative politeness compared with other strategies on Qatari Emir’s speech showed that Qatari Emir responded the act of its four neighboring countries by negative attitudes and negative feelings such as rejection, anger and satire yet still maintaining the relationship.  Besides, the number of positive politeness showed that Qatari Emir still considered the friendliness and closeness in its relationship with its four neighboring countries. Keywords:Politeness, Qatari Emir, speech.
