Abstract

The spread of hoaxes on digital platforms has become a significant challenge in Indonesia, particularly in Bengkulu Province. This study examines the role of local government public relations, media, and influencers in combating hoaxes and improving digital literacy among the public. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, this research explores the collaborative strategies and lived experiences of key stakeholders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. The findings highlight the importance of collaboration between the government, media, and influencers in creating effective digital literacy campaigns. The study reveals a critical communication gap, where government PR has not fully optimized the role of influencers as strategic "opinion leaders" to reach younger demographics. While influencers demonstrate high engagement, the absence of standardized ethical guidelines, like those of traditional journalism, poses challenges for information accuracy. Key Challenges identified include low levels of digital literacy, insufficient regulatory frameworks, and the uncontrolled influence of social media actors. The findings underscore that cross-sectoral collaboration is essential for effective digital literacy campaigns, leveraging the emotional proximity of local media and the broad reach of influencers among younger audiences. The study concludes that a robust regulatory framework for influencers, combined with structured and continuous digital literacy programs, is essential to strengthen public resilience against hoaxes. These findings contribute to the development of government PR strategies in navigating the post-truth era at a regional level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process of social reconstruction of traditional fishermen represented in the documentary film Sang Punggawa Laut Sumbawa. Rather than viewing the film solely as a medium of representation, this research positions it as a cultural text that constructs meanings about the social, economic, and cultural realities of coastal communities. The study employs a qualitative interpretive approach using Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis, encompassing the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth, to examine how the identities and lived experiences of fishermen are reconstructed through visual and narrative signs. To strengthen interpretation, the findings are further contextualized through literature review and in-depth interviews with the Head of the Traditional Fishermen Community, maritime academics, and traditional fishermen in the Riau Islands. The results show that the film reconstructs fishermen not merely as marginalized coastal actors, but as adaptive social agents capable of negotiating structural inequalities through technological innovation, collective solidarity, and shifting family roles. Economic vulnerability is portrayed alongside resilience, while traditional values coexist with modernization processes. The transformation of gender roles within fishermen households also reflects changing social dynamics in coastal life. These findings demonstrate that documentary films can move beyond simple representation by articulating broader processes of social change and reconstruction within marginalized communities. This study offers an analytical perspective that links media texts to the reconstruction of social realities, while reaffirming documentary film as an important medium for understanding the collective experiences of Indonesian traditional fishermen.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the psychological motives and gratifications that underlie Generation Z’s consumption of user-generated dashcam videos on social media, using the Uses and Gratifications Theory as the guiding framework. A qualitative descriptive design with a phenomenological approach was employed to explore participants lived media experiences. Nine Generation Z individuals aged 18–21 years were selected as digital natives. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring motivational patterns. The findings reveal eight dominant viewing motives: passing time, companionship, escape, enjoyment, social interaction, relaxation, information acquisition, and excitement. The results indicate that dashcam video consumption reflects a multifaceted media use pattern in which viewers pursue both utilitarian benefits, such as road safety awareness, and emotional gratification. The study confirms the applicability of the Uses and Gratifications Theory to emerging user-generated audiovisual content. Dashcam viewers function as active media users who selectively engage with niche content to satisfy specific psychological and informational needs, highlighting the evolving dynamics of digital media consumption among Generation Z.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of religious authority in digital media through Islamic political discourse on YouTube, focusing on the content produced by Guru Gembul. Employing Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, this research analyzes selected YouTube videos published between December 2024 and April 2025, using video transcripts and visual elements as primary data. The study investigates how religious authority is discursively constructed in the absence of formal religious or academic credentials. The findings reveal that authority is produced through casual language, emotional appeals, and trend-responsive narratives that prioritize audience engagement over epistemic depth. Rather than presenting systematic theological arguments, book references function as symbolic markers of intellectual credibility. It indicates a shift in how expertise is evaluated in digital religious spaces, where visibility, affectivity, and resonance with audiences become central sources of authority. This study contributes to scholarship on digital religion and media discourse by demonstrating how religious authority is reconfigured through platform-mediated discursive practices, extending Critical Discourse Analysis beyond traditional institutional contexts. In practice, the findings highlight the importance of digital literacy for critically assessing religious authority in online environments.

Abstract

The conferral of the National Hero title upon Soeharto has sparked widespread criticism and controversy where the media play a vital role in shaping public perceptions of the government’s decision. This study aims to analyze how news media frame the discourse surrounding the conferral of the National Hero title on Soeharto. This research employs a qualitative approach using Robert M. Entman’s framing analysis, which comprises four analytical elements: problem definition, causal diagnosis, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. The study examines news coverage published by ANTARA and Tempo. The findings reveal contrasting framing patterns between the two media outlets. ANTARA frames the issue as national recognition of Soeharto’s contributions to development and political stability. The controversy is viewed as reflecting different public perspectives. At the same time, the moral evaluation highlights appreciation for historical services, and the treatment recommendation centers on institutional procedures in granting the National Hero title. In contrast, Tempo presents the issue as a controversial political decision amid ongoing debates over human rights violations and corruption. Its coverage underscores the ethical implications of honoring a contested historical figure and argues that the decision is inappropriate given these unresolved controversies. These findings show how different editorial perspectives influence media framing and create competing narratives of historical legitimacy within Indonesia’s political memory.

Abstract

In the context of increasing public reliance on religious-based media as credible sources of information, Islamic media play an important role in shaping moral discourse and public interpretation of political events. The 2025 demonstrations in Indonesia raised various humanitarian concerns, including violence, student arrests, and human rights violations. This research aims to analyze how NU Online and Suara Muhammadiyah frame humanitarian issues in their coverage of the August–September 2025 demonstrations. The study employs a qualitative framing analysis using Robert Entman’s framing model. Data were collected from selected news articles published by both media outlets during the peak period of the demonstrations and analyzed comparatively to identify similarities and differences in framing patterns. The findings reveal that both media outlets emphasize humanitarian concerns but construct them through different interpretative frameworks influenced by their organizational orientations. NU Online tends to frame demonstrations through narratives of human rights, social justice, and protection of demonstrators, while Suara Muhammadiyah emphasizes social ethics, moderation, dialogue, and political stability. These differences indicate that Islamic online media function as active agents in constructing humanitarian discourse and shaping public understanding of political demonstrations. This study contributes theoretically to the development of framing theory in the context of Islamic digital media and enriches the literature on Islamic political communication. In practice, the findings suggest the importance of ethical, balanced framing in religious media coverage of political events discourse.

Abstract

This study examines how the Twitter/X base account @fessthaii functions as a safe space for Thai Boys Love (BL) fans in Indonesia, where BL consumption often encounters stigma within a heteronormative social context. While anonymity on digital platforms is commonly assumed to create safe spaces, limited research has explored how safety is socially constructed within anonymous fandom communities. This research adopts a constructivist paradigm and employs virtual ethnography. Data were collected through participant observation, online interviews with five active followers, and documentation of menfess posts, comment threads, and moderation practices. Data were analyzed using Analisis Media Siber (AMS) across four levels: media space, media document, media object, and media experience. The findings show that @fessthaii operates as a safe space not merely through anonymity but through continuous social negotiation involving moderation practices, community rules, peer support, and affective labour from administrators. Safety is therefore produced relationally through interaction, shared norms, and power relations rather than as a technical feature of the platform. This study contributes to digital media and fandom studies by demonstrating that safe spaces in stigmatized online communities are actively constructed through governance and collective participation.

Abstract

According to Nielsen, podcast listening in Indonesia grew to over 3.6 million, with weekly episode consumption increasing by 10%. Podcasts have become popular among younger audiences due to their on-demand nature, diverse content, and personalized experience. This study analyzes the global transformation of podcast use between 2019 and 2024 as part of the evolving media landscape in the post-broadcast age. Using a systematic literature review and descriptive-qualitative analysis on 48 articles, the findings reveal that podcasts have developed in an interdisciplinary manner, functioning not only as entertainment but also as tools for education, journalism, the representation of marginalized communities, and platform-based economic strategies. Importantly, podcasts reshape human experience by fostering intimate listening cultures, participatory communities, digital literacy practices, and new forms of socio-cultural engagement. The results highlight the significant social, cultural, and political implications of podcasts, ranging from community empowerment and digital literacy to the challenges posed by the dominance of global platforms. The study suggests the need for policies to establish a regulatory framework that supports the local podcast ecosystem.
