Abstract

The surge in medical waste generation following the Covid-19 pandemic, limited treatment facilities, and the expansion of healthcare services have driven the need for more integrated and sustainable waste management systems. This study aims to analyze the impact of medical waste treatment services on air quality and community involvement, as well as to formulate sustainability strategies. A mixed-method approach was used for data collection and analysis, while strategy formulation was conducted using SWOT analysis. Conducted at PT X, a medical waste management service industry located in Polokarto District, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java Province. The study found that air quality from medical waste processing activities complied with quality standards. However, community participation remains low, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs are not yet oriented toward community development, resulting in suboptimal long-term benefits. The strategies needed based on the results of the SWOT analysis are technological intervention with environmentally friendly fuel substitution, enhancing CSR innovation towards community development, and building a landfill facility.

Abstract

The area surrounding Jatinegara Station has transformed into a commercial zone, driving the expansion of surrounding settlements into densely populated areas. This condition limits the availability of amenities and infrastructure, particularly Green Open Space (GOS), as increasing business intensity drives the transformation of GOS into built-up areas. This study aims to assess the current condition of GOS in the Jatinegara Station area and compare it with the standards stipulated in the Minister of Public Works Regulation Number 05/M/PRT/2008. The method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive analysis technique. GOS requirements are determined based on a standard ratio of 30% of total land area, a standard requirement of 20 square meters per person, and a hierarchical method based on oxygen absorption capacity. The analysis stages involve identifying GOS characteristics, followed by assessments of accessibility, shape, and type. Research findings indicate that while GOS needs based on population and oxygen have been met at 20.78% of the total TOD area, this remains below the regulatory standard of 30%, which requires 20% public and 10% private GOS. Therefore, increasing the GOS area through development and management initiatives that emphasize carbon dioxide-absorbing plants is necessary.

Abstract

Hydrometeorological disaster management in urban areas presents significant challenge in urban and environmental governance. Nature-based solutions (NbS) offer an innovative approach that utilizes natural ecosystem functions to reduce the risks of hydrometeorological disasters and enhance climate resilience in urban environments. This study aims to analyze the interrelationships among NbS components withspecific focus on flood control and risk reduction in urban areas. The analysis was conducted through literature review and bibliometric analysis of 15 relevant scientific publications from the past decade. The results were visualized and mapped using VOSviewer software. The network mapping and visualization reveal that topics related to NbS are strongly associated with climate change, hydrometeorological disasters, ecosystems, urban governance, biodiversity, and sustainability. The implementation, effectiveness, and policy dimensions of NbS highlight ongoing challenges in performance evaluation that are essential to optimize their application. Based on the literature review, to reduce hydrometeorological disaster risks, the major challenges in implementing NbS depend on performance assessment, community participation, and multi-sectoral collaboration.

Abstract

Traditional markets contribute 14.48% of national waste generation. This study aims to formulate an inorganic waste management strategy for Kebayoran Lama Market Area 11, Jakarta. A mixed-methods approach was applied involving 150 respondents (75 traders and 75 consumers) and waste generation measurements over eight consecutive days (SNI 19-3964-1994) from 26 traders out of 698. The results showed that the average inorganic waste generation from the sample was 3.014 kg/day, which extrapolates to 80.91 kg/day for the entire market, dominated by plastic (70%). The reduction potential through mass balance analysis reached 79% (2.381 kg/day from the sample). Traders' understanding of national regulations (Law No. 18/2008) was very low (16%), while consumers demonstrated higher understanding (37.4%). The Mann-Whitney test indicated no significant difference in participation perception between the two groups (p = 0.3315). Multi-criteria evaluation using PROMETHEE established priority strategies: provision of segregated 3R waste bins (Φ+0.5300), revitalization of the waste bank (Φ+0.2500), and education programs (Φ+0.1400). The novelty lies in integrating mass balance, non-parametric statistics, and multi-criteria decision-making. These strategies have the potential to increase residue reduction by up to 90% and support circular economy development.

Abstract

The Krueng Aceh River is an important water resource vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures from urban activities and domestic waste. This study aimed to evaluate water quality based on physicochemical parameters and determine its status using the Pollution Index (PI). A quantitative descriptive approach with grab sampling was applied at three stations (upstream, midstream, downstream). Laboratory analyses followed Indonesian National Standards (SNI), and water quality assessment referred to Class II standards. Results showed neutral pH (7.0–7.1), low TSS (0.0127–0.0407 mg/L) and TDS (2.06–2.29 mg/L), and increasing sulfate from upstream to downstream (5.73–107.40 mg/L), all below threshold limits. Heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni) were below detection limits. In contrast, ammonia exceeded the standard at all stations, with the highest concentration at S2 (0.3582 mg/L), making it the dominant factor influencing water quality. The PI indicated good quality at S1 (0.9856) and lightly polluted conditions at S2 (1.6175) and S3 (1.1789). These findings suggest potential water quality degradation, highlighting the need for sustainable management through pollutant load control and regular monitoring.

Abstract

Seaweed cultivation is a major economic activity in Indonesia's coastal areas, but its sustainability challanged by complex socio-ecological interactions that are not fully captured by conventional sustainability assessment approaches. The Rapid Appraisal for Fisheries (Rapfish) method has been widely applied, but most studies still employ generic multidimensional attributes that do not explicitly reflect the principles of the Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA). This study integrates EAA principles into the selection and grouping of Rapfish attributes to provide a holistic assessment of seaweed farming systems. This study aims to assess the multidimensional sustainability of Eucheuma cottonii cultivation in Sampolawa Bay, South Buton Regency. The analysis was conducted using the Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) approach in the Rapfish tool across five sustainability dimensions: ecology, economy, society, technology, and institutions. The results showed that EAA integration enhances the comprehensive assessment framework, especially in the social and institutional dimensions. Overall, seaweed cultivation in Sampolawa Bay was categorized as moderately sustainable with an index value of 60.64. The social and ecological dimensions were the main pillars of sustainability, whereas the economic dimension was a limiting factor requiring attention. particularly regarding market accessibility and price stability to ensure the sustainability of seaweed cultivation in the future.
