Abstract

Traditional games play a vital role in developing children’s motor skills, especially when practiced in a family setting. This article aims to examine the impact of traditional games within families on the development of children’s gross and fine motor skills through a literature review and case studies. The study employs a qualitative approach, combining the analysis of relevant literature and direct observation of families engaging in traditional games. The literature review identifies various traditional games that contribute positively to motor skill development. Games like jump rope, congklak (a traditional board game), and egrang (stilts) are known to improve coordination, balance, muscle strength, and agility. Case studies were conducted on several families who routinely played traditional games with their children. Observations revealed that children actively involved in traditional games exhibited better motor skill development than those less engaged in such activities. This article also highlights that parental involvement in traditional games not only strengthens family bonds but also creates a supportive environment for children’s motor skill development. This involvement includes active parental roles guiding and participating in the games, helping children understand the rules and enhancing their social skills. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of traditional games within families as a tool for developing children’s motor skills. Hopefully, these findings will encourage families and educators to integrate traditional games into children’s daily activities as part of an effective motor development strategy. Further research is recommended to explore various aspects of traditional games and their impact on child development in different contexts.

Abstract

Ideally, teachers possess four competencies: professional, pedagogical, social, and personality. One of the competencies that did not get much attention is personality competency. This research employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to understanding the teachers’ experiences and how they value and implement personality competence in their daily teaching practices. Interviews and observations of the teacher and headmaster inside and outside the class were conducted to obtain the data. The result suggested that the teachers have implemented it in their daily lives as teachers, despite having a limited understanding of the complex terminology in the concept of personality competency.

Abstract

As a product of the creative process, song lines or lyrics are also forms of poetry containing aesthetical and ethical values. Song lyrics and poetry are like two sides of the coin, intertwined. Classical Minang song lyrics as a cultural product of traditional Minang people are objects that contain moral messages and life values. The cultural values contained in the song texts come from the experiences and life realities of the people. This research aims to reveal the meaning and cultural values contained in classical Minang songs. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literary sociology approach/theory. The research results show that cultural values in the Minang song texts align with the life attitudes of the Minang people. The cultural values of the Sumbang duo Baleh in the song “Si Nona” composed by Syamsul Arifin and the song “Lamang Tapai” composed by Nuskan Syarif are the traditional songs providing advice for Minang young women in maintaining their positive self-esteem. The classical Minang songs can be used as a means to preserve cultural values in developing the morals of future generations. By understanding the texts of Minang regional songs, they will appreciate and maintain various elements of their ancestral culture, as a reflection of the identity of the Minang people and elements of national culture.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of the role of parents, especially the role of the father which cannot be ignored. This study aims to see parental mediation given by fathers and mothers to children when using gadgets. The research method uses a qualitative approach with a case study research design. Data collection uses in-depth interviews and field notes involving three parents who have children aged 2-5 years in Harjamukti, Cirebon City which were analysed using grounded theory. The results of this study indicate that parents discuss, search, choose, and explain content that can be accessed in active mediation. Then, in the restriction mediation, parents provide restrictions on time, content, application, and distance. Co-viewing mediation is a way to increase closeness with the children and avoid excessive use of gadgets. Thus, parents collaborate on active mediation, restriction mediation, and co-viewing mediation to regulate and manage their children's use of gadgets.

Abstract

Children, aged 0-8, possess remarkable intelligence and talent, yet these often go unrecognised, limiting their potential for success. Parents and teachers, who are primary observers of children, sometimes overlook these abilities, hindering their expected development. Educators must prioritise understanding children's development to uncover their hidden talents and potential. By doing so, educators can guide children towards realising their full potential, leading to a brighter future. This study focuses on identifying superior potential through multiple intelligences mapping in early childhood, conducted at RA Bani Malik, Ledug. Utilising qualitative field research, data is collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that each child has unique potentials, which can be identified and stimulated through various activities such as puzzle-solving for logical-mathematical intelligence, writing letters for language intelligence, dancing for musical intelligence, gymnastics for kinesthetic intelligence, caring for plants for naturalist intelligence, self-questioning activities for intrapersonal intelligence, role-playing for interpersonal intelligence, and painting for spatial intelligence.

Abstract

The existence of pamali in Sundanese society today is often only seen as a myth as a way for parents to frighten their children, even though behind it lies various educational values related to cause and effect. Several studies related to pamali focus more on children aged over 6 years, while the educational values of pamali in Sundanese society for early childhood are still relatively rare. Through this literature review, the researcher then tries to identify pamali educational values that are still developing in Sundanese society today with educational values and character values that have been formulated by the Curriculum Center of the Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of National Education. It is hoped that with this research, pamali can be an alternative to local wisdom-based education that can be implemented in early childhood.

Abstract

Curriculum is a tool for achieving educational goals. Changes to a curriculum cannot be avoided. The prototype is a new curriculum issued by the government for the improvement of learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A lack of understanding of the benefits of traditional games makes the researchers explore how to develop a prototype curriculum based on local wisdom and physical motor skills through the use of traditional skipping rope games in early childhood. Thus, this reason becomes an essential aim of this research. This study uses a qualitative approach, and the research method used is Design-Based Research (DBR). Research instruments are researchers and participants. The steps involved in data analysis in this study are data reduction (organizing data), data display (making detailed descriptions), and conclusion drawing/verification (interpretation and conclusion). The expected result of this study is that it can assist the curriculum development process through the traditional game activity of skipping rope.

Abstract

Lullabies are a phenomenon that is both local and universal across the globe. Despite their deep local roots, lullabies exist in nearly all cultures worldwide. The Minangkabau society in West Sumatra, Indonesia, have a traditional lullaby practice known as manjujai. However, this tradition is gradually eroding and beginning to fade due to the influence of technology and modernization. Beyond its primary role as a lullaby to lull children to sleep, manjujai also functions as a medium for conveying messages, especially cultural and religious values, intended to be embedded in children’s minds. This study aims to describe, reveal, and analyze the meanings and functions of manjujai as a cultural expression of the Minangkabau community, while connecting its universal values to lullabies in other cultures worldwide. This study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, with data collected through an analysis of manjujai texts. The findings reveal that manjujai texts serve three social functions: (1) expressing feelings, thoughts, and life attitudes; (2) teaching cultural values through advice, messages, and hopes; (3) presenting linguistic beauty, comfort, tranquility, and well-being for the listening child, The shared essence of lullabies worldwide lies in their expressions of love, gentleness, and care. Many lullabies possess a peaceful, hyponic quality. Fatigue, the darkening night, difficulties in falling asleep, and the act of sleeping itself are universal elements that inspire the melodic and lyrical threads of lullabies worldwide.
