Abstract

Improving Teacher Communication Skills through Personality Variables and Perceptions of the Social Environment. This study aims to comprehensively understand the influence of perceptions of personality and social environment on the communication skills of high school teachers. The research approach is quantitative with a survey method. The total sample is 209 teachers as a sample of 439 teacher population in Central Java Province, Indonesia by simple random sampling method. Data analysis used prerequisite analysis test and inferential statistics with path analysis. Analysis and interpretation of the data shows that an increase in the dominant type of flexibility of the teacher's personality improves the teacher's communication skills. The increased similarity of perceptions of the teacher's social environment results in an increase in the teacher's communication skills. Increasing the dominant type of teacher personality flexibility results in an increase in the similarity of perceptions of the teacher's social environment. Conclusion: improving teacher communication skills can be through personality flexibility and perception of the social environment. Keywords: communication skills, personality, social environment, path analysis, high school.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202353

Abstract

Assessing Pre-service Mathematics Education Teachers Deductive Reasoning via Proof Writing in Basic Geometry: The Power of SOLO Taxonomy. Objectives: This study characterizes the developmental patterns of deductive reasoning via proof-writing of pre-service mathematics education teachers using the Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO) taxonomy. Methods: One hundred three pre-service teachers were given twelve items involving basic concepts of plane geometry to assess. An in-depth analysis of their proof was done and they were grouped through a two-step clustering technique. Findings: Four compatible levels of developmental pattern to the SOLO level were detected. At level 0, students do not know how to establish proof. At level 1, students provided a single or few valid idea/s. Students demonstrating level 2 thinking provided many true ideas. However, the proofs are unclear and illogical. Level 3 students' proof is precisely logical. Conclusion: A trend of difficulty and success characterizes their deductive reasoning and indicates that those who were not successful in a task have superficial conceptual geometry knowledge. The research concluded that the SOLO taxonomy is a precise framework for conceptual knowledge assessment and that knowledge indeed has structure. The use of the SOLO taxonomy for assessment activity is recommended. Keywords: assessment, deductive reasoning, proof writing, solo taxonomy.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i3.202307

Abstract

How Does Emotional Intelligence Affects Teachers’ Contextual Performance? A Path Analysis. Objectives: This study explores the effect of emotional intelligence on interpersonal communication and teachers’ contextual performance, and how interpersonal communication mediating emotional intelligence affects contextual performance. Methods: A questionnaire collected data through the survey methods toward 230 public elementary school teachers in Indonesia. Data analysis uses path analysis supported by descriptive statistics and correlational. Finding: The results show that emotional intelligence had a significant effect on teachers’ contextual performance, directly and indirectly, mediated by interpersonal communication. Conclusion: A new model regarding the effect of emotional intelligence on teachers’ contextual performance, mediated by interpersonal communication, was confirmed. Thus, the researchers and educational practitioners can discuss and adopt a new empirical model to improve teachers’ contextual performance through emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication in the future. Keyword: emotional intelligence, interpersonal communication, contextual performance, teacher.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i2.202222

Abstract

English Teachers’ Perception of Higher Order Thinking Skills Viewed from Importance and Complexity. Objectives: This study aims at exploring the Vocational High School English teachers’ perception of its importance as well as its complexity of teaching HOTS. Methods: A mix-method approach of data collection and analysis was applied in this study. The data were obtained from 40 VHS teachers, the members of the English teacher association of Wonosobo regency, Central Java, Indonesia by using one set of close-ended questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Findings: The result indicates 1) VHS English teachers have  a very high perception of the importance of teaching HOTS for their students; 2) a high perception of the complexity of applying HOTS resulted from the students’ unreadiness and teachers’ lack of competence in integrating HOT in English class. Conclusion: A very positive perception of the importance of teaching HOTS among VHS teachers. It is in constrast with the high perception of the complexity of applying HOTS. Training HOTS is needed for planning, implementing and assessing HOTS. Keywords: complexity, HOTS, importance, teachers’ perception, vocational high school.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i1.202220

Abstract

The Impact of Academic Supervision, Work Environment, and Principal Leadership on the Performance of Elementary School Teachers. Objective: The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the impact of academic supervision, work environment, and principal leadership on the performance of elementary school teachers in Lembang District, Pinrang Regency. The study's primary objective is to determine the degree to which these variables, both individually and collectively, influence the quality of teacher performance. Methods: This investigation employs a survey methodology in conjunction with a quantitative methodology. The population consists of 42 instructors from four public elementary schools in Lembang District: SDN 150, 152, 153, and 200 Pinrang. A proportional random sampling technique was employed to select a sample of 30 instructors. The research instrument is a questionnaire that has been extensively evaluated for its validity and reliability in order to assess the variables of academic supervision, teacher performance, work environment, and leadership. SPSS version 25 was employed to conduct data analysis through multiple linear regression. Findings: Regression analysis results demonstrated that teacher performance was substantially influenced by principal leadership, academic supervision, and the work environment (R² = 0.707). Academic supervision was the most significant variable influencing teacher performance (β = 0.619), with work environment (β = 0.345) and principal leadership (β = 0.173) following in that order. The regression assumptions, including absence of multicollinearity, linearity, and normality, were satisfied by all variables. Conclusion: This investigation affirms that the quality of principal leadership, the establishment of a supportive work environment, and the implementation of appropriate academic supervision significantly impact teacher performance enhancement. This finding suggests that it is necessary to enhance the quality of basic education by bolstering the capacity of principals, work environment management strategies, and supervision systems. Keywords: principal leadership, work environment, academic supervision.
