Abstract

Slum areas in major cities often reflect policy failures and a lack of political will. This study aims to examine the revitalization of the Karang Mumus area in Samarinda through a vertical land consolidation approach (KTV). The research employs a qualitative method, utilizing observations and literature studies from secondary data and field reviews. Findings indicate that the Karang Mumus area covers 8.72 hectares and has been prioritized for intervention through a collaborative funding scheme. Location scoring analysis, based on key and supporting factors, shows that the readiness of potential new locations ranges from 50% to 75%. The implications of these findings suggest that the implementation of KTV requires significant efforts and support from various stakeholders to improve slum settlements into more livable, clean, orderly, safe, and healthy environments. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers in planning and prioritizing slum revitalization in major cities.

Abstract

As one of the educational institutions, pesantren have significant potential to contribute to sustainable development, both within the local context where they operate and in the broader environment. The aim of this study is to measure the sustainability index of pesantren and develop a typology based on space utilization characteristics to generate improvement recommendations that will enhance the sustainability index. The researcher formulated the sustainability index concept based on three parameters: the proportion of low-albedo roofs (white roofs), the proportion of trees (green space), and the proportion of water bodies (blue space) relative to the total land area. Additionally, data was collected on areas of buildings with non-white roofs (orange space) and open land areas (gray space). Dimensional data for the five parameters were obtained using Google Earth satellite images for 46 pesantren members of the Ecopesantren program, located across Sumatra and Java. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using the Wald method to categorize the pesantren and recommend strategies for enhancing their sustainability index. The analysis revealed that none of the pesantren had a sustainability index above 50%, primarily due to the limited use of white roofs and blue spaces. Five distinct clusters were identified: developed pesantren, pesantren toward development, pesantren with space competition, green pesantren, and compact pesantren. Specific recommendations for improving sustainability were proposed for each cluster type.

Abstract

The implementation of therapeutic architectural elements within therapy rooms must be conducted appropriately, necessitating thorough evaluation to ensure alignment with established design standards and recommended criteria. The key architectural elements observed in this study include openings, color schemes, natural lighting, and material selection. The objective of this research is to examine the characteristics of therapeutic architectural elements at the National Narcotics Board (BNN) Lido, recognized as one of the largest rehabilitation centers in Indonesia. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through direct observation in rehabilitation therapy spaces. The aim is to describe the existing conditions of therapeutic architectural elements applied in both counseling rooms and group therapy rooms. Findings indicate that, in general, the therapeutic architectural elements in counseling rooms do not fully comply with several recommended design standards. For instance, the dimensions of window openings, indoor temperature, and levels of natural light illumination fall short of the prescribed benchmarks. Conversely, the therapeutic architectural elements in group therapy rooms largely conform to the recommended design standards and criteria.

Abstract

Rumah tuo is a traditional house of the Lembak Tribe in Tanjung Agung, Bengkulu City, which reflects local identity and values through its architectural characteristics. Rumah tuo has undergone changes in several aspects. This study uses a qualitative method with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis refers to three aspects: spatial systems, physical systems, and model systems. The results of the study show that there are various patterns of change in the tuo house. In the spatial aspect, there is an addition of a business area, an addition of a bedroom with a modified space, and a bathroom in the house. In the physical aspect, the house which originally used traditional materials such as wood and pelupuh has switched to using more modern materials such as concrete. In the stylistic aspect, although there is an addition of a new form to the facade, some houses still retain their original components. Overall, the additions that occur no longer refer to local elements and display new forms and materials. However, traditional elements such as old doors and windows are maintained, reflecting the community's efforts to maintain the original characteristics of rumah tuo Environmental factors, household and business activity needs, and the economy also influence change.

Abstract

Bullying is also called bullying, which is still one of the problems affecting children in Indonesia with serious impacts on both the perpetrators and the victims. Some of this happens to elementary school children, who should be at an age where they develop their emotional intelligence and empathy that can be influenced by their environment. To solve this problem, an approach consisting of various steps is needed. By prioritizing aspects such as sensory experience, architecture has the power to deeply influence emotions and behavior. This method does not only use punishment but also acts proactively to encourage better behavior. This study aims to find the influence of architecture in forming a child-friendly environment in terms of psychology. A case study at MI Khoirul Huda indicates that designing a learning environment that accommodates aspects of safety, comfort, and sensory stimulation makes a significant contribution to the formation of emotional intelligence in children. However, there are still several design elements that need to be optimized so that the quality of the space truly supports the process of psychological and emotional development of students as a whole. This study uses a qualitative method with primary data collected through observation techniques on the study object of the MI Khoirul Huda Education building. The results of this study indicate that architectural design can have a good or bad impact on the emotional intelligence of elementary school children.

Abstract

Adaptive reuse is a building transformation through a new function without eliminating its original form and historical value, and is a strategy for sustainable preservation of cultural heritage buildings. One example of sustainable heritage preservation in the Special Region of Yogyakarta is the Kotagede Museum, located in a heritage area and housed in the historic Kalang House. This study examines the implementation of adaptive reuse in Rumah Kalang, a heritage house located in the cultural heritage area of Kotagede, which now functions as the Kotagede Museum. A descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach was employed. The findings reveal that the transformation from a private residence to a museum has preserved the building's physical character, despite the addition of new structures at the rear and functional changes in some spaces. The implications of this study indicate that adaptive reuse not only maintains the continuity of historical values and revitalizes spatial function but also reinforces the identity of the Kotagede heritage area.

Abstract

The spatial atmosphere in the architectural realm is defined by Gernot Böhme as the quality perceived by the user of the space through sensory experience. This sensory experience serves as an indicator of the success of architectural design. However, the theory provided still needs to be studied through more empirical architectural planning cases. Through the evaluation of the performance of the Nur Andakara Mosque building, this study focuses on understanding the variables that form the atmosphere and its generators in the three atmospheric characters proposed by Böhme: impression of motion, synaesthesia, and social character. The relationship between the elements that form the space and the atmosphere that appears is studied to provide a complete picture of the performance of a building built with a certain design intensity. The results of this study identify the elements of the building planned into the three characters, along with their impact on the quality of the design, in terms of the impression of motion formed by the accessibility elements in the building. The use of materials and thermal control operations becomes synaesthetic characters. Processing the shape of both the exterior and interior into social characters. The results of this study contribute to the design strategy in similar design cases, enabling them to achieve the quality of the spatial atmosphere.
