Abstract

This study examines adaptive transformation in riverbank settlements along the Kapuas River in Pontianak, focusing on socioeconomic factors that influence community adaptation in Kampung Kamboja, Kampung Tambelan, and Kampung Beting. Using a quantitative explanatory approach, this study applies Correspondence Analysis to analyze the relationship between location and settlement adaptation characteristics. The findings show that dominant factors driving physical changes in housing include family expansion, the orientation of walkways (gertak), and building damage. Economic limitations and strong social bonds also play significant roles, alongside government policy support in riverbank areas aimed at promoting a tourist village program. The Correspondence Analysis method helps identify the most influential factors in a measurable and specific way, enhancing insights into varied adaptation patterns. This study contributes to the development of quantitative methods for understanding settlement adaptation dynamics while providing a foundation for sustainable riverbank area preservation and development planning

Abstract

In architectural education, the tools or media used to convey design ideas visually are usually sketch drawings. Architectural sketches have the aim of being an architect's initial representation and exploration to explain design concepts quickly and efficiently. In the depiction, there is a technique called shading technique. Generally, the most popular shading techniques are linear shading techniques and cross-hatching shading techniques. This research was conducted to explore the effectiveness of these two shading techniques in the architectural education curriculum in Indonesia. The method used is a qualitative approach with the respondents being students of the Architecture study program at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. Data processing uses thematic analysis techniques that identify the strengths and weaknesses of each shading technique. The categorized aspects consist of volume, depth and lighting. After processing the data, it was found that the cross-hatching shading technique was more effective in producing voluminous images with depth and realistic lighting effects. Although on the other hand, students find it difficult and spend a lot of time completing the cross-hatching shading technique. Research findings show that the selection of shading techniques in architectural education still needs to be done in stages. Curriculum development needs to systematically integrate learning of all shading techniques.

Abstract

Climate change and rapid urbanization have heightened the need for effective Urban Heat Island (UHI) mitigation strategies to foster sustainable urban development. This study examines public perceptions of UHI and the physical-spatial characteristics of cities affected by it, an area that has not been extensively explored in relation to demographic factors. Using an open questionnaire survey, demographic data, awareness, and community responses to UHI from 119 respondents were analyzed qualitatively with a Grounded Theory approach, employing open coding techniques. The objective of this study is to identify patterns of relationships between demographic factors, public perceptions, and knowledge regarding UHI. The findings revealed that 31% of respondents identified insufficient vegetation as the primary cause of UHI, followed by high building density (30%) and fossil fuel-based activities (17%). Education level was found to significantly influence awareness, with individuals holding a master's degree (S2) exhibiting 19% higher awareness compared to those with a bachelor's degree (S1). Public perceptions were also influenced by geographical distribution, with 68% of respondents residing in Bandung. The study also identified nine key physical-spatial characteristics associated with UHI, including limited vegetation, air pollution, and inadequate shading. Three major challenges were identified: insufficient public education on UHI, weak communication between researchers and policymakers, and limited implementation of data-driven mitigation strategies at the municipal level. The conclusions drawn from this study provide valuable insights for developing more inclusive, data-driven policies and emphasize the importance of community involvement in designing cities that are resilient to climate change and the impacts of UHI.

Abstract

The transformation of local culture in urban environments has become a challenge that continues to grow along with modernization. Cultural preservation is not only limited to maintaining the existence of existing urban heritage, but can also be realized through the design of new facilities as cultural development centers. One aspect of culture that has decreased is the habit of reading and appreciation of fine arts. Palembang City, as the capital city of South Sumatra Province, faces the challenge of increasing the level of literacy and art awareness which is still relatively low. Therefore, a literacy and art development center is needed, in the form of a public library and art gallery, which can be a means to increase public appreciation of local artworks and revive interest in reading culture as part of the city's cultural identity. The method used in this writing is a descriptive method by describing the existing conditions of the study object with contextual analys and identifying the concept and application of regionalism related to design needs. With an effort to create an expression of local culture packaged in modern technology and in harmony with the regionalism architecture approach. The output is expected to increase people's knowledge, provide easy access for people to enjoy library collections and works of art, and preserve the culture of Palembang city with an architectural approach.

Abstract

The government provides subsidized single-story housing for low and middle-income communities. However, these houses often undergo major renovations due to residents is comfort with the housing quality. Buildings that adopt a passive design approach have the potential to enhance comfort and environmental friendliness as a sustainable and future oriented investment. Therefore, passive design is essential for achieving sustainable renovations of subsidized housing. This study focuses on three subsidized housing projects in Medan City. The research employs qualitative and quantitative approaches, collecting data through three stages: literature review, expert interviews, and field observations, including questionnaire distribution to residents of single-story subsidized housing in Medan. A Likert scale is used to assess residents needs, while a ranking system prioritizes the most efficient passive design factors for renovation. The study identifies five key passive design factors that can optimize subsidized housing: vegetation, materials, ventilation, shading, and interior layout. The findings serve as a guideline for homeowners, developers, and policymakers to construct or renovate more sustainable subsidized single-story housing.

Abstract

Kampo Laea Hukaea is the indigenous territory of the Moronene tribe, one of the native tribes of Southeast Sulawesi Province. Within this area, there are traditional buildings of the Moronene tribe that have not been studied, and their quality has been deteriorating according to the local community. This threatens the authenticity and identity of the Moronene tribe. This research aims to identify the spatial structure formation system of the Moronene people's houses in Kampo Laea Hukaea. Using a descriptive qualitative method, with direct field observation and in-depth interviews, data was collected and analyzed through triangulation. The research findings reveal that the Moronene people's houses have a spatial structure divided both horizontally and vertically. Horizontally, there are the patande space (included in laica irai or front house), botono space (the core of the house), and the dapura space (included in laica ibungku or back house). Vertically, there are the tonto space (lower section), botono space (middle section), and pea space (upper section). These spaces, both horizontally and vertically, are consistently found in the cases, thus forming the spatial structure system in the houses of the Moronene people, which is an authentic identity of the Moronene tribe's culture in Kampo Laea Hukaea. This study contributes to uncovering the identity of the traditional houses of the Moronene people, thereby enhancing the sense of responsibility toward preserving ancestral heritage and maintaining the Kampo Laea Hukaea environment.
