Abstract

Congestion is one of the city's problems that really disrupts travel activities. One of the worst traffic jams in Palembang City occurs in the u-turn area in front of the Morning and Sore Restaurant, Jalan Jenderal Basuki Rachmat in Kemuning District, Palembang City. This road experiences traffic problems which damage the city's image through the phenomenon of congestion in the area. The aim of this research is to contribute to solving urban problems related to urban transportation in the Basuki Rachmat Palembang area and also to lead to Palembang's local wisdom from a decorative side. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method, data sources from primary and secondary data. The data will be analyzed using a scientific approach, especially in the fields of architecture and urban planning. This research reveals that there are 6 factors that cause traffic jams on Jalan Basuki Rachmat Palembang, namely U-Turn, Jalan Rimba Kemuning, Jalan Rimba Kemuning 1, illegal road control officers, portals that suddenly block u-turns, and drivers' actions against the flow. Then, the image of the Jalan Basuki Rachmat corridor area is in the form of a district and is dominated by a shopping district for goods and services. The solution to combating congestion at U-turns is to plan horseshoe type flyover infrastructure.

Abstract

In the field of architecture, humans build buildings or structures to meet their needs, and as users of these buildings influence the way humans behave. As well as ensuring the variables that influence the correlation between architecture and the social stability of building occupants. The most fundamental aspect of architecture is understanding the importance of the interaction between these elements such as accessibility, open space and aesthetics. In the western city of Surabaya, a place has been built, making it a new historical milestone in realizing the people's wishes. For this reason, the design of the Grand Pakuwon Food Junction building must be able to be accepted and respond to user behavior, namely visitors, by creating space elements that foster social interaction, are easy to adapt, and offer indoor and outdoor facilities to its users, as well as giving them a variety of activities to choose from. The method used for qualitative description is interviews and identifying each factor to create the stability of desired behavior for residents and users. It is hoped that the results of this research can provide development of spatial logic theory (Hiller and Hanson) and humanistic principles and encourage building designs that are not only functional, but also pay attention to aspects of genetic attitudes and emotions.

Abstract

Columns are components or parts of a building that function as the main structure of the building. In some cases, building columns have also developed an aesthetic function that displays artistic value on the facade. Therefore, proper and thorough planning of the columns will highlight the unique character of the building. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of main columns and practical columns as structural and aesthetic elements in building design. The emphasis on the importance of column aesthetics is the novelty of this research. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method using a theoretical approach, a literature study, and field observation. The conclusion results show that building forming factors are elements that link the value of the shape and structure of the columns so that they become their own visual attraction. Therefore, architects must be careful when considering these elements to create synergy and harmony between structure and architecture.

Abstract

Five years after the 2018 Lombok earthquake, several temporary shelters and even emergency ones still exist and are being used by the community, despite the fact that the majority of them have relocated to permanent housing. In Dusun Boyotan, one extended family continues to utilize their post-earthquake dwellings, incorporating various functions related to building sustainability and cultural suitability. This research aims to present an up-to-date survey that identifies the stages of house development and explores how residents adapt to post-earthquake dwellings, as well as the reasons behind these changes. The research method employed in this study is a qualitative case study approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and a study of the resident's perceptions of their dwellings before and after the earthquake. The research findings indicate that the transition from emergency shelters to temporary housing involves the use of locally available materials and construction methods in the affected area. Furthermore, residents experienced an improvement in housing quality through the provision of permanent dwellings that adhere to national standards by the Indonesian government. The process of housing adaptation carried out by an extended family over four years involved behavioral adaptation and spatial adjustment in response to each housing stage and the use of new materials.

Abstract

The village of Labuhan Lalar is a village with the highest number of fishermen in West Sumbawa Regency. In 2015, the government initiated the construction of housing specifically for the fishermen community there. After being relocated to these fishermen's housing and living there for the past 8 years, it is necessary to reassess the extent to which the performance of this housing has impacted the lives of its residents. The post-occupancy evaluation in this study aims to assess the housing's performance in supporting the health of its occupants. This research employs a deductive quantitative approach. The evaluation in this study falls under the post-implementation evaluation phase (ex-post) conducted after the plan has been implemented. The results indicate that technical elements such as humidity, ventilation, noise, flooring, roofing, and walls of the housing did not perform well in supporting the health of the fishermen's housing residents, leading to a decline in health post-occupancy. This finding could serve as input for the development of new standards and regulations to better address health aspects in housing design and construction. This could influence potential occupants’ preferences before purchasing, renting, or building their own homes with a focus on health considerations.

Abstract

This study explores the architecture of Rumah Carahulu Komeryng, a form of vernacular house in South Sumatra Province. The Carahulu House not only functions as a place to live, but also as a center of social, cultural and religious life for the Komering Tribe community. This study uses a qualitative method with a semiotic approach to understand the meaning of the architectural elements of Rumah Carahulu in an Islamic perspective. The results of the study show that architectural elements such as the shape of the roof, space, main door, main window and ornaments have a deep symbolic meaning. The shape of the roof symbolizes the upper world as the ancestral residence and relationship with God. The separation of space between men and women reflects the principles of purity and honor in Islam. The main door facing the Qibla and decorated with Arabic calligraphy shows a spiritual orientation and openness to the teachings of Islam. The main window with Islamic ornaments depicts openness and transparency in religious life. Calligraphy ornaments and flora motifs contain profound moral and philosophical messages. This study concludes that the architecture of Rumah Carahulu Komering integrally incorporates Islamic values in its design and function, reflecting the life philosophy of the Komering community which adheres to the teachings of Islam.

Abstract

Bias toward visual elements in architecture often results in visually striking buildings that lack existential grounding and sincerity. This visual dominance makes us feel alienated within our own built environment. Therefore, an approach that considers all the senses is necessary to create a more human-centered environment. An architectural experience that engages all senses can evoke emotions that resonate with the human experience. Peter Zumthor, an architect renowned for his poetic works, emphasizes the importance of sensory perception in architecture. Zumthor’s sources of inspiration are reflected in his book Atmospheres: Architectural Environments, Surrounding Objects. Atmosphere, for Zumthor, answers questions regarding the intensity and mood of a space or architectural structure. He formulated this response into nine atmospheres. This study employs a qualitative approach with descriptive-analytical methods and aims to produce a design that enhances the spatial experience by applying Zumthor's atmosphere theory. A cultural museum is chosen as the design object, as the atmosphere is essential to ‘move’ users within it. The location in Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), with its tropical climate and contoured topography, influences the formulation of design criteria. The study’s results will provide atmospheric design criteria to create the ambiance of spaces in a Cultural Museum at IKN, which can then be developed into a design concept.

Abstract

Buildings in major Indonesian cities are projected to be dominated by vertical housing such as public housing, which is anticipated to make up most building stock. Buildings contribute to around 40% of global primary energy consumption and account for one-third of CO2 emissions, both of which can significantly impact global warming. One consequence of this is the rise in ambient temperatures, which drives the increased use of active cooling solutions like air conditioning (AC) to counter thermal discomfort caused by global warming. Post-COVID-19, the shift toward more indoor activities has further fuelled the demand for cooling. One solution to reduce this demand is through passive design, utilizing economical shading elements on the building envelope. Building facades—covering the front, sides, and rear—interact directly with the external environment, and this study focuses on the configuration of recessed balconies. The study uses simulation methods with software such as Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, employing the Honeybee and Ladybug plugins to run EnergyPlus simulations. Simulation results show that recessed U-shaped balconies improve cooling energy performance as their depth increases. This improvement is attributed to the higher conductivity of deeper walls at night. The use of recessed balcony types can reduce cooling energy for units with recessed balcony placements, without altering room layouts.

Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on the concept of minimalism as a design method and philosophy, far beyond the mere minimalist visual appearance commonly understood. This understanding responds to the trends in home design in Indonesia, where minimalism is often perceived as a design that emphasizes visual simplicity. However, the greatest potential of minimalism in modern architecture lies in the effort to simplify spatial design processes and methods with a reductive approach. This qualitative case study highlights the design of a simple residential house using the reduction approach. The connection between reduction and minimalism is reflected in various architectural design aspects, including reduction in building capacity, materiality, and design identity. The findings of this study propose the concept of reduction as a method closely related to various efficiency efforts. The ultimate goal is to expand the understanding of minimalism not merely as an aesthetic but as a reduction-based approach towards various aspects of sustainability in design.
