Abstract

This study analyses the use of figurative language in The Book 1 album lyrics by YOASOBI through a semantic approach. Figurative language, including metaphor, personification, simile, and hyperbole, is crucial in enhancing song lyrics' emotional depth and artistic expression. This research explores how these figurative elements contribute to meaning-making and emotional engagement in the songs. A qualitative descriptive-analytical method focused on semantic analysis of selected lyrics. The data consist of seven songs from the album The Book 1, which were analysed through document analysis to identify patterns of figurative language. Each instance of metaphor, personification, simile, and hyperbole was categorized based on its linguistic structure and contextual function within the lyrics. The findings reveal that metaphors in YOASOBI’s lyrics establish strong symbolic imagery by connecting abstract concepts with concrete objects. Personification is used to attribute human qualities to non-human entities, intensifying emotional resonance. Simile explicitly compares two distinct elements to clarify feelings, while hyperbole amplifies emotions to create dramatic effects. These devices collectively enrich the meaning of the lyrics, allowing listeners to experience a deeper emotional connection to the songs. The study concludes that YOASOBI’s use of figurative language enhances their music's aesthetic and emotive aspects, making their lyrics more impactful and immersive.

Abstract

Bahasa tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai alat komunikasi, tetapi juga mencerminkan nilai-nilai budaya masyarakat penuturnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan verba yang mencerminkan budaya dalam bahasa Jepang dan bahasa Jawa melalui pendekatan etnolinguistik. Fokus utama penelitian ini adalah bagaimana verba dalam kedua bahasa merefleksikan aspek sosial, hierarki, kepercayaan, dan nilai-nilai budaya masyarakat Jepang dan Jawa. Data dikumpulkan melalui studi pustaka dan korpus linguistik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam bahasa Jepang, verba sering kali mengalami perubahan bentuk sesuai dengan tingkat kesopanan (keigo), sedangkan dalam bahasa Jawa terdapat sistem unggah-ungguh yang membedakan penggunaan verba berdasarkan status sosial dan hubungan antarpenutur. Selain itu, ditemukan bahwa verba dalam kedua bahasa mencerminkan konsep budaya unik, seperti kerja keras dalam bahasa Jepang (verba hataraku) dan rasa syukur dalam bekerja dalam bahasa Jawa (nyambut gawe). Implikasi penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa perbedaan struktur dan makna verba dapat memberikan wawasan lebih dalam tentang hubungan bahasa dan budaya dalam kedua masyarakat tersebut.

Abstract

Vocaloid is not just a music production tool, but a pop culture phenomenon that combines technology, visual art, and fan creativity. The Vocaloid phenomenon began with the launch of Hatsune Miku in 2007 by Crypton Future Media in collaboration with Yamaha. Shortly thereafter, another character known as Mirror Image was released, namely Kagamine Rin and Len. The emergence of these two Vocaloids has revolutionized the Japanese music landscape. Through voice synthesis software, Vocaloid enables individuals to create music without the limitations of human vocalists. The Vocaloid fan community supports collaborative works, from songs to fan art, and hosts live holographic concerts that blur the lines between reality and fiction. This strengthens cross-border community bonds, making Vocaloid one of the most influential digital creative ecosystems of the 21st century. Therefore, the emergence of Miku and Mirror Image significantly influenced the development of popular culture at the time. However, in its development, Mirror Image has been inconsistent in improving its audio and visual quality, making it less popular today. Unlike Mirror Image, Miku has become an enduring symbol of the virtual idol in the “database” industry model, where fans continue to produce and shape their own narratives. This article analyzes the development of Vocaloid as popular culture and compares the character of Hatsune Miku with the character of Mirror Image as part of popular culture.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the structure and meaning of the verb oriru in Japanese, the structure and meaning of the verb turun in Indonesian, as well as to identify the similarities and differences between them. The data for this research were obtained from various online sources, such as linguistic corpora, Liputan6, Suara Merdeka Online, and others. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The observation method with note-taking technique was used for data collection. For data analysis, a contrastive technique was applied and the results were further classified. Based on the analysis, the verb oriru in Japanese is classified as an intransitive verb that can form part of a phrase and can conjugate to form compound verbs. The verb oriru has one core meaning and eight extended meanings. Meanwhile, the Indonesian verb turun is also an intransitive verb that can be used in phrases and conjugated into compound verbs. It has one core meaning and thirteen extended meanings. The similarities between oriru and turun are: (1) Both are intransitive verbs; (2) Both can be part of a phrase; (3) Both can conjugate and form compound verbs; (4) Three meanings of oriru and three meanings of turun share semantic equivalence. As for the differences, there are seventeen semantic distinctions between the two verbs.

Abstract

The use of gairaigo (外来語), or foreign loanwords, has become an increasingly prominent feature in the Japanese language, especially in institutional digital communication. This study investigated the translation strategies applied to gairaigo in the social media posts of the Japanese Consulate in Makassar from 2017 to 2024, employing Peter Newmark’s theory of translation procedures. The research aimed to reveal why gairaigo was frequently chosen over native Japanese vocabulary (wago and kango) in official digital communication and how this choice reflected the evolving needs of digital public diplomacy. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzed seven representative Indonesian–Japanese text pairs selected from 130 social media posts after filtering for repetition. The analysis identified the use of multiple translation procedures, including naturalization, transference, transposition, descriptive equivalence, reduction, and free translation. These strategies demonstrated a deliberate adaptation to the stylistic demands of social media, such as informality, brevity, and accessibility for younger audiences. The findings showed that the use of gairaigo in institutional digital diplomacy served not only linguistic but also communicative and cultural functions, shaping both the institutional voice and cross-cultural understanding. This study contributed to translation studies by highlighting the interplay between lexical choice, digital institutional communication, and the pragmatic demands of public diplomacy in a globalized context.

Abstract

The Japanese studies field has significantly expanded globally, encompassing diverse themes from traditional cultural aspects to contemporary issues such as globalization and international relations. In Indonesia, Japanese studies play a pivotal role in fostering academic and cultural ties with Japan. The growth of this field is evidenced by the increasing number of academic programs and publications focusing on Japanese language, literature, and culture. Currently, Indonesia hosts 27 Japanese studies journals, which serve as key platforms for disseminating research and strengthening academic engagement. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach to map and analyze the development of these journals. It identifies key challenges such as meeting national accreditation standards set by SINTA, ensuring consistent publication quality, and addressing operational sustainability. Other notable issues include article processing charges (APCs) and the need for alignment with international publication norms. Despite these challenges, integrating Japanese cultural philosophy into journal names and designs demonstrates a strong commitment to the field’s identity. In addition, mandatory publication requirements for faculty members and collaborations with academic associations such as ASJI, ASPBJI, and KPSJI provide critical opportunities for these journals to develop further. Rather than merely offering a general overview, this study presents specific insights into the conditions and trajectories of Japanese studies journals in Indonesia, shedding light on their role in strengthening Indonesia’s contribution to global Japanese studies scholarship.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the personality dynamics and character development of the main character, Olivia in the manga Totsuzen Papa Ni Natta Saikyou Doragon No Kosodate Nikki. The study adopts a literary psychology paradigm and employing a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was conducted through document analysis, using content analysis techniques grounded in Sigmund Freud's personality dynamics theory. The analysis reveals Olivia's evolving personality beginning with her life instincts driven by survival and emotional needs. Her anxieties are primarily realistic and neurotic, indicating a dependence on temporary defense mechanisms. Ultimately, Olivia integrates her innate personality traits (given) with self-developed characteristics (willed), reflecting her dynamic personal growth.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the educational ideologies of two figures: Yoshida Shouin, a historical figure from Japan’s Edo period, and Yoshida Shouyou, a fictional character from the anime Gintama. The research focuses on the ideologies and actions of both Yoshida Shouin and Yoshida Shouyou. The data are presented descriptively based on Sugiyono’s theoretical framework (2019) and further analyzed through the comparative lens of Winarno’s theory (as cited in Hasbi, 2013:6). The study concentrates on the field of education, as both Yoshida Shouin in historical context and Yoshida Shouyou in literary representation are depicted as influential educators to their students at Shouka Sonjuku. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, analyzing a total of 10 data points. The findings on Yoshida Shouin’s educational ideology reveal the following: essentialism (3 occurrences), conservatism (2), progressivism (3), and liberalism (2). Meanwhile, Yoshida Shouyou is characterized by the following ideological tendencies: essentialism (4 occurrences), conservatism (2), progressivism (2), and liberalism (2). Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the two figures differ in terms of their foundational educational ideologies. Yoshida Shouin tends to align with essentialist and progressivist ideologies, whereas Yoshida Shouyou demonstrates a stronger inclination toward essentialist principles.

Abstract

This article examines online reader reception of Dazai Osamu’s novel Ningen Shikkaku using Hans Robert Jauss’s literary reception theory. The study focuses on readers’ responses to the novel’s intrinsic elements such as theme, character, plot, setting, and language style as reflected in reviews posted on Amazon, Goodreads, and LibraryThing. This qualitative research employs content analysis and data interpretation based on Jauss’s concepts of horizon of expectations, aesthetic distance, historical reception, and aesthetic experience. The findings reveal that readers respond to Yozo’s narrative affectively and reflectively, interpreting it both as a portrayal of individual alienation in postwar Japanese society and as an expression of existential struggle that transcends cultural boundaries. The novel’s fragmented plot, brutally honest yet poetic language, and historical Japanese setting emerge as key elements shaping reader perception. This study affirms that literary reception is not determined solely by the text, but also by the interaction between the act of reading, cultural background, and the aesthetic expectations of contemporary readers. As such, the research contributes to the broader discourse on modern Japanese literature from the perspective of global readership.

Abstract

This study explores the semiotic representation of leadership embodied by the main character in the first season of the anime “Dr. Stone” directed by Shinya Iino. Utilizing Peirce’s semiotic theory, the research analyzes key scenes to uncover how visual and verbal signs construct the image of leadership within the context of Japanese popular culture. Data were collected through purposive sampling of selected episodes, focusing on narrative and character interactions that depict leadership values. The findings reveal that Senku Ishigami’s leadership is represented through specific icons, indexes, and symbols—such as scientific tools, gestures, and verbal affirmations—which collectively construct a unique leadership model that blends rationality, collectivism, and resilience. The study highlights how anime functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for transmitting contemporary leadership values. The implications of this research suggest a need for broader cultural studies on leadership narratives in Japanese media, providing new insights for educators and scholars in language and cultural studies.
