Abstract

Numerous studies, particularly in sphere material, have highlighted students' challenges in grasping the notion of geometry. Typically, the teacher only teaches the subject using the formula, omitting the notion altogether. Moreover, this study intends to create a hypothetical learning trajectory for the sphere material by incorporating the Syawalan tradition from Pekalongan into the learning process through the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education approach, or PMRI. The methodology employed is design research, divided into three stages: preliminary design, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. As a result, this study focuses exclusively on the outcomes of the design experiment process, namely the pilot experiment. Video recordings, photographs, observations, deep interviews, documentation, field memos, and student activity sheets were all used to collect and analyze data to improve HLT. The outcome of this study is a hypothetical learning trajectory for sphere material in the context of the Syawalan tradition. The student learning sequence comprises four series, which include observing an interactive video of the syawalan tradition context to characterize sphere elements, utilizing orange fruit to find the sphere's surface area, discovering the sphere's volume through the cylinder and magic seeds, and resolving sphere-related contextual problems. Additionally, the activities devised in this study can potentially develop students' interest and conception of sphere material in the ninth grade. Abstract

Low mathematical literacy is one of the causes of the lack of interest and motivation in learners. Mathematical literacy and realistic mathematical approaches have relevant characteristics. This research aims to develop memes as learning media with a realistic mathematical approach to develop mathematical literacy in elementary school students. The research consists of several steps, which are: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The methods used are descriptive, evaluative, and experimental with a pre- experimental design. The instruments used were expert validation questionnaires, student response questionnaires, teacher observation sheets, and evaluation assessments. The results obtained from material experts were 79% and 78% from media expert, both in the appropriate category. Assessments of mathematical content obtained the validation results from the material experts and media experts with scores of 79% and 78%; both belong to the decent category. In large-scale trials, the results of the student response questionnaire after learning obtained a score of 73% while the evaluation results obtained a score of 60%. The students' evaluation scores are evenly distributed from the lower limit of 25 to the upper limit of 95. Based on the results, it can be concluded that meme teaching media with a realistic mathematical approach develop students’ mathematical literacy even though it is not a high level.DOI: https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.3.15249.339-350

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze students' errors and misconceptions in solving Fundamental Mathematics problems. The research method used in this study was descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study consisted of 23 students who took the Fundamental Mathematics course at the Computer Education Study Program. The instrument used in this research was the Fundamental Mathematics Test. The research procedure consisted of three main stages, namely: (1) preparatory stage: learning activities were carried out in 7 meetings and the development of Fundamental Mathematics questions; (2) implementation: research subjects completed the Fundamental Mathematics Test as an effort to collect data; and (3) data analysis from students' answers to Fundamental Mathematics questions to describe student mistakes in solving Fundamental Mathematics problems. The results showed that many errors and misconceptions that occurred in each question were caused by errors in understanding and translating arithmetic symbols in solving Fundamental Mathematics problems, errors in drawing conclusions, and errors in making graphs and images. In addition, misconceptions occur when solving problems involving arithmetic symbols. Furthermore, the recommendation from this study is to develop a Fundamental Mathematics didactic design that is able to minimize student errors. DOI: https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.17.3.21128.313-324

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of the multiple representations approaches on students’ representation interpretation in learning calculus. Pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design of non-equivalent groups was used. Three intact groups of size 53, 57, and 54 students from Jigjiga and Kebri-Dehar Universities in Ethiopia participated in this study. The groups included a GeoGebra-supported multiple representations approach (MRT) from Jigjiga University, a multiple representation approach (MR), and a conventional approach (CG), both from Kebri Dehar University. Representation interpretation problem pretest and posttest were administered compiled from pre and calculus contents, respectively. Students’ performance on representation interpretation problems was assessed using rubric scores, and their interpretation techniques were labeled as local versus global and syntactic versus semantic. Results revealed no statistically significant mean difference among the three groups on representation interpretation from the posttest that was determined by one-way ANOVA ((F(2.161) = 2.232, P = .111 , Partial eta = .03). More students in each group demonstrated local and semantic interpretation than global and syntactic interpretation. After the treatment, many students from each group shifted towards the local and semantic interpretation. It is recommended that the study need to replicate other calculus contents with different participants to generalize the results of the study.DOI: https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.3.18291.351-372

Abstract

This research aims to describe the numeracy skills of eighth grade students in learning Cartesian coordinate system using the approach of realistic mathematics education in the Indonesian context, or PMRI, by using Palembang Light Rail Transit (LRT) context. This research is a descriptive qualitative research and the research participants were students who belonged to class 8 of secondary school (SMPN) 59 Palembang. Tests and interviews with students were the data collection techniques used, and the written examination comprised two questions designed to measure the students' proficiency in mathematics. From the analysis and discussion of the students' responses, it was found that there were 11 high ability students (39.29%), eight middle ability students (52.14%), and nine low ability students (32.14%). Interviews were conducted to clarify the responses of the students. The interviews revealed that the main cause of the students' difficulties was a lack of concentration while attempting to answer the numeracy test questions. It is concluded that the students of SMPN 59 Palembang demonstrated adequate numerical skills in solving the test problems related to the Cartesian coordinate system using the PMRI approach in the context of Palembang LRT. Abstract

Instruments are tool that used to collect research data. The instrument consists of two types, namely the main and supporting instruments. In this paper, we develop the supporting instruments which are used in qualitative research such as commognitive perspective. The instrument development aims to explore and reveal students' cognition in understanding derivative tasks that are valid and reliable. It means the instrument is needed in order to explore cognition and communication in an inseparable manner according to the theory used in this research. The two supporting instruments that developed in this study are the mathematical ability test (MAT) and the derivatives understanding task (TMT). Moreover, the developed MAT instrument is accompanied by source questions, grids and indicators. The MAT consists of 10 questions, and this was tested empirically in the category of valid and high reliability. Furthermore, TMT is developed as a reference for exploring student commognition. The TMT consists of 14 questions. The preparation and development of the instruments in this study are based on relevant theories and supported by empirical data. At the expert review step, validation is carried out in terms of content, construct and language by experts. Each step is tested for readability, then suggestions and comments are provided for improvement. The final results obtained show that the two supporting instruments (MAT and TMT) are feasible to use in exploring student commognition because these bring up keywords, visual mediators, endorsed narratives, and routines, as a commognition character. Abstract

This research aimed to develop a valid and practical electronic module that potentially affected the HOTS of grade 12 students during distance learning in Xaverius 1 High School, Palembang. This study employed the Alessi Trollip model orienting towards multimedia products consisting of three stages: planning, designing, and developing. The data collection techniques were validation sheet instruments, questionnaires, and tests. Meanwhile, the data analysis method were validation sheets and questionnaires through average scores and comments and test sheets through student work. The success criteria of this research were to obtain valid and practical geometry distance teaching materials with HOTS by considering experts’ and clients’ reviews. The expert validity revealed a score of 4.72 and was considered very valid. The questions’ score was 55.5% and was revised. Meanwhile, the questionnaire was categorized practical with a score of 79.3. The e-module potentially influenced HOTS exercises with an average score of 83.5 or very good. This research concludes that the developed e-module has valid and practical characteristics and can influence the HOTS thinking abilities to create and analyze. Abstract

Sam Poo Kong is one of Semarang's city cultural heritages. This historical structure features intriguing architecture as well as being a popular tourist destination. This study aims to explore Sam Poo Kong's building as a starting point in the geometric transformation course. Besides, the study method is descriptive in qualitative terms with the ethnography approach, namely the type of research to describe and acquire data as a whole, comprehensive, and in-depth. The result is an ethnomathematics exploration of Sam Poo Kong's historic buildings, representing mathematical concepts including reflection, translation, rotation, dilation, and cultural values. Based on implementation in transformation class, students can quickly grasp which Sam Poo Kong's building portrays transformation. Students can identify and describe the Sam Poo Kong building's transformation forms, which include: 1) reflection on the temple as a whole, ornaments, and Sam Poo Kong entrance gates; 2) translation on the statues, roofs, lanterns, and poles; 3) rotation on the bedug, reliefs, incense holders, lanterns, and anchors; and 4) dilatation of the inner and outer rooflines of the Sam Poo Kong building. Abstract

Understanding mathematical concepts is a crucial skill for students to possess because it will make it easier for students to learn and master concepts in mathematics. This study aimed to describe the ability to understand mathematical concepts of junior high school students in solving integer arithmetic operations. This type of research was descriptive qualitative. The subjects in this study were seventh-grade students in one of the public junior high schools in Purworejo district in the 2020/2021 academic year with a good understanding. The technique of selecting the subject was purposive and snowball. The data analysis technique employed was the analysis technique of Miles & Huberman; data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicated that students' understanding of mathematical concepts in completing arithmetic operations were as follows; students could restate a concept in writing, students could provide examples and not examples of a concept they have learned, students could use and choose certain operations in solving mathematical problems, students could not present concepts in the form of mathematical representations in the form of pictures, students could not classify objects according to certain properties according to the concept, and students could not apply the concept algorithmically to problem-solving.DOI : https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.1.15324.29-44

Abstract

Textbooks used in schools today are available in both print and digital versions. The use of the digital version is not much different from the printed version, which is accessed page by page. The more technology develops, the more learning facilities and infrastructure are developed. Currently the availability of interactive technology that allows students and books to interact with each other. Interactive books can be designed to respond to student activities as a teacher responds to students. The purpose of this study was to develop interactive media on number material for class VII students with a drill and practice approach. The content of teaching materials has wetland content, including information on fruits, fish and handicrafts. This interactive media was developed using HTML, CSS, Javascript, Scratch, Mathjax, JSON, and Firebase technologies. The learning approach uses the drill and practice method. This interactive media was tested to organize online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the results of the study, it was found that student learning outcomes showed the overall average score was above the KKM of the subjects, namely the average value of learning outcomes was 75.80 from the KKM of 75.00. The results of teacher and student responses showed a positive response to the developed interactive media.DOI : https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.1.14153.45-56
