Abstract

Abstract

This study explored the semantic components of presupposition, speech, and phrase in Guy de Maupassant's short story "The Necklace. " The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method to identify instances of sentences that highlight the distinction between structure (sentences) and actual speech acts (utterances), and to examine the kinds of presuppositions that may be drawn from pragmatic theory. The findings show that various sentences in storytelling and dialogue express different concepts depending on the circumstances and setting. In addition, a wide range of assumptions were found, including lexical, empirical, and existential. The relationship between the language structure of narrative works and their meaning is further understood via this study.

Abstract

This research examines semantic and pragmatic considerations in analyzing sentences, utterances, and presumptions in The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using the models developed by Kreidler (2002) and Yule (1996) to methodically find and classify different linguistic components in the novel. Deliberately chosen passages were used to represent a wide range of language use. The study demonstrates how various sentence types, utterances, and presuppositions work together subtly to enhance the novel's thematic richness and narrative framework. The results emphasize the significance of linguistic analysis in revealing the layers of meaning embedded in literary works, enhancing our understanding of semantics and pragmatics in literary discourse.

Abstract

This analysis reveals that Dickens’ A Child’s Dream of a Star employs a rich mix of sentence types and pragmatic cues to convey its themes. The literal meaning of each sentence (semantic content) is often clear, but the full meaning arises only when utterance context and presuppositions are taken into account. Declarative sentences ground the narrative, interrogatives express longing or speculation, and exclamations/imperatives heighten emotion. Presuppositions – the assumptions characters take for granted – shape how readers understand the familial and spiritual context. For instance, the repeated use of “Is my brother come?” presupposes a belief in life after death and familial reunion, driving the story’s emotional arc. The study underscores that even in a literary text, formal semantics and pragmatic theory are both needed to explain how meaning is constructed. By tabulating sentence, utterance, and presupposition features, we see the interplay between grammatical form and inferred content. These insights have implications for semantics research: they show that narrative language engages everyday presuppositions and speech-act conventions, and that analyzing such texts can illustrate how speakers use language creatively yet systematically. Further work could apply similar analyses to other literary works, or investigate reader interpretations of presupposed content.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of figurative language in the song “Berita Kepada Kawan” by Ebiet G. Ade, focusing on the widespread misinterpretation of its meaning by listeners. Many audiences perceive the song literally, overlooking the deep symbolic messages embedded in its lyrics. The purpose of this article is to reveal the figurative language used in the song and highlight how different individuals may interpret the same lyrics differently, often diverging from the songwriter’s intended message. Employing a qualitative research method, the study involved a participatory approach through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Forms to 26 respondents. The findings indicate a significant variation in interpretation among listeners, with a majority failing to grasp the figurative elements and underlying messages of the song. These results suggest that lyrical content, especially in poetic or symbolic forms, often requires contextual understanding to avoid misinterpretation. The study concludes that a lack of awareness regarding figurative language contributes to misunderstanding song lyrics, which may diminish the impact of the songwriter’s message. It recommends further research on public perception of figurative language in music and the role of educational tools in enhancing lyrical comprehension.

Abstract

This study examines bilingualism in children within the "Kimbab Family" YouTube channel from a sociolinguistic perspective. The increasing number of bilingual and multilingual individuals globally, as a direct consequence of globalization, highlights the complex cognitive, social, and cultural aspects of bilingualism. In bilingual families, language choices are often shaped by family language policies and social norms, reflecting a speaker's social identity and communication strategies. This research aims to describe and analyze the phenomenon of bilingualism in the Kimbab Family children, specifically identifying patterns of code-switching and code-mixing, and the social factors influencing their language choices. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study uses video content from the "Kimbab Family" YouTube channel as its primary data source, focusing on the verbal utterances of Suji, Yunji, and Jio that exhibit code-switching and code-mixing between Indonesian and Korean. Data collection involves observation, transcription, and systematic notation, while data analysis follows Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model, comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the children's bilingualism is manifested through code-switching, primarily triggered by changes in interlocutor, aligning with communication accommodation theory. Code-mixing, the more frequent phenomenon, is driven by lexical factors (e.g., Korean terms without direct Indonesian equivalents) and expressive factors, demonstrating that both languages function as a unified linguistic system for them. Additionally, the topic of conversation and pragmatic functions significantly influence language choice, reflecting a functional domain separation between the two languages and serving as markers of their hybrid identity.

Abstract

meaning in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Black Cat. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzed how language in the narrative especially through the narrator's expressions reveals deeper psychological and thematic meanings. Sentences in the story often carry layered meanings that go beyond literal interpretation, while utterances reflect the narrator’s unstable mental state and emotional contradictions. The study also identifies various presuppositions embedded in the text, which help uncover the narrator's assumptions and hidden guilt. The findings showed that Poe’s use of language invited readers to question the reliability of the narrator, and that semantic analysis enhances our understanding of the story’s dark, psychological depth. This research demonstrated that applying semantic theory to literary texts provided insight into character construction, narrative tension, and implied meaning

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of deixis in the lyrics of "The Black" by Imminence, focusing on types of deixis such as person, spatial, and temporal deixis. Deixis is a linguistic phenomenon that connects language to the context of an utterance, allowing meaning to be constructed based on the speaker’s position, the listener, time, and place. The findings show that person deixis is the most dominant type found in the song lyrics (78,13%), followed by spatial deixis ((9,38%), and temporal deixis (12,5%). The dominance of person deixis indicates that the lyrics emphasize emotional expression and the songwriter’s personal experiences. This study highlights the importance of deixis in revealing the relationship between linguistic context and meaning in musical art.
