Abstract

This study examines how Pixar’s animated short film For the Birds employs metaphorical behaviour and nonverbal idioms. Despite lacking spoken speech, the movie uses human emotions, physical gestures, and symbolic sequences to convey a story full of humour and social commentary. In the film, many little birds make fun of a bigger, clumsier-looking bird, only to encounter unexpected repercussions. This story, which is both quiet and expressive, provides a rare chance to examine idiomatic meanings that are expressed nonverbally. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to find and analyse several scenes that metaphorically illustrate well-known sayings like “don’t judge a book by its cover,” “patience is a virtue,” and “what goes around comes around.” The results demonstrate how action, gesture, and facial expression may all serve as visual languages that represent virtues like poetic justice, humility, and tolerance. These visual idioms improve the narrative by enabling viewers to deduce intricate meanings without using spoken words. Finally, by demonstrating how idioms can transcend language through metaphorical representation in multimodal texts, this study highlights the potency of visual narrative and advances the discipline of visual pragmatics

Abstract

Disleksia merupakan gangguan belajar spesifik yang memengaruhi kemampuan membaca dan menulis anak, sehingga memerlukan perhatian khusus dari lingkungan terdekat, terutama orang tua dan guru. Penelitian ini berupaya mengeksplorasi peran pola asuh orang tua serta strategi pembelajaran yang diterapkan guru dalam mendukung perkembangan anak dengan disleksia. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif, dengan teknik observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi di Say Montessori School, Aceh Besar. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 2 orang tua dan  3 guru di sekolah tujuan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa pola asuh demokratis memberikan dukungan emosional dan akademik yang membantu anak membangun rasa percaya diri dan keterampilan literasi. Guru yang menerapkan strategi berbasis audio dan pendekatan multisensori berhasil meningkatkan pemahaman materi. Sebaliknya, pola asuh otoriter dan permisif, serta tidak digunakannya pendekatan khusus oleh guru, cenderung menghambat proses belajar anak. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa kolaborasi antara orang tua dan guru sangat penting untuk menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang inklusif dan responsif bagi anak disleksia.

Abstract

This article explores the roles and relationships between sentences, utterances, and presuppositions in creating meaning in the film Moana (2016). Using a qualitative semantic analysis approach,the study examines a selection of dialogues to reveal how these three linguistic elements interact with each other. The analysis indicates that the structural and functional differences between sentences (as grammatical forms), utterances (as actual contextual realizations), and presuppositions (as underlying meanings) are crucial for understanding the meaning intended by the speaker and interpreted by the listener. These findings underscore the importance of understanding these three concepts in the transition from semantics to pragmatics, particularly when analyzing meaning in audiovisual media, such as films.

Abstract

Explore the differences and relationships between sentences, utterances, and propositions within children’s literature by analyzing On the Farm by Enid Blyton from the Farm Series Collection (Egmont UK Limited, 2014). We use semantic analysis to examine how these linguistic constructions function in narrative discourse. Sentences are analyzed for their structural and descriptive roles, particularly in introducing characters, settings, and actions. Utterances are identified as spoken or written expressions in dialogue that reveal characters’ emotional reactions, questions, and exclamations. Propositions are statements conveying factual or verifiable information, regardless of their truth value. Through close reading of selected passages, we demonstrate that Blyton's text employs sentences to establish narrative coherence, utterances to convey the voices and emotions of characters, and propositions to provide information or opinions. This nuanced understanding of these linguistic units enriches the interpretation of both the form and content of children's stories. Moreover, these insights offer valuable contributions to teaching and semantic studies in the field of literature.

Abstract

This research describes and identifies narratives within the framework of the semantic structures of the book "Dear My Emotions" as narratives comprising sentences, utterances, and presuppositions. Employing descriptive qualitative techniques, the study analyzes samples from stories such as "Big Dreams," "The Mystery," "Beautiful Sadness," and "Sadness Love," totaling twenty data samples. The analysis reveals how diverse emotional expressions and the profundity of the narratives are intricately displayed through different syntactic and pragmatic forms, thereby enhancing communication and interaction with the readers. The work integrates semantics and discourse by showing how emotional aspects are related to the structural elements of a literary work

Abstract

Rachael Lippincott's 2019 short tale "Five Feet Apart" is examined in this study with an emphasis on the language, words, and premises used. His expressions are a tangible depiction of the phrases they contain, and the sentences themselves have a sound and comprehensive grammatical structure. The word "presupposition" refers to assumptions that are implicit in meaning. Understanding language structure, application in practical settings, and inferred meanings during communication encounters are the goals of this study. Semantics is analyzed using descriptive qualitative research methods. Based on the research results, determining semantic meaning requires an understanding of the differences between sentences and expressions, although presuppositions can reflect linguistic opinions or communication strategies. George Yule (1996) and Charles W. Kreidler (1998) are referenced for the discussed hypotheses.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the symbolism in Lana Del Rey’s song Salvatore in order to understand how visual and lyrical imagery constructs a narrative of escapism within the context of postmodern culture. The song presents various symbols such as “soft ice cream,” “limousines,” and “summer rain” that create an aesthetic, sensual, and fantastical world detached from reality. The method used in this study is Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis within a qualitative framework. The analysis involves identifying the denotative and connotative meanings of the key symbols in the lyrics, followed by examining the cultural myths constructed by these symbols in relation to escapism and feminine representation in popular culture. The results show that the symbols in Salvatore serve not only as representations of beauty or luxury but also as tools through which the narrator constructs an illusory escape. The symbol of “soft ice cream” signifies femininity that is soft yet commodified; “limousines” reflects false luxury under visual capitalism; while “summer rain” evokes emotional ambiguity. Thus, the song illustrates a construction of artificial reality, where escapism becomes a mode of feminine existence within a world dominated by imagery and simulation.

Abstract

This study examines the semantic relationships of hyponyms in Peter Brown's novel, The Wild Robot, focusing on how specific word choices contribute to meaning and categorization within the narrative. With a qualitative approach and based on the theories of Cruse (1986) and Lyons (1995), 20 hyponymic expressions were found in the novel. These expressions were then grouped into semantic fields, including animals, plants, technology, and residences. For example, the words "otter," "berries," and "solar panels" were analyzed for their hierarchical relationship to common words (hypernyms) through Cruse's "kind of" test. The results show that choosing specific vocabulary helps clarify meaning, strengthens worldbuilding, and deepens characterization. Primarily in children's literature, clarity and concreteness of meaning greatly assist the reader's understanding process. In addition to being a linguistic tool, hyponyms act as cognitive devices that help readers organize information in narratives. These findings suggest that the structure of hyponyms enriches themes such as identity, nature, and attachment, thereby enhancing the reading experience. This study contributes to the study of lexical semantics, especially in understanding the role of hyponymy in multimodal narrative texts.

Abstract

Program “Simbah Harjo” yang diluncurkan oleh Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) Beringharjo Ponorogo merupakan sebuah inovasi sosial yang menarik dalam konteks implementasi nilai-nilai ekonomi syariah secara praktis di tingkat akar rumput. Program ini tidak hanya hadir sebagai bentuk alternatif pembiayaan yang bebas dari praktik riba, tetapi juga sebagai model pemberdayaan ekonomi mikro yang berkelanjutan bagi pelaku Usaha Mikro, Kecil, dan Menengah (UMKM), khususnya yang berasal dari kalangan marjinal dan belum tersentuh oleh lembaga keuangan formal. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji secara mendalam peran strategis Public Relations (PR) dalam merancang, mengomunikasikan, dan mengelola citra serta dampak sosial dari program Simbah Harjo. Dalam praktiknya, PR BMT Beringharjo tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai jembatan komunikasi antara lembaga dan masyarakat, tetapi juga sebagai motor penggerak transformasi sosial berbasis nilai keislaman. Melalui pendekatan partisipatif, edukatif, dan spiritual, program ini mampu membangun literasi keuangan syariah, meningkatkan kapasitas usaha, serta memupuk semangat kemandirian di kalangan pelaku UMKM tradisional. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam dengan pengelola BMT, pelaku UMKM binaan, serta observasi langsung terhadap aktivitas program di lapangan. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif-interpretatif untuk menggali makna di balik praktik PR dan dampaknya terhadap pemberdayaan ekonomi masyarakat. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa efektivitas program ini sangat ditentukan oleh kemampuan PR dalam membangun narasi yang menyentuh, menjalin hubungan emosional yang kuat dengan masyarakat, serta menciptakan ruang dialog yang terbuka dan produktif antara lembaga dan komunitas.Keberhasilan program Simbah Harjo mencerminkan pentingnya sinergi antara prinsip ekonomi syariah dan strategi komunikasi publik yang empatik, adaptif, dan kontekstual. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini merekomendasikan penguatan kolaborasi antara institusi keuangan syariah, media, serta jaringan komunitas lokal, agar dampak sosial dan ekonomi program seperti ini dapat direplikasi dan diperluas di berbagai wilayah lain di Indonesia.

Abstract

Krisis moral generasi muda di era globalisasi, yang ditandai oleh individualisme dan materialisme, menjadikan pendidikan karakter sebagai isu sentral dalam pendidikan nasional. Keluarga memiliki peran krusial sebagai fondasi awal pembentukan karakter anak sesuai syariat Islam, dengan penanaman nilai-nilai Al-Qur’an dan Hadis, serta penerapan pendidikan profetik di era digital. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis dan mendeskripsikan urgensi peran pendidikan Islam berbasis keluarga dalam membentuk karakter anak serta mengidentifikasi strategi implementasinya di kehidupan modern. Studi kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi pustaka ini mengandalkan sumber sekunder dari buku dan jurnal ilmiah. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif-kualitatif melalui reduksi, penyajian, verifikasi, sintesis, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keluarga adalah lembaga esensial dalam menanamkan nilai-nilai moral dan spiritual melalui teladan, kebiasaan, serta bimbingan orang tua. Peran aktif orang tua dalam menerapkan nilai-nilai Al-Qur’an dan Hadis, didukung komunikasi yang baik dan pendekatan profetik, sangat memengaruhi pengembangan karakter Islami. Penguatan pendidikan Islam dalam keluarga bukan lagi pilihan, melainkan keharusan untuk menciptakan generasi berkarakter Islami yang mampu beradaptasi dengan tantangan zaman.
