Abstract

Reading is one of the skills that language learners must learn, in French. Lack of reading time has an impact on students' low interest in reading. This affects students' ability to read. For this reason, it is necessary to maintain and increase reading interest to achieve learning objectives, one of which is by providing electronic reading materials in the form of flipbooks. This study aims to describe the needs of teachers and students as well as produce electronic books in the form of flipbooks for French reading skills in Class XI SMA. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) level 1 method as proposed by Sugiyono. The stages of this research include data collection through questionnaires, product design, design validation, and design revision. Based on the results of the analysis of the needs of teachers and students, an initial product was made which was then assessed by the validator. Based on the input from the validators, a revised product (final product) was made in the form of an e-book in the form of a simple flipbook using the Microsoft PowerPoint application which contains reading material following the French syllabus of the SMA Class XI accompanied by practice questions.

Listening skills must be mastered first when learning French because by mastering these skills, students will be able to master other language skills. In the French Language Education study program at Universitas Negeri Semarang, one of the courses intended to help students master listening and speaking skills is the Français Orale Introductif. The teaching material used in this course is Tendances A1. It is not yet known whether this teaching material is suitable for the applicable curriculum. Therefore, this research aims to describe the results of the analysis of the suitability of the audio material in Tendances A1 with the semester learning plan for the Français Orale Introductif course. This research uses a qualitative approach with content analysis techniques. Tendances A1 contains nine audio and nine video materials that comply with the RPS of the Français Oral Introductif course. All nine audio materials meet Prastowo's selection criteria for audio teaching materials, while five of the nine video materials that correspond to the RPS for the Français Oral Introductif course meet Prastowo's selection criteria for video teaching materials. As for the themes of descriptions of cultural activities and culinary themes, there is no video or audio material in the Tendances A1 teaching materials that discuss these two themes. These two themes are listed in the semester learning plan for the Français Orale Introductif course.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of associating sentences and images to increase the French vocabulary of XII-grade students of SMA Kesatrian 1 Semarang. The method used in this study was “one group pre-test and post-test”. The respondents who participated in this study were 15 students from Class XII of SMA Kesatrian 1 Semarang. This research data collection technique uses testing methods in the form of pre-tests and post-tests. This study uses content validity and to determine reliability using the product moment correlation formula, before being used for research, this research instrument was tested on 5 students and obtained results of 0.9400 while the table r is 0.878 so we can say that the instrument is valid. The average pre-test score was 55, while the average post-test score was 79.2. Data were analyzed using a t-test. The calculation results show that the number of t > table t = 5.3341 > 1.761, with db 15-1:14 at the significance level ((α = 5% = 0.05)). Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted, which means that combined sentences and images can be used to increase the French vocabulary of XII-grade students of SMA Kesatrian 1 Semarang.

Abstract

This research draws on the needs of teachers and students for learning support, particularly in terms of unit 3 (living in a family) to increase the achievement of learning objectives. By researching and identifying potential problems, researchers found that students felt that the media provided for living in a family did not make a significant contribution to their understanding and that the media was less interesting to listen to, while teachers considered that the existing media materials did not clearly explain the detailed presentation of the family members. Therefore, adding learning materials will help students enrich themselves. To overcome this problem, this research aims to develop learning videos tailored to students' basic listening skills. This research uses 5 stages of research and development methods, namely (1) potential and problems, (2) data collection, (3) product design, (4) design validation, and (5) design review. Data collection in this research used a questionnaire method to analyze potential and existing problems. The result of this research is a listening comprehension skill learning video, created using the Plotagon application. The video consists of four videos adapting the lesson on unit 3 (living in a family) contained in the book Trends A1. After going through the validation and revision stages based on expert feedback, the video is ready to be used as a learning tool.

Abstract

Multimodal is a theory of communication and social semiotics. It allows us to analyze the message through linguistic and visual components. These are used to promote products to the public, called advertisements. The ad “Saint Maclou - J’ai vu un tuto” is a television advertisement combining interactions between spoken, written, and visual language. Therefore, this research has a complex meaning of linguistic and visual components so that it can be analyzed using multimodal. The Multimodal theory discussed in this research uses meta function by Halliday's theory of interpersonal meaning and the generic structure theory by Cheong. Based on the analysis, the results show that there are 15 sentences, which is a statement. The statement has an important role in providing linguistic information about the advertisement so that the message can be conveyed correctly; the generic structure consists of Lead, Display, Emblem (linguistic), Announcement, Emblem (nonlinguistic), Enhancer, and Call & Visit Information. There is an interaction between visual and linguistic components, and they complement each other, the application of learning this advertisement can be done by adjusting from level A1 to level C1 with different communicative objectives.

Abstract

French is one of the foreign languages studied by high school students. Based on data in Semarang, as of 2017, 14 schools applied French language learning, but in 2019, it was reduced to 10 schools. One of the reasons was the lack of student’s interest in learning French, thus forming unexpected attitudes. Based on this problem, I tried to find out how students behave when learning French. The research method of this study is descriptive quantitative. The object of this study is high school students in 10th and 11th grade. The research samples are 40 students taken from two schools, mainly SMA Semesta Semarang and SMA Negeri 8 Semarang. The questionnaire was used as the data collection method. The validity used is the validity construct and the reliability of this instrument with the alpha formula. The result shows that the attitude of students in high school towards French language learning was good. Based on the attitude component, the cognitive component had the highest yield at 35.8%, while the affective component was 32.7%, and the conative component was 31.5%. The cognitive component contains the knowledge and benefits of studying French in the future.
