Abstract

The Sinjab language is a local slang variety spoken in Batang that reflects the cultural and social identity, as well as the creativity, of the local community. However, it currently faces the risk of extinction due to a lack of documentation and intergenerational transmission. This study aims to identify how the Sinjab language is used in the daily routines of the Batang community and to analyze the semantic meanings of Sinjab vocabulary in Javanese. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using participatory observation, interviews, and documentation with active speakers of the Sinjab language. Data were obtained from primary sources through direct interaction within the community as well as from secondary sources such as YouTube videos and posts by local communities. The research findings indicate that the Sinjab language possesses a unique lexical structure through word-formation processes such as metathesis, phoneme addition, and borrowing elements from other languages. Sinjab vocabulary exhibits semantic relationships—such as synonymy, antonymy, metaphor, and idiomatic expressions—that are not found in Standard Javanese. Furthermore, observations reveal a significant decline in its use, which is now limited to specific social groups, such as punks or marginalized individuals. This study underscores that documenting and revitalizing the Sinjab language are essential to preserving the continuity of this nearly extinct regional cultural heritage.

Abstract

This stylistic study focuses on the form and function of simile motifs found in the Balai Pustaka edition of Babad Tanah Jawi, Volume 1. The primary emphasis is on recognizing the kinds of simile motifs employed and their artistic and rhetorical purposes. The method used was a qualitative descriptive approach, involving reading and recording data from the text, which was then analyzed using distribution and correspondence techniques related to the theory of simile as a figure of speech. The findings reveal that among the 54 analyzed data points, six prevalent simile motifs emerged: (1) depicting beauty, (2) signaling effects, (3) enhancing character, (4) visualizing objects, (5) conveying inner emotions, and (6) portraying chaos or scale. The prevailing simile language is lir, showcasing a conventional trend in Javanese classical literary analogies. Similes in the text serve as both artistic elements and tools that enhance meaning and create vivid imagery of characters and situations. This research validates the crucial function of similes in influencing the expressive and artistic strength of classical Javanese literature.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the importance of studying manuscripts as cultural heritage that convey moral educational values, especially regarding child-rearing patterns in the family. The object of the study was the Nadham Nasihat Manuscript by Muhammad Rasyid, which contains teachings or guidance on life, especially within the family sphere, written in the form of Nadham in Arabic Pegon script. An objective approach was used in this study, treating the text as a complete, autonomous work. Hermeneutic theory was used to interpret each author's intent and purpose according to Schleiermacher's hermeneutic concept, which was applied to analyze grammatical and psychological aspects and to interpret the advice in the verses of the Nadham Nasihat manuscript. The study found that the verses of advice in Nadham Nasihat reflect the author's views on child-rearing: parents must avoid being stingy and selfish, are obliged to teach manners to their children, and must marry off their children when they are old enough. This demonstrates that the verses in each piece of advice in the manuscript relate to the author's thoughts and express concern about the family's low moral order. The values in the manuscript are deemed relevant for parents in providing good parenting for their children in today's modern world.

Abstract

The Lengger Mask Dance during the Sedekah Bumi Ceremony in Kaliputih village is a sacred tradition rich in symbolic meaning and is still maintained amid modernization. This research aims to uncover the symbolic meanings in the songs, movements, makeup, and dance clothes of the Lengger Mask, and to explain how the community maintains its sustainability as a means of preserving local wisdom. This research uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach combined with an ethnopedagogical perspective, through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of traditional actors, traditional leaders, village officials, and communities. The data is analyzed using an interactive model through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that the symbols in the Lengger Mask Dance represent the cosmological relationship between humans, ancestors, nature, and God through the structure of the song, the variety of movements, and the performance's attributes. In addition, tradition is preserved through intergenerational inheritance, communal commitment, and the revitalization of cultural values in the practice of the Sedekah Bumi ritual. This study concludes that the symbolic meaning of the Lengger Mask Dance is the primary foundation for the sustainability of tradition and for strengthening cultural education in the community.

Abstract

This study is motivated by concerns regarding the erosion of character among the younger generation, resulting from the disconnect between formal education and local wisdom in the era of globalization. To address this issue, the study aims to identify and analyze the integration of ethnopedagogical elements into the narrative of *Serat Centhini*, thereby contributing to the theoretical understanding of culture-based learning models. Employing a qualitative method with a textual analysis approach and an ethnopedagogical theoretical framework, the text is examined in depth to explore its narrative structure and character dialogues. The findings reveal that *Serat Centhini* effectively integrates moral teachings, ethics, and local knowledge, manifesting them into eight traditional educational values: family, responsibility, spirituality/religion, social consciousness, discipline, resilience, honesty, and fighting spirit. Consequently, this study underscores the importance of reconstructing traditional literary works as a medium for character education that is both relevant and contextual for the current generation.

Abstract

Studies examining the personality structure of main characters in Javanese children's literature remain limited, particularly in revealing the psychological values embedded in children's stories. The study aims to analyze the main character’s personality in the wacan bocah Penulis Cilik and Nggawe Kebun Sayur by S. Wahyuni Adi, using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic approach, which encompasses three elements of personality: the id, the ego, and the superego. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, employing data collection techniques such as literature reviews and documentation. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The data used included dialogue, narration, and character actions. The study's findings indicate that the id element is evident in the characters’ desires, such as their aspirations and their need to achieve self-satisfaction. The ego element reflects the characters’ ability to adapt to social situations. The superego element is evident through the influence of values related to discipline, ethics, and social responsibility. These findings indicate that S. Wahyuni Adi’s work not only offers stories for entertainment but also explores complex psychological dynamics relevant to children’s literature research. This study contributes to the development of literary psychology studies, particularly regarding the formation of children’s characters in Javanese-language literature.

Abstract

Wayang Gagrak Porongan has experienced a period of decline due to limited performance spaces and a lack of generational succession among artists. Therefore, this study aims to document, preserve, and reveal the noble cultural identity embodied in Wayang Gagrak Porongan performances. This study use descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, performance documentation, and a synopsis of the story, Wahyu Catur Pujangga. The data were analyzed using William R. Bascom’s theory of folklore functions. The analysis involved selecting relevant data, presenting the findings in descriptive narratives and classification tables, and drawing conclusions verified through methodological triangulation. Research result: first, the projection function is reflected in societal expectations regarding the ability to lead oneself and in the projection of the community’s straightforward character. Second, the function of validating cultural institutions is manifested through the recognition of the Gagrak Porongan identity and the Taruna Budaya institution's involvement in organizing the performance. Third, the educational function is conveyed through the advice of the Punakawan characters, which promotes humility and mutual respect. Furthermore, the noble values identified include religious values, reflected in spiritual practices before and during the performance, and moral values, embodied in Cangkruk's culture as a medium for strengthening solidarity and kinship within the community.

Abstract

Bedhaya is a dance performed by female dancers within the royal palace environment. One of the Bedhaya dances preserved in the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is Bedhaya Mintaraga, the yasan dalem of Sri Sultan Hamengku Bawono Ka-10. Bedhaya Mintaraga conveys messages about the noble values a ksatria must possess, represented by Raden Arjuna during his ascetic period, titled Begawan Mintaraga. These messages are conveyed not only through dance movements but also through the Serat Pasindhen sung by the sindhen. In this context, A.Teeuw’s semiotic theory, particularly cultural codes, is used to examine how cultural codes in the Bedhaya Mintaraga represent and transmit life values through artistic symbols. The results of the study show that the cultural code in the Serat Pasindhen Bedhaya Mintaraga reflects the social practices in the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat environment, when the Serat Pasindhen Bedhaya Mintaraga includes the concept of babahan hawa sanga, forms of symbolic legitimization, representations of prayer, and the figure of Raden Arjuna, as well as life teachings that emphasize the principle of memayu hayuning Buwono. This research shows that the performing arts of the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat can be understood as a cultural text that serves to preserve philosophical teachings and strengthen cultural identities, both of which remain relevant to society.

Abstract

The film Janur Ireng contained conversational implicatures and maxim violations in the dialogue between the characters Sabdo and Intan, which were deliberately used to attract viewers to the story. This research aims to analyze the use of conversational implicatures and maxim violations in the utterances of the characters Sabdo and Intan Kuncoro to reveal the implied meaning behind the conflict. The approach used was a descriptive qualitative approach, using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Data in the form of characters' utterances that contained maxim violations were collected by listening to and taking notes on relevant dialogue in the film. The research results showed that all key utterances were special conversational implicatures whose meanings were highly dependent on the context of mystical revenge. Sabdo violated the maxims of relevance and manner through philosophical allusions as an instrument of intimidation and power, creating a mystical atmosphere. On the other hand, Intan violated the maxims of quantity and quality as a form of self-defense mechanism, a reflection of trauma, and a denial of the reality of the terror she experienced. This research concluded that the use of indirect language in this film set in Javanese culture was effective in building narrative tension while strengthening the portrayal of the characters as both perpetrators and victims of curses.

Abstract

This article discusses the transformation of the Ma Maulu’ tradition—a Maulid celebration of Prophet Muhammad with Bugis characteristics—into the To’dok Telok Manre Ka’dok festival on Kemujan Island, Karimunjawa, Central Java. The article aims to explain how this tradition functions as a medium for cultural preservation, collective identity formation, and the representation of maritime culture among the multi-ethnic community on Kemujan Island. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, this research is analyzed from the perspectives of Clifford Geertz's (1973) interpretive anthropology and Koentjaraningrat's (2009) acculturation theory. The results show that this festival is not only a religious celebration but also a space for the negotiation and reproduction of Bugis values, local Islamic spirituality, and maritime identity. The To’dok Telok (egg skewer) and Manre Ka’dok (eating together) symbols represent the balance between this world and the afterlife, social solidarity, and cross-ethnic cohesion amid the growing tourism in Karimunjawa. Based on these findings, we argue that To’dok Tello’ Manre Ka’dok has developed into a symbol of collective cultural transformation that goes beyond Bugis ethnic identity and has become a shared cultural heritage for the people of Kemujan Island, Karimunjawa.
