Abstract

Amid the identity crisis of modern humans due to the dominance of digital culture and globalization, the wayang kulit performance of Bima Suci by Ki Manteb Sudarsono presents a sustained philosophical reflection on the meaning of life, an epistemology of praxis, and spiritual transformation. This study aims to analyze the philosophical meaning contained in the play using qualitative methods and a systematic-reflective philosophical approach. Primary data derive from a video documentation of Ki Manteb’s performance on the Donkgedank YouTube channel (2018), supplemented by Javanese philosophical literature and relevant scholarship. The findings demonstrate that this performance highlights the teachings of Sangkan Paraning Dumadi (the origin and ultimate purpose of existence), an epistemology of praxis (knowledge gained through lived experience), and Bratasena’s transformation into a spiritually mature self. This philosophical message is particularly relevant for modern humans facing existential alienation in the digital era, suggesting that wayang kulit serves not merely as a spectacle but as a contemplative medium for rediscovering an authentic sense of self.

Abstract

The urgency of this research is to preserve and understand the manuscripts of the archipelago's heritage, which contain a wealth of historical, religious, and cultural values. This research aims to present a textological approach in examining the diversity of ancient manuscripts in Indonesia and their significance for the preservation of local cultural heritage. The research was conducted using qualitative methods, including literature studies that employed a textual approach, such as inventorying, manuscript description, classification, comparison, and textual criticism, to determine the original manuscript. The analysis focused on the structure, language, social context, and cultural values in each manuscript. The study's results reveal complex functions, with a predominance of Islamic elements, as evidenced by the use of Arabic and Arabic-Malay. In addition, contributions from local scripts and languages such as Old Javanese were also found, which reinforce the diversity of the archipelago's manuscripts. Linguistic diversity is a characteristic of the ancient manuscripts studied in this research, including those in Arabic, Javanese, Sundanese, Ulu, and Malay. The diversity of scripts and functions of manuscripts. The heterogeneity of scripts and functions of manuscripts requires the strengthening of textology, which is measured by uniform transliteration, editing notes, and computer collation so that the determination of the master manuscript is more effective and accurate. Thus, for preservation and utilization, prioritize risk-based conservation (including iron-ink manuscripts), digitize minor manuscripts to maintain a balanced collection, align data with the national registry through digitization, and use the results as open learning resources and to strengthen literacy

Abstract

The word “jancuk” is a form of speech often used in daily conversation, especially in the Arekan dialect spoken in some regions of East Java, such as Surabaya, Malang, and Lumajang. However, in the development of language, this speech is also adapted by non-Javanese speakers with various communication functions, such as in West Java, to be the origin of the Sundanese people, as well as outside the island of Java. This study aims to analyze “jancuk” as an expressive speech act, particularly in the sociolinguistic context of non-Javanese speaking communities. Using a sociopragmatic qualitative approach, this study examines the use of “jancuk” speech in social interactions and how it functions as an expression of emotions, solidarity, and group identity by identifying the instances of “jancuk” use. The results of the study showed that the expression “jancuk” experienced a shift in meaning when used by non-Javanese speakers, with a more flexible application in various communication situations.

Abstract

Tanduk is a series of activities carried out before the start of a traditional ceremony to bring blessings. This study uses an ethnolinguistic approach to examine the recitation of tanduk prayers as a verbal expression in the traditional ceremonies of the Sendangcoyo Village community, Lasem Subdistrict, Rembang Regency. The tanduk prayer is a conventional form of speech rich in spiritual, symbolic, and local cultural content. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The primary data consists of the text of the tanduk prayer obtained from local traditional figures, which was then analyzed using an ethnolinguistic approach. The study results indicate that the tanduk prayer has a distinctive linguistic structure, consisting of Javanese krama sentences with a repetitive style. The primary function of this prayer is as a medium for requesting safety and spiritual protection during traditional rituals. Additionally, the tanduk prayer contains local knowledge systems regarding life after death, spiritual hierarchy, and the relationship between humans, nature, and ancestors. Through this tanduk prayer, the community collectively builds awareness of the values of life that have been passed down through generations. Thus, the tanduk prayer is a religious practice and a living archive of the spirituality and cultural identity of the Sendangcoyo community.

Abstract

Literature and politics are an interesting combination. Not only as entertainment, but literature is also a means of critiquing societal issues. Desa Sajeroning Ombak is one of  Sela Istighfari's novels that describes the process of community politics in the village and the conflicts that arise during its implementation. Therefore, this study aims to identify (1) the forms of political conflict during village elections, and (2) the factors causing political conflict during village elections in the novel Desa Sajeroning Ombak. This study employs a mimetic approach and utilizes Ian Watt's literary sociology theory as its theoretical framework. The data collected includes characters, plot, and setting sourced from the novel Desa Sajeroning Ombak by Sela Istighfari. The analysis was conducted using hermeneutic techniques. The findings show that the village head election process in the novel Desa Sajeroning Ombak involves three forms of conflict: (1) conflict between individuals, between Pak Surya and Haidar; (2) conflict between groups, between traditional fishermen and industrial workers; and (3) conflict between the village government and the village community. In addition, the factors causing the conflicts are (1) competition, (2) differences in interests, (3) loss of public trust, and (4) natural disasters. In the implementation of the village head election, the conflicts that arise cause divisions within the community.

Abstract

Poverty is a complex social phenomenon that affects various aspects of people's lives, including its representation in literary works. This study aims to describe the portrait of poverty in Tamsir AS's novel Krikil-Krikil Pasisir using a sociological approach. This approach views literary works as a reflection of the social structure and dynamics of the society within which they live. This study uses Ian Watt's sociological theory of literature using semiotic reading techniques. Primary data was obtained from the narrative text in the novel, while secondary data came from supporting scientific references. This reading method enters the data analysis stage, and interpreting the data requires an understanding of social and cultural literary codes. The results show that poverty is represented as a structural reality that influences thought patterns, behavior, and relationships between characters. The unequal social relations between coastal communities and certain dominant ethnic groups give rise to resistance and latent conflict. The characters in the novel experience moral dilemmas that demonstrate the complexity of human values within limited situations. Thus, this novel not only conveys individual stories but also speaks to the social crisis of Indonesia's marginalized communities.

Abstract

The purpose of our research is: (1) to provide and add references related to the contrastive levels of speech in Javanese and Japanese, (2) to explain the differences in the levels of speech in Javanese and Japanese, (3) to introduce politeness to the younger generation through the use of good and correct language. The research method we used was a literature study by prioritizing the results of the analysis of a reference as a reference for the writing data from the research we conducted. The results of the study show that: 1) Javanese and Japanese both have levels of speech in their use as daily communication tools as a form and parameter of politeness. 2) Javanese recognizes the level of speech in Javanese which is divided into four language varieties, namely, Ngoko lugu (Nl), Ngoko alus (Na), Krama lugu (Kl) and Krama alus (Ka). The level of speech in Japanese is classified into three parts and is used by considering the age or social strata of the interlocutor, how close or familiar the speaker is with the interlocutor, and paying attention to Uchi and Soto. Keego is divided into three parts, namely, Sonkeego (Sk), Kenjoogo (Kj), Teeneego (Tn). 3) Speech levels are introduced and passed down through examples of everyday life and through learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and functions of phatic particles in Javanese as used in the film Tilik (2018), directed by Wahyu Agung Prasetyo. Phatic particles are linguistic elements that function to maintain social relationships and express the attitudes of both speakers and interlocutors. These particles reflect the values of politeness, familiarity, and social harmony as expressed in everyday speech. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach, drawing on Kridalaksana’s (2008) theory of phatic functions and Leech’s (1983) framework of practical functions. Data were obtained from Tilik's (2018) transcript and analyzed based on contextual and pragmatic meanings. The findings reveal seven types of phatic particles used by the characters, namely to/ta, lha ya, lho ya, kok, mbok, and je. Among them, to/ta and lho ya are the most frequently used, functioning to emphasize information and build mutual understanding. The particle kok expresses surprise or mild disagreement, while mbok is used to give advice or polite admonition. The particle je serves as a gentle marker of emphasis and social closeness. Overall, phatic particles play a crucial role in maintaining politeness, strengthening social solidarity, and representing the communicative, respectful, and harmonious character of Javanese society. This study affirms that language is not only a medium for conveying messages but also a vehicle for shaping cultural values and social identity.

Abstract

Serat Sastra Gendhing, a didactic Javanese literary source written by Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma, combines Sufi Islamic and indigenous Javanese spiritual thought. This research wishes to expose the psycho-sufistic values found in Serat Sastra Gendhing, and discuss their relation with transpersonal psychology. The research employs a qualitative method with an interpretive-hermeneutic approach through library research on three main manuscript versions. The analysis was conducted thematically on eight macapat poetic forms supported by psychological and Sufi theories. The results show that Serat Sastra Gendhing contains three central psycho-sufistic values: (1) existential awareness through sangkan paraning dumadi, which reflects the origin and purpose of human life; (2) self-control through aja dumeh and eling lan waspada; and (3) cosmic awareness through memayu hayuning bawana, which emphasizes harmony between humans, nature, and God. These three values represent the stages of spiritual consciousness development aligned with the concepts of self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-transcendence in transpersonal psychology. The study concludes that Serat Sastra Gendhing is a psycho-sufistic work that integratively unites Islamic spirituality, psychology, and Javanese culture.
