Abstract

Wayang has a closeness to the behavior and mindset of Javanese people. It is believed that there is a broad and deep philosophical thought system. The wayang performance, character, or nature of the wayang figures conveys the intellectual values of life. Each character comes from a reflection or representation of humans' attitude, character, and nature. Wayang Tauhid, the play Wedhare Sadat Tembayat, which is full of the delivery of philosophical values, is the object of this research. Based on the material object's characteristics, the study focuses on the metaphysical approach. How can humans reveal reality's most profound meaning through metaphysical studies and explanations. The purpose of this study and explanation is to open the way for humans to gain knowledge of the actual reality, namely the existence of Allah. This study is included in qualitative research in the realm of library research. Because the material object is philosophy, this study uses the hermeneutic philosophical method. The hermeneutic philosophical method provides a comprehensive and in-depth approach to studying philosophy. From a metaphysical perspective, the study's results indicate that the WST play has an existential orientation, suggesting that humans have material, emotional, and spiritual limitations. The WST play teaches humans to live based on the oneness of Allah, the True Being. Everything in the world is an event, as a being that does not exist, is only created by Allah, the True Being. This reminds humans that life in the world is only temporary and has limits, so life should not chase worldly things too much, but carry out human obligations to get closer to Allah through faithful prayer. This statement shows that the metaphysics of the WST play is monistic and spiritual.

Abstract

Sufism as a divine teaching is present in various Javanese literary works, one of which is Serat Mejang Dhateng Garwa R.P. 366.45, a macapat text that is part of the serat piwulang, containing the advice of a father to his daughter. Despite its didactic nature, this text is rich in Sufi values that guide women as active subjects toward the perfection of life and closeness to the Divine. This process of inner education aligns with the concept of suluk or the spiritual journey toward God, giving the text a spiritual didactic dimension. This study aims to understand how the father's advice to his daughter is conveyed, the strategies used, and how women are positioned as chosen figures. The research method used is qualitative with a Lacanian psychoanalytic approach to gender. The results show that in the text, the song serves as a medium for conveying messages; women are positioned as subjects who recognize their shortcomings to fulfill their spiritual needs. The title represents the symbolic relationship between the prologue (husband) and the content (wife). At the same time, the daughter as a subject relates directly to the mother and indirectly to the father. This text represents Sufi values and gender awareness within the aesthetics of macapat.

Abstract

This study aims to identify cognates based on form and meaning among Javanese, Sundanese, Cirebon, and Indramayu vocabularies and analyze their dialectal relationships. Using a list of one hundred Swadesh vocabulary items sourced from dictionaries of the four languages, the data were phonetically transcribed and compared to identify shared lexemes. Dialectometric analysis was then applied to quantify lexical distances and classify dialectal relationships. The findings show that the four languages share 28 cognates and exhibit varying degrees of linguistic proximity: Javanese and Cirebon show the closest relationship, while other pairs are classified as distinct dialects. While the study integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches and contributes insights into less-studied dialects such as Cirebon and Indramayu, it is limited by its reliance on secondary data and lack of fieldwork. Future research should incorporate direct elicitation from native speakers, phonological correspondence analysis, the etymological distinction between cognates and loanwords, and sociolinguistic and geographical mapping to deepen the understanding of dialectal variation in Java

Abstract

The connection between thuggery and power gives rise to a new face of politics laden with criminal hegemony. This concept is vividly depicted in the Javanese novel Lodan saka Segara Kidul (LSSK) by Kukuh S. Wibowo. Through a mystery-driven narrative, the novel exposes the transformation of Rahsana, a criminal gang leader, who changes his name to Hendarsa Prabancana and reinvents himself as a politician using slick yet effective hegemonic strategies. This research aims to reveal the representation of criminal hegemony in LSSK by Kukuh S. Wibowo through the lens of Gramsci’s theory, supported by other theories such as the normalization of crime, political oligarchy, self-image management, and more. The study employs a descriptive-qualitative method, emphasizing content analysis and literature review to examine novel narratives. This approach aims to identify forms of criminal hegemony, strategies for transitioning from crime to politics, and their societal impact. The findings demonstrate that Rahsana/Hendarsa utilizes wealth acquired through crime, money politics, and public image-building to gain legitimacy and maintain power. Hegemony does not manifest solely through physical domination but also through ideology that infiltrates social structures. These findings reflect how criminal practices can adapt within democratic systems and become part of legitimate political frameworks. This research contributes to enriching the study of Indonesian crime fiction while opening a critical discourse on the relationship between crime, politics, and the legitimization of power.

Abstract

Wayang kulit rose and became the prima donna through the play of the character Bagong by Ki Seno Nugroho on social media. This article aims to analyze the role and meaning of Bagong in the play of wayang kulit by Ki Seno Nugroho through a semiotic approach. Ki Seno Nugroho can bring the character of Bagong to life, not only playing a comedic role but also voicing social criticism and the values of people's wisdom. Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method examines data in the form of signs and meanings formed in dialogues, gestures, expressions, and scenes involving Bagong. This method consists of two levels, namely denotation (literal meaning) and connotation (cultural and ideological meaning). The semiotic approach was chosen because of its relevance in unraveling the layers of meaning of a cultural text to reveal deeper cultural and ideological implications as well. The data source was taken from the video documentation of Ki Seno Nugroho's performance on the Dalang Seno YouTube channel with the plays Bagong Ratu and Semar Mbangun Kayangan. The results of the analysis show that (1) Bagong plays a role as a representation of the common people, (2) Bagong serves as a medium of symbolic resistance to social inequality, and (3) Bagong serves as a communicative and entertaining conveyor of local wisdom. This study confirms the position of Punakawan as an important narrative device in the play of Javanese puppetry.
