Abstract

This study examines how prosodic patterns contribute to meaning construction and discourse organization in spoken academic English. Although prosody has been widely recognized as an important feature of spoken communication, its specific role in structuring academic arguments and guiding listener interpretation remains insufficiently explored. Using a qualitative discourse-analytic design supported by descriptive acoustic quantification, this study analysed 15 recordings of spoken academic English collected from one faculty at a university in Indonesia. The corpus consisted of 6 English-medium lectures, 6 academic seminar presentations, and 3 academic discussions, with a total duration of approximately 10 hours and 20 minutes involving 12 academic speakers. The unit of analysis was the academic discourse segment, and 248 segments were identified as having clear prosodic functions. Acoustic analysis using Praat was conducted to examine intonation, pitch movement, stress placement, intensity, pauses, and speech-rate variation. The findings show that rising intonation was mainly used to introduce new topics, claims, and subpoints, while falling intonation marked closure, conclusion, and certainty. Stress placement, increased intensity, pauses, pitch shifts, and speech-rate variation also supported emphasis, transition, argument structuring, and listener guidance. These findings indicate that prosody is not merely a pronunciation feature, but a discourse-level resource that shapes coherence, salience, and academic meaning-making.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed educational practices and created new opportunities for fostering critical thinking in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. As critical thinking is increasingly recognized as a key competency in twenty-first-century education, understanding the role of AI in supporting higher-order thinking skills has become an important area of research. However, existing studies remain fragmented across different educational contexts, language skills, and AI applications. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically review recent empirical research on the role of AI in fostering critical thinking in EFL learning. This study employed a qualitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design. Relevant studies were collected from major academic databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus-indexed journals, ScienceDirect, Taylor & Francis, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, and ERIC. Following predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, six peer-reviewed studies published between 2024 and 2026 were selected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The analysis focused on four themes: geographical distribution of studies, language skills investigated, critical thinking dimensions addressed, and the roles of AI in fostering critical thinking. The findings revealed that research on AI-assisted critical thinking is concentrated primarily in China, Oman, and Türkiye, with writing and reading being the most frequently investigated language skills. The studies demonstrated that AI supports various dimensions of critical thinking, particularly analysis, evaluation, inference, interpretation, and self-regulation. Furthermore, AI functions as a writing assistant, cognitive and dialogic partner, feedback provider, and pedagogical scaffold. However, critical thinking development depends not merely on AI accessibility but on ethical, reflective, and pedagogically guided implementation. The review concludes that AI has substantial potential to enhance critical thinking in EFL learning when supported by structured scaffolding, metacognitive guidance, and meaningful learner engagement.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the implementation of character education in an effort to improve the sense of responsibility among eighth-grade students at SIS Aljufri SMP Negeri 2 Dampal Selatan. This research was motivated by the discovery of various student behaviors that reflect low attitudes of responsibility, including tardiness in attending classes, lack of discipline in completing assignments, and minimal concern for school cleanliness and order. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a case study type of research. Data collections were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques, with the research subjects consisting of teachers and students of class VIII SIS Aljufri. The results of the research showed that character education at SMP Negeri 2 Dampal Selatan has been implemented through the integration of character values in learning activities, the cultivation of positive attitudes in the school environment, the example set by teachers, and the enforcement of school rules. The responsibility attitude of students has generally improved, particularly in the performance of tasks and participation in the learning process, although there are still some students who need continuous guidance. Factors supporting the improvement in responsibility attitude include the role of teachers as role models, the support of the school environment, and the existence of strict rules and sanctions. The inhibiting factors include differences in student character, limited learning time, and the influence of the environment outside of school. Therefore, character education has a strategic role in shaping students' attitudes of responsibility when it is implemented consistently and continuously.

Abstract

This research discusses the implications of various types of rewards for students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design through classroom observation, interviews, and documentations at SMP Negeri 3 Watampone. The subjects of the research were an English teacher and students from class VIII C and IX B. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result found that reward verbal and non-verbal such as praise, gesture, proximity and fun activity, strengthened students’ intrinsic motivation by improving their confidence reducing their anxiety, and encouraging long-term engagement in learning. Meanwhile, non-verbal rewards, such as objects and symbols were effective in stimulating extrinsic motivation by encouraging students’ participation and task completion. However, excessive dependence on rewards may shift students’ focus from the learning process to obtaining rewards. This research concludes that non-verbal rewards such as physical objects and symbols are effective primarily as short-term motivation triggers. In contrast, verbal and non-verbal rewards like praise, gestures, and proximity play a more significant role in maintaining students' intrinsic motivation and long-term engagement in EFL learning.
