Abstract

Soybean Detam 1 and Jati Belanda leaves are potential alternative medicines for treating dyslipidemia. The purpose of this study is to explore  the potential of the combination of Ethanolic Extract Soybean Detam 1 (EEKD) and Jati Belanda (EEJB) in lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides compared to single extract and Simvastatin. Using a real laboratory experimental method with CRD, a total of 36 male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups and administrated for treatment of 28 days. The results showed a significant decrease of LDL cholesterol as well as triglyceride in NC  as compared to P1, P2, P3 (p <0.05) and no significant difference with PC (p> 0.05). The highest suppression of LDL cholesterol between P1 with P2 and P3 is (p <0.05) while the triglyceride is between P1 and P2 (p <0.05). This study concludes that the combination of EEKD 10 mg, 20 mg EEJB, EEKD 30 mg and EEJB 30 mg is significantly lowering LDL cholesterol and triglyceride. The combination of EEKD 10 mg, 20 mg EEJB is the highest compression of LDL cholesterol and triglyceride, and has an equivalent effect with simvastatin in lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in male Wistar rats induced with high fat diet. Keywords: LDL cholesterol, triglycerides

Abstract

The number of cancer patient is increasing, while a really effective therapy has not yet been discovered. One concept of carcinogenesis is the relation between chronic inflammation and cancer. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has a carcinogenic effect in inflamed and malignant tissues. Red Fruit contains carotenoid that can suppress COX-2 gene expression and tocopherol, which is a potent inhibitor of  COX-2.  The purpose of this study is to determine cytotoxic activity of Red Fruit oil and its effect on COX-2 gene expression. The experiment used 5 dosages of Red Fruit, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 µg/mL, exposed to Raji cells. However, unexposed Raji cells were used as control. Cytotoxic activities were evaluated by MTT Assay, while Lethal Concentration50 (LC50) was determined through regression-correlation analysis. Red Fruit oil effect on COX-2 gene expression was evaluated by Reversed Transcriptase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) method and electrophoresis. Electrophoresis bands were analyzed by Scion Image for Windows. Optical Integrated Density (OID) of unexposed and exposed groups were statistically analyzed with one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan test with α=0.05. The results showed that Red Fruit had a cytotoxic activity on Raji cells with LC50 of331.42 µg/mL. Red Fruit suppressed COX-2 gene expression with an effective dosage obtained at 500 µg/mL.          Keywords: red fruit, cytotoxicity, cox-2 gene expression, raji cells

Abstract

Lymphadenopathy is enlarged lymph nodes caused by infection, inflammation or malignancy. On HIV positive patients, lymphadenopathy is one of the most common clinical manifestations and it is usually persistent. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is an effective cytology technique in determining the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy. This study aimed to describe the cytopathology of lymphadenopathy in HIV positive patients. This is a descriptive study of 21 cases of lymphadenopathy in patients with HIV positive who underwent FNAB examination in Anatomical Pathology Department of Dr.Hasan Sadikin Hospital between 2013-2014. Medical data was taken from the patient medical records including age, sex, location, size and cytopathological diagnosis. Cytopathology overview of FNAB specimens were reassessed by 2 pathologists. In this study, lymphadenopathy in HIV positive patients were mainly found in men (n = 15.71%) with an average age between 20-30 years. The most frequent location was the neck (n = 20.95.2%). The lymph nodes size were found between 0.5-3 cm. Most diagnosis was tuberculous lymphadenitis (n = 15.71%) with the most common cytology feature was granulomatous lymphadenitis (n = 5.33.3%) and suppurative lymphadenitis (n = 5.33.3%). FNAB examination in lymphadenopathy is very helpful to identify the cause of infection in HIV positive patients. Keywords: FNAB, HIV, lymphadenopathy, cytopathology

Abstract

Oat contains beta-glucan fiber and olive oil contains unsaturated fatty acids which havebeen proven to decrease blood cholesterol. This research compared the effect between acombination of oatmeal and olive oil and each food as single intake in decreasing total bloodcholesterol and LDL cholesterol. We used 25 rats (Rattus norvegicus L.), divided them into fivegroups; negative control (KN), positive control (KP), olive oil group (KMZ), oatmeal group(KBG), and combination group (KMZ+KBG). The total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterollevels were measured after 14 days of induction and after 28 days of treatment. Data wereanalyzed using one way ANOVA, continued with LSD test with α = 0.05. The result showedthere were 10.85%, 8.85% and 6.60% lower in total blood cholesterol level using KMZ+KBG,KMZ and KBG respectively and 13.85%, 9.33% ,and 8.80% lower in LDL cholesterol levelusing KMZ+KBG, KMZ and KBG respectively. ANOVA test showed a significant decrease ineach treatment. LSD test showed that there was a significant difference between KMZ+KBGcompared to KBG in total blood cholesterol and LDL lowering, but did not showed significantdifference compared to KMZ.Keywords: oatmeal, olive oil, total blood cholesterol, LDL

Abstract

accelerates wound healing. We examined the effect of Ethanol Extract of Neem Leaf (EENL) inaccelerating wound healing and compared its potential with povidone iodine. This was ananalytic experimental study, using Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with a comparativemethod. We used 30 male Swiss Webster mice that were divided into five groups (n=6). Eachgroup was given the Ethanol Extract of Neem Leaf (EENL) with a concentration of 25%, 12.5%and 25%, aquades (negative control) and povidone iodine 10% (comparison). The averagewound healing time of EENL 25%, EENL 12.5% , EENL 6.25% , povidone iodine and aquadeswere 11.2; 12.2;13.2;13.2;and 1.3 days respectively. The data was analized with one wayANOVA and showed a highly significant difference of p=0.000. Tukey HSD test showed thatEENL 25% and 12.5% had better potential than povidone iodine 10% and EENL 6.25% had thesame potential with povidone iodine 10%. This study concludes that ethanol extract of neem leafhas an effect in accelerating the duration of wound healing, with EENL 25% as the bestconcentration in accelerating the duration of wound healing.Keywords: neem leaf, Azadirachta indica A. Abstract

Lymphadenopaty is a common clinical finding with a broad differential diagnosis, withCarcinoma of Unknown Primary (CUP) as one of it’s most common causes. Flourine-18 fluoro-2 deoxy glucose (18F- FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is a Nuclear Medicinescintigraphy procedure commonly used to localize suspected a primary lesion by depicting ametabolic status. However, in the expertise of 18F FDG PET study, clinical finding andepidemiologic data must be considered to get a better conclusion. We describe 18F-FDG PETstudy in the presence of generalized lymphadenopathy due to chronic lymphocytic leukemia(CLL), a rare disease which is initially suspected of having CUP.Keywords: 18F-FDG PET, lymphadenopathy, lymphoma, leukemia

Abstract

A syringomyelia is a clinical entity of any tubular fluid-filled cavity within the spinalcord that causes slowly but relentlessly progressive symptoms as well as expansion of thecavity, which is most commonly associated with Chiari malformation Type I, which due toadvancement of imaging techniques has resulted in more incidental idiopathic syringes that arenot associated with tumor, trauma, or postinfectious causes. Idiopathic syringomyelia (IS) is apathological entity in which no overt etiology is evident for a syrinx. In this study, we describe acase in a 45 year-old woman presented with progressive difficulties in walking and also hadmyelopathic signs evidenced by hyperreflexia in the lower extremities and underwent foramenmagnum decompression and C1 lamiectomy. Idiopathic syringomyelia is a pathological entityin which no overt etiology is evident for a syrinx. It can be managed succesfully byconservative treatment but if there is a progression of neurological deficit, surgicaldecompression is a mandatory.Keywords: idiopathic syringomyelia, neurological deficit

Abstract

Ameloblastoma is a tumor originating from odontogenic epithelial cells. The tumor islocated in the gray zone between benign and malignant neoplasm. These tumors can occur atany age. Although traditionally divided as solid and cystic ameloblastoma, nearly all showedcystic changes. These tumors are invasive and have a very high recurrence rate. The operativetherapy of choice is radical resection of the affected parts of the jaw, followed byreconstruction. Bridging titanium plate can be used to replace part of lost bone and serves as ameans of reconstruction. Various methods of reconstruction of the mandible can be done byusing a bone graft from the calcaneus, fibula, ribs, scapula, iliac crest, or flap reconstruction.We reported a case of a 18 years old male patient with lump under the tongue that emerged 8years ago, accompanied by eating and speaking difficulty, and shortness of breath. Thediagnosis of mandible ameloblastoma was confirmed by anatomical pathology examination.The patient went through segmental mandibulectomy and free fibular osteoseptocutaneous freeflap with multiple osteotomy. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the signaling circuits regulation within a cell andtheir deregulation plays an important role in cancer development and progression. In thisreview, we discussed miRNA biogenesis, miRNA function and the effect of miRNA abnormalitiesin cellular pathways that led to transformation of normal cells into cancer cells, as well as theindication of miRNAs as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of various types of cancer, asbiomarkers to predict the response to cancer therapy and the potential for development ofmiRNAs as cancer targeted therapy.Keywords: miRNA, cancer, diagnostic biomarker, prognostic biomarker, cancer therapy
