Abstract

This study aims to explain (1) the teacher’s challenges using the application in online teaching classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic, and (2) the strategies used by teachers in teaching using the application. The participants of the research were the English teachers at SMA/SMK/MA in Yogyakarta, Gunungkidul, Magelang, and Kebumen. A qualitative method was employed in this research and using interviews via WhatsApp as a data collection technique. The findings showed that teachers had the challenges such as (1) operating the application during online learning, (2) developing the material, assessment, and evaluation in teaching, (3) developing the teaching method, (4) combining the material and application, and (5) motivating the students and parents. The strategies used by the teacher when using the application in teaching such as (1) watching the video tutorial, (2) choosing a  suitable application for teaching, (3) arranging the new learning schedule, (4) developing the creativity in designing the material, and (5) giving the simple material and task for the students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze student errors in comprehending Elliptical Construction material and to explore the most dominant types of errors made by students. The population of this study was first semester of Constitutional Law students at STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon; it consists of two classes and 40 students. The writer takes one class as a sample, namely HTN A. Samples are taken by Random Sampling because both have the same quality and are taught by the same lecturer. Data is collected from students’ answer sheets of English final test. The result of the tests then was analyzed using quantitative descriptive methods. The results showed that there were 122 errors made by students in answering the question of Elliptical Construction. 41% of these errors occur in Disordering, 32% in Misinformation, 19.67% errors in Addition and 13.11% in Omission.

Abstract

This study had purposes to find out students’ anxiety types, the reason why they got the anxiety and their suggestions for the lecturer who teaches English grammar to release their students’ anxiety. To reach the purposes, a qualitative method was used. Twenty anxious of first year students at university were chosen to be participants of the research. Those students were interviewed by fifteen questions. Most students said that lack knowledge of English Grammar made them anxious in learning the subject. The students suggest the lecturer identified students’ anxiety before the lesson started; creating fun, communicative and less formal class; and overcoming students’ problems in learning Grammar. It is concluded that every students faced anxiety in learning grammar but the lecturer could minimize it.

Abstract

This research is intended to investigate the correlation between students’ habit of watching movie and their speaking mastery. This research used quantitative research with the correlational research type. The sample of this research was 33 students from the fifth semester of English department UIN Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary Padangsimpuan. The data was collected using questionnaire and test and analyzed by using product moment test. The finding of this research showed that there was a correlation between habit of watching movie and speaking in average category with the calculation rcount  ˃ rtable (0.566 ˃ 0.339). Therefore the test of t-test showed that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It can be conclude that there was a significant correlation between habit of watching movie and speaking mastery at the fifth semester of English department UIN Syahada Padangsidimpuan

Abstract

AbstractPengajaran bahasa Inggris disekolah dasar menjadi tantangan bagi guru bahasa Inggris di tingkat sekolah dasar. Guru harus mampu menumbuhkan minat anak dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dalam komponen bahasa, salah satunya adalah kosakata atau vocabulary merupakan kumpulan kata yang dimilikioleh suatu bahasa dan memberikan makna bila kita menggunakan bahasa tersebut. Kosakata bahasa Inggris yang perlu dipelajari oleh siswa sekolah dasar diperkirakan sebanyak lebih kurang 500 kata. Crossword puzzle atau Teka –Teki Silang  digunakan dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu media pembelajaran untuk mendorong minat belajar para siswa. Pembelajaran yang menyenangkan hati anak –anak dan memudahkan guru untuk mengaktifkan dasar siswa dan yang paling penting membuat siswa sekolah dasar senang yang akan menambah kosa kata atau vocabulary.Key word: kosa kata, teka-teki silang dan Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk memecahkan masalah siswa dalam pemahaman bacaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan peningkatan pemahaman bacaan siswa dengan menggunakan Think Pair Share dan mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi peningkatan pemahaman bacaan siswa dengan menggunakan Think Pair Share di kelas VIII SMP N 9 Padangsidimpuan. Berkaitan dengan tujuan penelitian, desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan. Ada 24 siswa sebagai peserta dan juga berkolaborasi dengan guru bahasa Inggris. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik observasi catatan, wawancara, dan tes (siklus uji 1 dan siklus uji 2). Peneliti menganalisa mean skor siswa dan menggunakan t-test untuk mengetahui signifikansi peningkatan pemahaman bacaan siswa. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan TPS dapat meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan siswa termasuk siswa mampu: (1) mengidentifikasi gagasan utama teks; (2) mengidentifikasi informasi spesifik dari teks; (3) mengidentifikasi kosakata teks; (4) mengidentifikasi referensi teks; dan (5) mengidentifikasi pernyataan yang benar atau salah. Selain itu, peningkatan pemahaman bacaan siswa dapat dilihat dari peningkatan skor rata-rata tes baca pada siklus I yaitu sebesar 63,95 (25%) dan tes baca pada siklus II sebesar 81,45 (79,16%). Berdasarkan catatan observasi, situasi kelas juga membaik. Perbaikan situasi kelas meliputi: Sebagian besar siswa aktif dan komunikatif selama proses belajar mengajar dan siswa mulai lebih antusias dalam membaca kelas.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengacu pada penguasaan kosa kata dalam pemerolehan bahasa asing. Penelitian ini khusus menginvestigasi penggunaan Priming Model (menjelaskan suatu kata melalui contoh-contoh dan penjelasan yang dekat dengan konteks kata) dari peguasaan kata. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui sejauh mana penguasaan kata-kata melalui Priming Model dan pengaruh dari  Priming Model terhadap penguasaan kosa kata siswa. Selanjutnya, penelitian ini mengacu pda pendekatan qualitatif dan pendekatan eksperimental yang khusus menelusuri fenomena dari bagaimana siswa memperoleh bahasa dan memahami kata dengan menggunakan Priming Model. Lalu, responden-responden merupakan siswa yang dikategorikan sebagai siswa dengan pengetahuan rendah tentang materi bahasa inggris yang telah belajar dari Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) hingga Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA), sedangkan responden lainnya yaitu siswa yang pengetahuannya dikategorikan high profeciency, sebab mereka telah belajar materi bahasa inggris hingga duduk dibangku kuliah. Lebih lanjut, dalam pengumpulan data, test sangatlah diperlukan. Tes disini merukan tes tertulis dan lisan terhadap dua kategori responden. Hasilnya, diketahui bahwa Priming Model membantu siswa menganalisa dan memahami kata dengan mudah secara konteks dan teks dalam pembelajaran pemerolehan bahasa.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate teachers’ teaching styles variation as a way to solve problems related to students’ learning styles differences during teaching and learning process. The research was a type of qualitative research describing the phenomenon of teachers’ ways to vary their teaching styles. This study was conducted in IAIN Padangsidimpuan toward a teacher teaching in a classroom consisting of 26 students. To collect the data, questioners were given to students; interview and observation were given to teacher. Then, descriptive data analysis was implemented in analyzing the data that were collected. The research found that from the 26 students, 6 students are visual learners, 8 students are audio learners, 2 students are verbal learners and 10 students are kinesthetic learners. In relation to teachers’ teaching styles variation, it was seen that almost all of the teachers’ teaching styles were directed to fulfill all the needs of students’ styles differences. Particularly, the dominant teaching styles were suitable for kinesthetic learners and this is good because most of the students are regarded as kinesthetic. However, the teacher also could vary her teaching to meet all learning styles

Abstract

Tujuan dari jurnal ini adalah untuk menemukan strategi kesopanan dalam acara Pernikahan Batak Mandailing Subyek yang diambil dari anggota makkobar dalam upacar Pernikahan ada 5 orang yaitu, mora, anak boru, kahanggi, suhut dan ketua adat Mandailing. Teknik yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data adalah observasi dan merekam pembicaraan para anggota dalam acara makkobar. Dan kemudian menginterview ketua adat Mandailing seperti menggunakan tutur kekerabatan, kata ganti, kalimat tidak langsung dan salam. Kemudian jenis strategi kesopanan yang ditemukan dalam acara pesta pernikahan itu adalah maksim kedermawanan, maksim pujian, maksim kerendahan hati, maksim persetujuan dan maksim simpati. Maksim yang paling sering diucapkan oleh pembicara adalah maksim kerendahan hati. Alasan maksim ini paling sering dipakai karena pembicara mencoba untuk membuat komunikasi lebih nyaman dan lebih dekat kepada pendengar. Karena dalam kebuyaan Mandailing, pembicara dilarang ketidaknyamanan dalam pesta. Kemudian meminimalkan jarak diantara pembicara dan pendengar dengan cara saling mendekatkan satu dengan yang lainnya.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic change the world, especially for the education. Nearly 1.6 billion learners in the world affected by this phenomenon. So, Indonesia’s government must issue the rule of online learning for the sake of everyone’s safety. It also affects the English language learning as well, especially reading. This study is about the problems of teaching reading with online learning especially in IAIN Purwokerto, Central Java, mainly with the use of Zoom and Google Meet. The author of this article is interested and wants to know very much about it. So, he conducted the research to find the answer about it. The research used qualitative approach, and the data collection technique is interview and literature review of the journals and books. Some results are found, such as the limitation of technologies, students that don’t activate the camera during learning, the teacher can’t observe the students’ respond to the material that have been prepared, and other problems that will be explained further in this article. The author also hope that this article can help making better future of the education, especially for the online learning.
