Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the depiction of gender and the traditional role of characters in the television series Nightmares and Daydreams. The television series Nightmares and Daydreams was made to provide an explanation to the public regarding the dynamics of family life problems in Indonesia combined with science fiction works. This study uses a narrative analysis approach with Walter Fisher's narrative paradigm. The series featured in each episode of Nightmares and Daydreams shows that it has narrative possibilities in the context of everyday life. The traditional role of the figure reflects the cultural life of Indonesia, which has a tradition of talking while at home. Returning to the role of gender, which has an important role in depicting problems that are often experienced in life in Indonesia, by combining science fiction works. The findings show that the series challenges gender stereotypes through several main characters in each episode who are often placed in conflict between traditional values and personal identity. By using qualitative methods, this research explores how men and women are portrayed through social roles, emotional expression, and life dynamics in stories. This research also highlights how popular media can play an important role in shaping gender meaning in society.

Abstract

This study explores how Indonesian ethnic communities construct gender meanings distinct from Western notions of rigid roles and domination–subordination. Focusing on Batak, Javanese, and Bugis women, it analyzes how cultural, religious, and social practices internalize gender values and how the categories of imagined violence and soft gender operate in everyday life. Conducted between June and September 2022, the research applied a qualitative exploratory approach through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and cultural document analysis, supported by discourse and semiotic interpretation with triangulation. Findings reveal flexible and contextual gender understandings: Batak women maintain ritual roles despite male political dominance, Javanese women embrace nrimo yet access equal education, and Bugis women embody siri’ na pacce that binds family honor while granting social authority. Imagined violence emerges as a symbolic, consensual restriction, while soft gender reflects voluntary domestic roles shaped by collective consensus. The study formulates soft gender as a novel analytical category, reconceptualizes imagined violence in multi-ethnic contexts, advances Southern Feminisms theoretically, and offers inclusive policy insights practically.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of digital transformation on the gap in access to information among the elderly in Makassar City. The study focuses on three main variables: access to technological devices, frequency of use of digital services, and digital skills. This study involved 100 elderly respondents who were selected using a simple random sampling technique. The results show that these three variables significantly affect the information gap, with digital skills having the greatest impact. Elderly people with high digital skills are better able to access, understand, and use digital information for daily needs, while limited access to technological devices and low frequency of digital service use exacerbate the information gap. The practical implications include the urgent need for the government and stakeholders in Makassar City to design policies that support the digital literacy of the elderly through community-based training, affordable digital devices, and the improvement of inclusive technological infrastructure. Future research should expand geographic and demographic coverage, integrate qualitative methods, and evaluate the effectiveness of digital literacy programs in addressing information gaps.

Abstract

Tourism is now viewed as a strategic sector that acts as a primary driver of national economic growth. This role is no longer solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Tourism but has become a shared development agenda for all elements of the nation. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Sustainable Tourism Policy in increasing Regional Origin Revenue in North Toraja Regency. The researcher used qualitative methods, with research data obtained from observations, interviews, documentation, and media reviews. Data validation was carried out through triangulation of sources, techniques, and time, and then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques. The results indicate that sustainable tourism in North Toraja Regency has been effective. The effectiveness of sustainable tourism policy is characterized by active cross-sectoral coordination, progressive participation of policymakers, and support from the community and tourism stakeholders. However, the implementation of this policy also faces challenges, including weak transparency in retribution reporting and miscommunication between the local government and tourist attraction managers, which have resulted in a decline in Regional Original Revenue (PAD) in 2023-2024. Therefore, strengthening coordination, transparency, and communication between stakeholders is crucial to maintaining the sustainability and effectiveness of future policies.

Abstract

The digital disruption caused by social media has precipitated a crisis of relevance for professional photojournalists, blurring the lines between journalistic integrity and amateur content. While existing literature predominantly examines these structural shifts as external threats, there is limited research on the internal, agentic responses employed by practitioners to sustain their professional viability. This study examines the survival strategies used by elite Indonesian photojournalists (APFI award winners) in the era of social media. Employing a qualitative case study approach within an interpretivist framework, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 award-winning members of Pewarta Foto Indonesia (PFI). The findings reveal that survival is not achieved by competing with the immediacy of social media, but through a "Strategy of Distinction." This strategy comprises three pillars: (1) Adaptive Competence, where technical mastery elevates to critical visual literacy; (2) Institutional Capital, utilizing awards and certifications as verification mechanisms; and (3) Ethical Rigidity, utilized as a strategic market differentiator against unverified user-generated content. This research contributes to media management theory by reframing competence as a proactive defense mechanism and highlighting the role of professional organizations as vital "survival infrastructures" rather than mere associations.

Abstract

This study aims to map the scholarly development of research on the integration of destination branding and ecotourism within global literature from 2014 to 2024. Using a bibliometric analysis based on Scopus data, the study traces publication trends, author and journal productivity, country level collaboration, and the thematic structures that emerge in international research. A total of 205 articles meeting the selection criteria were analyzed using Biblioshiny in the Bibliometrix package in R Studio, following stages of data cleaning, metadata standardization, and keyword as well as citation-network mapping. The findings indicate a significant rise in publications connecting destination branding with ecotourism, with the highest growth recorded in 2024. Keywords such as ecotourism, destination image, and sustainable tourism dominate the thematic network, while the thematic map reveals three major clusters: the integration of branding and sustainability, tourist experiences and emotional attachment, and the role of ecotourism in shaping destination image. These findings suggest that global research is shifting toward a multidisciplinary approach that positions conservation, local identity, and ecological experience as essential components of destination branding. Nevertheless, methodological limitations such as reliance on metadata, language constraints, and the use of a single database restrict the generalizability of the results. Thus, this study offers an initial overview of the knowledge structure in this field and opens avenues for further research that combines bibliometrics with content analysis to gain a more comprehensive understanding of its conceptual dynamics.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of normalizing body-shaming humor in the Indonesian comedy film Sekawan Limo (2024), using a qualitative narrative study approach, focusing on discourse analysis of dialogue and interactions between characters to reveal how body-shaming-based humor is constructed. Data were collected from dialogue in the film scenes and analyzed using a critical paradigm aimed at sparking social change. The results show that body-shaming is consistently portrayed as a joke, with the character Juna being the primary target. These jokes are found in various forms, such as comparing Juna to ugly mythological figures, direct comments that demean his physical appearance, and nicknames that associate his character with his physique. The use of humor aligns with the theory of superiority humor, where laughter arises from feelings of superiority or satisfaction derived from demeaning others. This study argues that the normalization of body-shaming in the film functions as a degradation ceremony. The sociological process reduces Juna's identity to a mere object of laughter. This process also contributes to cultural hegemony by reinforcing the view that non-ideal bodies are acceptable objects of ridicule, which ultimately influences how viewers view ideal body standards. Films serve not only as entertainment but also as a reflection and formation of social values. Critical reflection on the role of media in reproducing social norms and the ethics of producing more inclusive entertainment content is necessary.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the symbolic communication that contains the names and forms of culinary offerings in the traditional Bancaan Bayi ceremony for believers in Kediri, and how these symbols are understood by the local religious community in the context of intercultural communication. The study uses a qualitative narrative method, observation, interview, and document analysis techniques. The data consists of the names and representations of culinary offerings, which are treated as cultural signs and communication media both with other humans and symbolic communication with God. The findings show that each type of offering contains symbolic messages regarding prayers, hopes, and salvation values that are negotiated through the process of ritual communication. Through Barthes's semiotic perspective, offerings function not only as cultural symbols but also as a form of spiritual and social communication that allows for the exchange of meaning between people from different religious backgrounds. Thus, Bancaan Bayi becomes an arena for intercultural communication that reproduces social harmony through culinary symbolism. This research has implications for supporting interfaith inclusion, thereby encouraging social sustainability and cohesion among community groups.

Abstract

Researchers systematically analyze studies on strategic communication in public relations through a bibliometric review. The aim is to determine the current state and development of research on strategic communication, especially in the context of Public Relations. This research contributes to a broader, more precise understanding of the research landscape on strategic communication and to the identification of keyword trends for future research. The research employed a qualitative approach, along with bibliometric and thematic analyses, to review the literature on strategic communication in the context of public relations. The researcher collected scientific articles on strategic communication in the context of public relations through the Scopus database. The finding that attracts the researcher's attention is the annual growth rate of 2.54% suggests that academic attention remains relatively limited, which consequently impacts the field's growth trajectory. Another finding of this research is the significant evolution in research topics occurred during the period from 2015 to 2025. While previous studies positioned social media and digital technology as 'hot topics' for future inquiry, this study finds that both have since become mature and developing fields. The high density of these keywords indicates that scholars are no longer merely exploring the definitions of social media but are instead investigating in depth how it functions strategically to shape public opinion. The evolution of research topics confirms that the profession is moving beyond technician roles toward strategic management functions, where PR practitioners are increasingly involved in high-level organizational decision-making. The research over the past decade has primarily focused on the corporate context. Consequently, we suggest exploring how non-corporate sectors, such as NGOs, government agencies, and advocacy groups, adopt digital strategic communication practices to achieve their organizational goals.
