Abstract

This research investigates the use of the Let's Read application from the perspective of recreational readers, focusing on students from the English study program at UIN Datokarama Palu. The study aims to understand how students define recreational reading, explore their experiences using the application, and identify encountered challenges. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research gathered data through document reviews and semi-structured interviews with five purposively selected participants. Data analysis followed thematic coding framework guided by Miles and Huberman's qualitative data analysis model. Findings revealed that students possess clear conceptual understanding of recreational reading as leisure activity distinct from academic obligations. The Let's Read application was appreciated for its accessibility, offline reading features, and culturally relevant content. Participants reported increased reading frequency and strengthened identity as recreational readers. However, challenges included limited content targeting older readers, technical issues such as unstable connections, and search limitations within the application. The study concludes that while Let's Read significantly supports recreational reading, enhancements in content diversity and user experience are needed to better serve older student readers. The research offers insights for developers, educators, and policymakers seeking to promote digital literacy and reading engagement through mobile applications.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore how animated educational videos, song clips, and audiovisual game-based learning support vocabulary acquisition, interaction, and active participation among fourth-grade students in an EFL classroom. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the research was conducted in a Thai elementary school with 22 students aged 9-10. Data were collected over seven English lessons through structured non-participant observations and detailed field notes, focusing on behavioral indicators of engagement, understanding, and peer collaboration. Research findings revealed that animated videos helped clarify abstract vocabulary through visual storytelling and repetition, while song clips promoted memorability and emotional involvement through rhythm and movement. Audiovisual games, on the other hand, encouraged sustained focus, classroom interaction, and vocabulary application through playful, feedback-rich activities. Each tool contributed uniquely to different stages of learning, highlighting the value of varied, multimodal media use. This study offers practical insights into how thoughtfully integrated audiovisual tools can enrich English instruction for young learners. It encourages educators to strategically align media types with lesson goals and learner characteristics, particularly in environments with limited access to authentic English use.

Abstract

Metaphor is one of the essential elements of language that reflects a person’s level of creativity and capacity for abstract thinking. This study aims to identify the relationship between students’ personalities—based on the Big Five Personality model—and their ability to construct metaphors in English, using the theoretical framework of Lakoff & Johnson (1980). Employing a quantitative correlational approach, the research involved 65 active students from the English Literature Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar, selected through stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the Indonesian-adapted version of the Big Five Personality questionnaire (IPIP) and a metaphor writing test consisting of 20 items. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the dimension Openness to Experience had a strong and significant positive relationship with metaphor construction ability, establishing it as the strongest predictor. Conscientiousness also showed a significant positive correlation, while Neuroticism had a significant negative correlation. In contrast, Extraversion and Agreeableness were not significantly associated with metaphor ability. These findings highlight that certain personality aspects—particularly openness to experience and self-discipline—play an important role in supporting students’ linguistic creativity, especially in metaphorical expression.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of utilizing local tourist sites as a contextual medium to enhance English language learning through student-created promotional videos produced in a vlogger style. Conducted with 34 senior high school students from MAN 1 Aceh Tengah, Indonesia, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from pre- and post-test English proficiency scores and qualitative insights from student and teacher interviews. The quantitative data analysis involved paired sample t-tests, revealing a significant improvement in students' English proficiency, with post-test scores showing an average increase of 11.5 points compared to pre-test scores (p < 0.001). The qualitative thematic analysis highlighted several critical outcomes: students experienced greater motivation, enjoyment, and increased self-confidence in using English due to authentic interactions during visits to tourist sites. Additionally, the project fostered essential 21st-century skills such as collaboration, creativity, and digital literacy, enhancing overall student engagement and language acquisition. Teachers also expressed positive perceptions, noting the method's effectiveness in connecting theoretical learning to real-world contexts. The findings indicate that using local contexts and student-led digital projects can bridge classroom learning and real-world language use, offering practical insights for educators seeking innovative ways to enhance English proficiency in Indonesian-like settings.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic landscape of GWalk, Surabaya, Indonesia, a region characterized by a rich history of cultural diversity and high multilingualism, particularly in the high-end culinary area, which incorporates influences from Chinese, Javanese, European, and Indonesian cultures. The research collected 201 samples from GWalk using photographs as the primary data source. The analysis reveals multiple dimensions that define the linguistic landscape of high-end culinary spaces. Public signs within the area can be categorized into monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual, reflecting the distribution of languages in the GWalk linguistic landscape. The sociolinguistic aspects of the site highlight the prominence of English as a global language alongside Indonesian. Despite its high-end setting, Indonesian remains the dominant language, coexisting with Chinese, which signifies the dominant ethnic identity in GWalk Citraland, and English represents global connectivity. This interaction among languages offers a promising direction for further research. From an ethnolinguistic perspective, the local language, Javanese, is minimally represented in the linguistic landscape despite efforts to incorporate it through various forms of language modification. These findings underscore the complex dynamics of language use in a socio-culturally diverse and economically stratified urban environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the intricate relationship between semantics and pragmatics within the realm of virtual communication, with a particular emphasis on social media interactions. It explores how the meanings of words and phrases (semantics), in conjunction with the contextual factors surrounding their use (pragmatics), play a crucial role in shaping digital identity and fostering online community formation. The research reveals that language on social media functions not merely as a medium of information exchange but also as a vehicle for conveying emotions, attitudes, and opinions. Specific lexical choices and symbolic elements are shown to signify group affiliation and ideological positioning. The case study of the hashtag #JulidFisabilillah on Twitter exemplifies these phenomena, illustrating how hashtags can serve both as markers of collective identity and as reflections of broader socio, cultural discourses. Ultimately, the findings underscore that effective analysis of social media communication must extend beyond literal content to include consideration of contextual factors. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of digital discourse by foregrounding the interplay of semantics, pragmatics, and context in the construction of meaning and identity in online spaces
