Abstract

The widespread integration of digital teaching platforms in education has prompted an exploration of their impact on teacher workload and well-being. This research focuses on understanding the effects of Platform Merdeka Mengajar (PMM), a prominent digital teaching platform in Indonesia, on the workload and well-being of participating high school teachers in Banda Aceh Municipality and Great Aceh Regency, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive research design, six teachers were interviewed to explore their experiences with PMM. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed that while PMM offers valuable resources and fosters professional collaboration, it also increases workload and stress due to additional preparation time and the need for technological adaptation. The study highlights the importance of providing targeted training, improving the platform's usability, and enhancing its integration features to mitigate these challenges. Despite its limitations, including a small sample size and potential biases in qualitative data, the study provides insights into the potential benefits and challenges of integrating digital platforms into educational practices in Indonesia. The findings underscore the need for a balanced approach to technological integration that supports teachers' professional development and well-being. A more supportive access is necessary to develop the digital platform to balance the nuanced dynamics of teachers’ workload and well-being.

Abstract

Abstract

Reading has become one of the compulsory skills taught in schools and it is one skill which is tested in National Examinations in Indonesia. The needs to comprehend texts, particularly expositional ones, are indispensable. Therefore, this study has an objective to find out the significant differences in students’ evaluation of reading skills and generic structure in analytical and hortatory exposition. After calculating the data using a statistical application, SPSS, we obtained a significant difference in the second-grade students’ evaluation of MAN Darussalam Aceh Besar in analytical and hortatory exposition based on reading comprehension skills. It can be shown that Tcount is higher than Ttable (3.490 > 2.101). There is also a significant difference in students’ evaluation of detailed information and vocabulary skills. Most students had difficulties in answering inference questions. The calculation result of the generic structure of analytical and hortatory exposition shows no significant difference in the second-grade students’ evaluation of Analytical and Hortatory exposition. It can be demonstrated that Tcount (-1.500) is lower than Ttable (2.101). The generic structure comparison table between analytical and hortatory exposition showed no significant difference in students’ evaluation of the second-grade students in identifying the generic structure of the texts. Still, the students scored the lowest in identifying analytical exposition conclusions and hortatory exposition suggestions.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of AI Writing Tools (AIWT) and Blended Learning (BL) on the writing skills of students in rural educational settings and explores the adaptations required by teachers to effectively integrate these technologies. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research assesses how AIWT and BL enhance English writing proficiency among high school students and identifies the infrastructural and pedagogical challenges faced by English teachers. The findings reveal that AIWT and BL significantly improve student engagement and writing quality by providing personalized feedback and fostering more interactive learning environments. The students showed marked improvements in grammar, vocabulary, and overall coherence in their writing. However, the research also highlights challenges such as variable technological proficiency among teachers and infrastructural limitations in rural schools. The study emphasizes the necessity for targeted professional development and infrastructure enhancements to fully leverage the benefits of AIWT and BL in rural educational settings. It suggests that effective integration of technology requires not only technological tools but also comprehensive support systems to assist teachers in overcoming adaptation challenges. These findings offer critical insights for policymakers and educational leaders to develop strategies that support the sustainable implementation of educational technologies, thereby optimizing learning outcomes in underserved regions.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of utilizing local tourist sites as a contextual medium to enhance English language learning through student-created promotional videos produced in a vlogger style. Conducted with 34 senior high school students from MAN 1 Aceh Tengah, Indonesia, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from pre- and post-test English proficiency scores and qualitative insights from student and teacher interviews. The quantitative data analysis involved paired sample t-tests, revealing a significant improvement in students' English proficiency, with post-test scores showing an average increase of 11.5 points compared to pre-test scores (p < 0.001). The qualitative thematic analysis highlighted several critical outcomes: students experienced greater motivation, enjoyment, and increased self-confidence in using English due to authentic interactions during visits to tourist sites. Additionally, the project fostered essential 21st-century skills such as collaboration, creativity, and digital literacy, enhancing overall student engagement and language acquisition. Teachers also expressed positive perceptions, noting the method's effectiveness in connecting theoretical learning to real-world contexts. The findings indicate that using local contexts and student-led digital projects can bridge classroom learning and real-world language use, offering practical insights for educators seeking innovative ways to enhance English proficiency in Indonesian-like settings.

Abstract

As the need for equality in education is fundamental, this study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research on English Teaching in Inclusive Education (ETIE) indexed in Scopus from 1997 to 2023. The aim is to systematically examine the scope and trends within ETIE literature, identifying gaps and opportunities for future research. Utilizing a methodical approach for 201 Scopus-indexed publications, the study progresses through four distinct phases: initial database search using Publish or Perish, rigorous filtering of publications based on predefined bibliometric criteria, verification of data accuracy with Mendeley Desktop, and detailed analysis employing VOSviewer. The findings reveal a concerning decline in ETIE publications over time, suggesting a waning academic interest in this crucial area of study. Despite the decrease in publications, the analysis highlights several key areas that remain underexplored and could significantly benefit from further scholarly attention. The study underscores the importance of increased research collaboration and the adoption of more inclusive education practices in English teaching. Implications of this research are far-reaching, offering critical insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers. By providing a clearer understanding of the current landscape of ETIE research, the study paves the way for enhancing educational practices and supports the development of more inclusive educational environments. This will, in turn, contribute to the broader goal of ensuring equitable education access for all students, particularly those within diverse learning contexts.
