Abstract

This study explores the socio-cultural dynamics and identity formation processes within contemporary Papuan communities amid rapid modernization, globalization, and political change. Drawing on qualitative data from field observations, interviews, and document analysis, the research highlights how Papuans negotiate their cultural heritage and social identity in the face of external influences such as state policies, religious conversion, and digital media proliferation. Findings reveal that Papuan identity is not static but fluid, characterized by adaptive strategies that blend traditional values with modern realities. The role of Christianity, youth activism, and social media emerges as critical in shaping new expressions of ethnic identity. However, challenges persist due to uneven implementation of autonomy policies and tensions between development initiatives and cultural preservation. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of indigenous resilience, emphasizing the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive governance approaches in Papua. The implications underscore the importance of recognizing indigenous agency in shaping social and political futures.

Abstract

This article examines the evolution and role of Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution in shaping the country’s democratic governance from a political perspective. Following the reformation era, constitutional amendments were enacted to transform Indonesia from an authoritarian regime into a democratic state by establishing direct presidential elections, strengthening legislative authority, guaranteeing human rights, and creating independent institutions such as the Constitutional Court and the Corruption Eradication Commission. Using a qualitative normative approach and political-legal analysis, this study explores how these constitutional reforms have redefined power relations and institutional functions within Indonesia’s political system. While the amended Constitution provides a solid legal framework for democracy, challenges remain in its implementation, including political elite interests, institutional weaknesses, and ongoing attempts to manipulate constitutional norms. The findings suggest that the sustainability of Indonesian democracy depends not only on the constitutional text but also on political actors’ commitment, judicial independence, and active civil society participation. This article contributes to the understanding of constitutional democracy as a dynamic process influenced by both legal frameworks and political realities.

Abstract

This article explores the multifaceted role of law as a catalyst for social change, integrating theoretical insights with comparative empirical analysis. Drawing from classical sociological perspectives, critical legal studies, and interdisciplinary approaches, the paper examines how legal systems both reflect and shape evolving societal norms, values, and power dynamics. Through selected case studies—including civil rights reforms, environmental legislation, gender equality policies, and digital privacy laws—it highlights the conditions under which legal reforms succeed or fail in producing meaningful social transformation. The findings reveal that while law can institutionalize progressive change, its effectiveness depends on a range of factors, including political will, enforcement mechanisms, legal culture, and public legitimacy. The article argues that law functions most effectively as an instrument of social change when integrated with broader strategies of civic engagement, structural reform, and inclusive governance. Ultimately, the study underscores the necessity of a critical, context-sensitive, and future-oriented legal framework capable of addressing the complexities of contemporary social challenges.

Abstract

This study explores the critical role of political education in strengthening democracy in Indonesia, a nation marked by vast cultural diversity and complex political dynamics. Despite significant institutional reforms since the 1998 reformation, challenges such as political polarization, limited civic engagement, and digital misinformation continue to undermine democratic consolidation. Through qualitative analysis based on in-depth interviews and document reviews, the research examines the current conceptualization and implementation of political education within formal schooling and non-formal settings. Findings reveal that political education in Indonesia often remains constrained by traditional, knowledge-based approaches, lacking emphasis on critical thinking, participatory learning, and digital literacy. Non-formal education and civil society initiatives show promise but face sustainability and integration challenges. The digital era presents both opportunities and risks, necessitating adaptive educational strategies that incorporate media literacy and ethical digital citizenship. This paper argues that to foster a resilient, substantive democracy, Indonesia must reform political education comprehensively—embracing innovative pedagogies, cross-sectoral collaboration, and continuous evaluation focused on civic engagement outcomes. Strengthening political education is not only a policy imperative but a fundamental civic responsibility to empower citizens in exercising their democratic rights and responsibilities.

Abstract

This study examines the profound geopolitical shifts in the Middle East following the intensification of tensions between Israel and Iran. It highlights a significant realignment of regional alliances, as several Arab states, particularly in the Gulf, have moved beyond longstanding ideological divides to establish formal diplomatic and security cooperation with Israel, driven largely by shared concerns over Iran’s regional ambitions. The research also underscores Iran’s strategic reliance on asymmetric warfare and proxy forces, such as Hezbollah, Shia militias in Iraq, the Houthis in Yemen, and its entrenched presence in Syria, to project power indirectly while avoiding direct military confrontation. Furthermore, the study reveals the increasing centrality of non-state actors in shaping regional security dynamics, blurring the traditional state-centric framework and complicating conflict resolution efforts. The evolving roles of global powers—namely the United States, Russia, and China—are analyzed, showing how their distinct policies and competing interests contribute to a complex, multipolar environment in the Middle East. Finally, the findings suggest a decline in traditional sectarian and ethnic divisions as primary determinants of foreign policy, replaced by pragmatic considerations including national interests, regime survival, and economic modernization. In conclusion, the Israel-Iran rivalry has acted as a catalyst for a broader transformation of Middle Eastern geopolitics, resulting in a more fluid and decentralized regional order. While this shift opens new avenues for diplomacy and cooperation, it also heightens unpredictability and demands continuous strategic recalibration by both regional and global actors.

Abstract

Despite global advocacy for educational equity, many educational systems continue to inadequately support minoritized learners, particularly those from low-income families and ethnic or racial minority groups, who face systemic barriers such as underrepresentation, economic disparities, discrimination, and unequal access to resources. This study addresses the critical research problem of how exclusionary practices in education limit the potential of marginalized learners and hinder broader social development, highlighting the urgent need for equity-focused interventions. By conducting a systematic literature-based analysis of studies published between 2010 and 2024, this paper identifies recurring patterns of exclusion, effective strategies for fostering inclusivity, and policy gaps that perpetuate educational inequities. Key findings indicate that equity-oriented educational policies—such as targeted resource allocation, culturally responsive curricula, and inclusive pedagogical practices—significantly enhance the academic outcomes, social mobility, and career opportunities of minoritized learners.   The study contributes to the discourse on inclusive education by providing evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and educators, demonstrating that sustainable social development is attainable only when educational systems actively prioritize inclusivity and equity. These findings underscore the necessity of comprehensive, systemic reforms to ensure that no learner is left behind, thereby promoting broader societal well-being and reducing inequalities.

Abstract

This study looks at how social and economic factors have affected crime patterns in Japan over the past 20 years. It focuses on how changes in population, economy, and society have led to more minor crimes by the elderly and more serious crimes by young people. Using a qualitative method and secondary data from official reports and academic sources, the study aims to understand the social and economic reasons behind these crime changes. This study looks at how social and economic factors have affected crime in Japan over the last 20 years. Even though Japan has low crime rates, changes like an aging population and economic problems such as income gaps and job insecurity have caused crime patterns to change. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with secondary data from crime reports, census data, and academic articles. The data from the last 20 years are analyzed by looking for common themes related to social and economic factors affecting crime. The findings show that more elderly people are involved in minor crimes due to social isolation and financial difficulties. Meanwhile, economic pressure and social breakdown among young people lead to more serious crimes like cybercrime and domestic violence. The Japanese government has made policies to address these issues, but a broader approach that includes social, economic, and psychological aspects is needed for better crime prevention. This study highlights the need to understand crime as a complex social problem to develop lasting and flexible policies that adapt to social changes.

Abstract

This study investigates how the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana functions as an analytical framework for understanding the configuration of social relations in Balinese society. Addressing the research question—in what ways do the principles of Parhyangan, Pawongan, and Palemahan shape and regulate social structure amid contemporary sociocultural change?—the study employs a qualitative design grounded in interpretive sociology. Data were collected through purposive observations, semi-structured interviews with community leaders and cultural practitioners, and document analysis of local regulations and customary texts. Guided by the conceptual lens of relational ontology, the analysis demonstrates that Tri Hita Karana does not merely serve as a cultural value system but operates as a dynamic mechanism that structures authority, communal cooperation, and ecological stewardship. The findings reveal the adaptive capacities of these principles when faced with pressures from modernization, tourism development, and shifting land-use patterns. Rather than remaining static, the philosophy evolves through institutional innovations such as community-based agritourism, participatory land governance, and temple-centered social coordination. This study contributes theoretically by situating Tri Hita Karana within broader debates on indigenous knowledge systems and sustainable social organization. It also offers scholarly insight into how localized philosophical frameworks can generate resilient socio-ecological governance models.

Abstract

This study investigates the multidimensional character of poverty in South Africa’s rural communities and analyzes its implications for inclusive and sustainable development. The research aims to clarify how structural constraints—including limited access to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and employment—shape persistent socio-economic deprivation in selected rural provinces. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation, and document analysis. The data were examined using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns, local dynamics, and context-specific drivers of poverty. Findings reveal not only income-based deprivation but also entrenched institutional and spatial inequalities that weaken local economic capacities and reinforce dependence on social grants. The study identifies distinctive community-led strategies—such as cooperatives, informal savings groups, and localized knowledge systems—that demonstrate resilience and offer pathways for empowerment. These insights contribute to existing scholarship by highlighting how grassroots initiatives interact with structural barriers in shaping rural development outcomes.  T The study concludes that effective rural development in South Africa requires integrated policy interventions that strengthen local capacities, enhance service delivery, and position communities as active partners in planning and implementation to reduce the rural–urban development gap.

Abstract

This study examines the evolving dynamics of social and political relations in Turkey amid its ongoing democratic transformation, focusing on how diverse social forces interact with the state and shape the trajectory of democratization. Positioned between Europe and Asia, Turkey provides a complex setting where formal democratic institutions coexist with increasing authoritarian tendencies.  Employing a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach, the research analyzes developments from the early 2000s to the post-2016 period, drawing on policy documents, political speeches, academic literature, and civil society reports. It explores how state authority engages not only with organized civil society but also with broader social actors—such as media networks, religious communities, gender-based movements, and digital activism—that influence political participation and public discourse. The findings indicate that while constitutional and institutional reforms have expanded the procedural framework of democracy, substantive aspects—particularly freedom of expression, media independence, and pluralism—remain constrained by centralizing state power. Nevertheless, new forms of civic engagement, including online mobilization and gender equality campaigns, demonstrate society’s adaptive strategies and resilience. Democratization in Turkey thus emerges as a non-linear and contested process, shaped by the tension between state control and the plural aspirations of its citizens. By integrating social dimensions and empirical illustrations, this study offers a nuanced contribution to understanding how hybrid regimes negotiate power, participation, and identity in transitional democratic contexts,
