Abstract

This abstract presents a comprehensive analysis of QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:3 regarding polygamy through the framework of al-manṭūq and al-mafhūm, aiming to understand both the explicit and implicit meanings of the verse and to synthesize them into a holistic understanding that is socially and ethically relevant. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research, examining classical and contemporary tafsīr, uṣūl al-fiqh literature, and scholarly articles on polygamy and justice, through thematic analysis that situates the verse within its socio-historical context and the objectives of sharī‘ah (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah). The findings indicate that al-manṭūq provides limited permission for polygamy of up to four wives under the condition of justice, while al-mafhūm emphasizes material, emotional, and social dimensions of justice, making monogamy often the more appropriate choice, with polygamy serving as a conditional allowance in specific social circumstances, such as protection of orphans and widows. The application of the principle of al-manṭūq wa al-mafhūm demonstrates that Islamic law integrates legal certainty with ethical responsibility, emphasizing justice, welfare, and harm prevention. This study contributes to tafsīr scholarship by highlighting the importance of a holistic analysis of the verse, reducing narrow interpretations and misuse, and providing a balanced, ethical, and contextually relevant perspective on Islamic law for modern society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of the nuzulī interpretation method in Kitab al-Tafsīr al-Ḥadīth by Muhammad ‘Izzat Darwazah and Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karīm: Interpretation of Short Surahs Based on the Order of Revelation by M. Quraish Shihab. The research is motivated by the renewed scholarly interest in the nuzulī approach within contemporary Qur’anic studies, a method that arranges surahs according to the chronological order of revelation. This study employs a library research design using a comparative analytical method. The primary data sources are the two tafsir works, supported by secondary literature relevant to the topic. The findings indicate that both tafsirs are arranged based on tartīb nuzulī (chronological order of revelation). In terms of interpretive sources, both employ the bi al-iqtirān method; in their explanatory approach, they use the muqārin method; and in their elaboration, they adopt the iṭnābī method. The main difference lies in their scope: Darwazah interprets all 114 surahs, while Quraish Shihab focuses on selected thematic surahs. Therefore, al-Tafsīr al-Ḥadīth is categorized as nuzulī tajzī’ī interpretation, while Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karīm represents the nuzulī maudū‘ī type.

Abstract

This study explores the development of the meaning of the word Raja’a in the Qur’an using Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic approach. The research aims to enrich Qur’anic semantic studies and provide a deeper understanding of the concept of Raja’a. Lexically, Raja’a is defined in Arabic dictionaries as “to return” or “once again,” while in the Qur’an it carries various meanings such as rain, return, repentance, restoration, and death. This research is a qualitative library study, with primary data consisting of Qur’anic verses containing the word Raja’a, Toshihiko Izutsu’s God and Man in the Qur’an, and several Arabic lexicons. The findings show that Raja’a appears 104 times in 98 verses across 43 surahs. Based on Izutsu’s semantic analysis, the basic meaning of Raja’a is “to return,” while its relational meanings include “to repent,” “to reconcile,” “rain,” and “Allah as the ultimate return.” Diachronically, in the pre-Qur’anic period Raja’a simply meant “to return” without religious connotation, but in the Qur’anic period its meaning expanded into a spiritual concept reflecting the relationship between humans and God. The weltanschauung of Raja’a signifies “returning to the origin,” referring to the return of all things to their initial state or source.

Abstract

This article examines the story of Prophet Yunus in the Qur'an using A. J. Greimas' structural narrative theory, especially the actant model and narrative functional scheme. This study aims to explore the narrative structure of the story within the framework of structural semiotics in order to show the pattern of meaning transformation and character dynamics in the prophetic journey of Prophet Yunus. The methodology used is a qualitative-descriptive approach with an analysis of related Qur'anic texts, especially in Surah As-Saffat [37]:139–148, Q.S. Al-Anbiya’ [21] : 87-88, Yunus [10]:98, and Al-Qalam [68]:48–50. The results of the analysis show that the narrative structure of the story of Yunus represents six actant positions and three main functional stages that form spiritual and narrative transformation. This study contributes to strengthening the structural approach in the study of narrative interpretation and opens up interdisciplinary space between Qur'anic studies and modern narrative theory.

Abstract

The Quran is a guide to life, a source of inner peace for humans. In modern life, characterized by stress, anxiety, and a loss of spiritual direction, the values of the Quran offer a genuine solution. This article examines the concept of peace from a Quranic perspective using a thematic interpretation (maudhu'i) approach. Analysis of several verses shows that peace (as-sakinah and ath-thuma'ninah) is achieved through faith, dhikrullah (remembrance of Allah), tawakkul (trust in God), and a balance between worldly and afterlife aspects. This study utilizes classical and contemporary sources of interpretation, such as those by Ibn Kathir, Quraish Shihab, and M. Yunan Yusuf. The results indicate that the stronger a person's spiritual connection with the Quran, the greater the peace they experience.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implications of variations in the science of Qira'at for Quranic interpretation and the Istinbat of Islamic law. Qira'at, as a discipline that studies various readings of the Quran, reflects the diversity of Islamic scholarly traditions and demonstrates the complexity of understanding the sacred text. This study employed a qualitative approach using library research methods through a review of classical and contemporary literature, including books on Qira'at, tafsir, and ushul fiqh. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis and descriptive techniques to identify the relationship between differences in readings and changes in meaning that influence the process of interpretation and the determination of Islamic law. The results show that variations in Qira'at are not only related to phonetics but also affect the meaningful structure of verses, which in some cases has implications for different legal conclusions. These findings confirm that mastery of Qira'at is a crucial element for commentators and fuqaha (jurists) in producing comprehensive and contextual interpretations and formulations of Islamic law.

Abstract

There are many verses in the Qur'an that explain the occurrence of thunder and lightning phenomena/events, all of these events are proof of the power and greatness of Allah SWT. Lightning has a very important role in the lives of all creatures on earth. However, there are times when it can cause disaster/danger for His creatures. Thunder and lightning are natural phenomena that occur when rain falls. Therefore, the nature of lightning will be the object of this research based on the interpretation of Mafa>tih }al-Ghoyb by Fakhruddi>n Al-Ra>zi>. The problem that will be discussed in this research is the nature of lightning according to Fakhruddin Al-Ra>zi in the interpretation of Mafa>tih} al-Ghoyb and will be explained in two focuses, namely: 1. What is the essence of lightning according to Fakhruddi>n Al-Ra>zi> in his book Mafa>tih} al-Ghoyb)? 2. What are the benefits and dangers of lightning in identifying, collecting, processing and research related to lightning, whether in the form of the Koran according to Fakhruddi>n Al-Ra>zi> in his book Mafa>tih} al-Ghoyb)? In this research, the author uses a library research approach, so steps will be taken on primary data and secondary data accurately and factually. Based on the results of this research, the greatness of Allah SWT will be revealed in His creation, especially regarding lightning, which in the Al-Qur'an is expressed in three words, namely Al-Ra'd, Al-Barq, and Al-Sa>'iqah. According to Fakhruddi>n Al-Ra>zi> interprets the meaning of the word Al-Ra'd as the sound heard from clouds colliding with each other caused by gusts of wind which cause them to collide with each other, Al-Barq is light coming out of the clouds accompanied by a strike. which strikes something so that it shines on it, and Al-S}a>'iqah is an explosion accompanied by a lightning strike accompanied by soft fire which can destroy something strongly, the speed of the strike cannot be matched and it immediately reaches the earth. Lightning is a direct guidance from Allah SWT to humans so that they always have devotion to Him and have a big role for His creatures. Lightning is good news for farmers because there will be a sign of rain that will fertilize the plants, a warning for humans to always glorify Allah SWT, wisdom for people who always remember the greatness of Allah SWT and a lesson for people who are wise.
