Abstract

Discriminatory parenting is the consistent unfair or differential treatment of children by parents, which then negatively impacts the child’s mental health. This study explores in depth the impact of discriminatory parenting and family violence on an individual’s mental health. This qualitative case study focuses on the experiences of a young adult who felt neglected and under-represented, especially financially, compared to her siblings. In addition, she experienced repeated physical violence from authority figures that left her deeply traumatized, compounded by the lack of protection from other family members. This condition triggered feelings of anger, injustice, disgust, and even suicidal ideation. Despite the various pressures, the participant showed significant resilience, developing adaptive coping mechanisms such as isolating herself, crying, and seeking comfort through art. Crucial support from close friends was a significant turning point that helped her through difficult times, demonstrating the vital role of social support in resilience. Spiritual beliefs also provided an internal source of strength that allowed her to find meaning in her suffering and view challenges as a process of self-strengthening. The results of this study confirm that discriminatory and abusive parenting can seriously damage mental health, but also highlight the extraordinary capacity of individuals to survive and find a way out. Practical implications emphasize the need for comprehensive psychological interventions, such as Client-Centered Therapy, CBT, Trauma-Informed Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, as well as the importance of psychoeducation and strengthening social support networks for vulnerable individuals.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and discuss in depth the strategies for developing teachers’ professional competence at MA Ma’arif, focusing on three main aspects: (1) the leadership strategies implemented by the school principal, (2) the obstacles encountered in developing teachers’ professional competence, and (3) the recommended model for future professional competence development. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data analysis techniques included data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that: (1) the principal’s leadership strategy in developing teachers’ professional competence to improve educational quality is carried out through two approaches. The first is a formal strategy in which teachers are assigned by the institution to participate in education and training programs. The second is a non-formal strategy in which teachers independently take the initiative to develop and improve their professional skills related to their duties and positions. (2) Several obstacles in developing teachers’ professional competence include limited mastery of information technology within the school, time constraints, limited teacher creativity in classroom learning processes, insufficient collections of books or school facilities, and the lack of scientific publications produced by teachers. (3) The model that can be used to enhance teachers’ professionalism in carrying out their duties is through an *in-service training* program.

Abstract

The main challenge in regional education development lies in the suboptimal formulation of policies produced by legislative members, which often fail to fully address the needs of communities and educational institutions. This study examines the work programs of legislative members in the education sector in Gresik, with the hypothesis that there is a gap between policy formulation and its actual implementation in the field. The research subjects included legislative members responsible for education and relevant stakeholders, employing a qualitative methodology through in-depth interviews, policy document analysis, and observation of the legislative process. The findings reveal that the formulation of education policies in Gresik remains heavily influenced by political interests, lacks sufficient public participation, and is not fully based on the actual needs of educational institutions. The discussion emphasizes the necessity of strengthening community participation mechanisms, enhancing data-driven planning, and ensuring transparency within the legislative process to produce education policies that are more relevant, equitable, and effective. Thus, this study contributes to the literature on public policy and provides practical recommendations for improving the quality of education governance at the regional level.

Abstract

Reading is one of the fundamental skills that students must master from the early stages of education. Good reading ability not only supports students’ understanding of various subjects but also contributes to the development of critical thinking skills. However, low reading interest and limited reading comprehension abilities remain significant challenges in primary education. This condition affects the quality of learning and limits students’ ability to understand information in depth. Therefore, the use of engaging and effective learning media is necessary to improve students’ reading abilities. This study aims to examine the effect of using flashcard media on the reading comprehension ability of fourth-grade elementary school students. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The research population consisted of all fourth-grade students, with a total sample of 36 students, divided into 17 students in the experimental group and 19 students in the control group. Data were collected through a pretest and a posttest, and then analyzed using tests of normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis testing. The results of the study indicate that the use of flashcard media has a significant positive effect on students’ reading comprehension ability. These findings suggest that interactive visual media can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to improve the quality of reading instruction and strengthen literacy skills among elementary school students.

Abstract

Reading is one of the fundamental skills that students must master from an early stage of education. Proficient reading skills not only support comprehension across various subjects but also contribute to the development of students’ critical thinking abilities. However, low interest in reading and limited reading comprehension remain significant challenges in elementary education. This study aims to examine the effect of using flashcard media on the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade elementary school students. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The population consisted of all fourth-grade students, with a total sample of 36 students: 17 in the experimental group and 19 in the control group. Data were collected through pretest and posttest assessments, and analyzed using normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis tests. The findings revealed a significant positive effect of flashcard media on students’ reading comprehension abilities. This study contributes a novel insight into the use of visual media as an effective instructional tool to enhance literacy at the elementary level. The implications suggest that integrating engaging and interactive media, such as flashcards, can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to improve the quality of reading instruction. Furthermore, this research opens opportunities for the development of similar media in other learning contexts.
