Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate and describe the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of tertiary-level EFL students in Indonesia toward reading English. Researchers used quantitative design in conducting this study. There were 77 students from English department at Universitas Brawijaya who voluntarily participate in this study, selected through convenience sampling. The quantitative method was applied by asking students to fill out a questionnaire adapted from Wigfield and Guthrie's Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) (1997). Besides that, students’ self-assessment reading report used to measure students’ reading proficiency. In addition, The correlation between students' motivation to read and their reading proficiency was also investigated in this study. The data collected were analyzed using the SPSS program with descriptive statistics to answer research question 1 and Pearson correlation analysis to answer research question 2. The results indicated that students are relative highly extrinsic motivated in reading English. Meanwhile, both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation were found to have a significant correlation with students reading. In addition, it was also found that intrinsic motivation has the strongest correlation, and extrinsic motivation displayed lower correlation with reading proficiency. Based on these findings, lecturers are expected to increase students' intrinsic motivation to read.

Abstract

Translation, along with technological advancement, has been a critical step in enabling the journalistic message to transcend territorial borders. This study aims to determine the type of equivalence contained in the news translation of VICE Indonesia YouTube channel and its impact on the translation quality. The data were taken from the subtitle transcript of VICE Indonesia. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive method. Several theories were elaborated within this research namely, Nida & Taber theory of equivalence (cited in Panou, 2013, p.2) and the equivalence theory of Baker (2018), and the adopted model of translation quality assessment from Nababan et al. (2012). The results of this study showed that there were six types of equivalence found within the subtitles: formal equivalence, dynamic equivalence, equivalence at word level, equivalence above word level, grammatical equivalence, and pragmatic equivalence. Grammatical equivalence is the type that dominates the overall data. Furthermore, the findings shows that 66.67% of samples were categorized as less communicative, 58.33% of samples were evaluated as unacceptable translations, and 38.89% of the sample scored as high readability level.

Abstract

This study investigates the hybridity across linguistic studies from 2017 to 2019. It specifically attempts to figure out the trends of hybrid linguistic areas. To have a clear insight into the issue, a qualitative text analysis was adopted as the design of study. As the data sources, 304 research articles in linguistics were successfully retrieved from the digital data bases of internationally reputable linguistic journals. From each year, the newest released articles were purposively selected as the data sources. To have the clear insight into the hybrid areas across linguistic studies, the initial analysis was carried out on the titles of research articles. Further, the analysis was also conducted on the abstracts and research questions. Based on the analysis on the titles, abstracts and research questions, it was found that there were 16 types of hybridity across linguistic studies from 2017 to 2019. The two most frequent hybrid linguistic fields in sequence encompass ‘critical discourse analysis + multimodality’ and ‘critical discourse analysis + systemic functional linguistics’. It is expected that the results of this study contributes to provide the insight into the possibility of mixing different areas of linguistic studies as a way of solving human’s growing complex humanistic problems.

Abstract

Despite the pivotal role of local tour guides to promote tourist attractions in their region, most of them cannot use English communicatively. There is a need to upskill their English level through a training program. This study aims to evaluate Trenggalek’s local tour guides after joining a series of training on Speaking and Writing in English. This study employs a qualitative design with the test results analysis. Five tour guides were tested through verbal and written assessment through a contextualized framework that fit Indonesians’ characteristics as EFL learners. Their abilities were analyzed through adapted rubrics and scoring criteria. Results show that only a few tour guides successfully upgraded their English skills. However, they showed more diverse Speaking abilities compared to their Writing ability. These findings imply that more focus should be put on the training of Speaking skill, and that more workshops should be presented in series coupled with follow-up activities to get tour guides used to using English.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using role play toward speaking skill in learning English at the Class X students of SMKS Muhammadiyah Pangkalan Bun. Quasi experimental research was administered in this study, using two groups of experimental and control. Multimedia 1 class as the experimental group and Multimedia 2 class as the control group. There were six meetings for each group with four meetings for treatment, and other two meetings for pre-test and post-test. The data were in form of speaking scores emphasizing on fluency, structure, and bravery. From the t-test for independent samples, the result showed that the value of t-test was 0.034 less than 0.05. It means that the result of posttest scores in experimental and control groups are significantly different. Then, from the comparison of the means between pretest and posttest of experimental and control groups, the experimental group’s mean outperformed the control group in 2.20. It means that role play is effective in speaking skill in learning English. Furthermore, this study also showed that role play could create a communicative atmosphere in the classroom.
