Abstract

This research aimed at knowing learners’ capability in mastering TOEFL test on reading comprehension part for EFL Learners. It was a descriptive quantitative research. It was conducted at the fourth semester students of EFL Learners as the sample of research. The class consisted of 3 classes and the sampling used of this research was cluster random sampling by lottery the class. The sample was class A consisted of 25 EFL Learners. In collecting the data, the instrument was given in the form of reading comprehension of TOEFL test and it was consisted of 50 items dealing with mastering main idea, mastering explicit implicit information, mastering reference, mastering meaning of word, and mastering inferences. After collecting the data, it was analyzed descriptive statistics by operating SPSS 26 for windows to know the mean score of students’ test. The mean score of the test was 32.3. It was categorized into very low. Therefore, the students of EFL Learners had very low capability in answering TOEFL reading comprehension section. Therefore, it is significantly for the students who have low ability in reading comprehension to mastering the strategies in answering the reading test.

Abstract

Code-mixing and code-switching can effectively deal with the complex communicative demands that arise when participants have varied levels of linguistic ability. This paper aimed to examine the types and the functions of code-mixing and code-switching uttered by Cinta Laura Kiehl in Okay Boss Trans7’s Talk Show on 23/06/2020, entitled “Ada Apa Dengan Cinta Laura Kiehl dan Aero'' (What happened to Cinta Laura Kiehl and Aero). The design of this study used a qualitative descriptive method. Data were gathered from the talk show in written data. An explanatory sample was used to analyze the collected data. The findings revealed 27 data of code-mixing used by Cinta Laura Kiehl: 19 were intra-sentential code-mixing, and eight were intra-lexical code-mixing. Besides, 19 data of code-switching were identified: 10 were intra-sentential switching, eight were inter-sentential switching, and one was emblematic code-switching. Furthermore, the most dominant function of code-mixing was incompetence, with 15 data, and the most dominant function of code-switching was covering the ability to speak a specific language, with eight data. The study results are expected to contribute to students and lecturers of English and researchers engaging in sociolinguistic research to explore further the purpose of using code-mixing and code-switching in conversation.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to Introduce the ELSA Speak Application as media to improve students' pronunciation skills. English Language Speech Assistant is an acronym for ELSA. English Language Speech Assistant can be downloaded for free from AppStore or Google Play. complete with various features to improve the pronunciation and speaking of students with American accents by training them with various exercises to pronounce words/phrases/sentences correctly. Corresponding to the microphone icon that the learner can use directly to speak as the audio has been listened to.This research is an Action Research that aims to Improve students’ pronunciation skills using ELSA Speak Application. This research discusses how ELSA Speak Application as learning media can improve students’ pronunciation skills. The data were collected through a test of pronunciation and Interviews in Classroom action research. The researcher made three cycles and gave a score for each cycle. In the first cycle, the students’ Average score is 70 points, the second cycle is 75 points and the last cycle is 80 points. ELSA Speak application helps students pronounce a variety of words more easily and comprehensively. The results showed that the use of the ELSA Speak Application has provided convenience and benefits for students in improving their English Pronunciation skills by using the ELSA Speak application.

Abstract

Speaking becomes one of the English skills that should be developed. One of the schools that provided a special speaking class for the students is the Islamic Boarding Based Junior High School of Amanatul Ummah. Speaking class is labeled as a conversation subject in this school. In conversation class, the teachers are required to improve the students’ speaking skills. The teachers who handled a conversation subject were foreign teachers who used full English during teaching and learning. This paper investigates the foreign teachers’ perspectives of the teaching conversation subject. This research used qualitative method using descriptive approach. The participants of this research were two foreign conversation teachers of SMPBP and the participants were chosen using purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained through three instruments namely observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The data then were analyzed using four stages namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The result of this research showed that the foreign teachers faced several problems related to the students’ understanding, engagement, and teaching materials. The strategies used by the teachers were using digital tools, gestures, language simplifying, early materials preparation, and discussion with senior EFL teachers. This research contributes to the literature of English language teaching related to the teaching conversation subject.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the user perception of their experience in using the auto-translate feature on social media. A mixed-method is employed in this study to gain quantitative and qualitative results and provide a more in-depth understanding of the analysis, with an online questionnaire as the research instrument. In order to reach a broader audience, snowball sampling is used since there are no specific criteria for the subject target. The majority of the respondents are women with bachelor's degrees aged 17-28. There are three aspects of assessment on the questionnaire following Nababan’s theory: accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The findings showed that the result of the auto-translate feature on social media has good accuracy, moderate readability, and is very acceptable. Meanwhile, the shortcomings of this feature are lack of context understanding, mistranslation due to wrong diction, and grammar updates.

Abstract

Investigating the causal factors, effects, and strategies to overcome writing anxiety is the aim of this research. A fifth semester student of English Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Tanjungpura with high learning motivation was chosen as the participant of this research. A case study design was employed in this research by using semi-structured interview and document analysis as the method of data collection. The result of the data analysis indicated that the student experienced cognitive writing anxiety where she felt difficult in deciding a writing topic, choosing relevant vocabulary, and using appropriate grammar. Writing anxiety was caused by a high frequency of assignment, feeling lack of linguistics skill and vocabulary, and fear of being criticized by others. Based on the findings, it was revealed that the writing anxiety experienced by the participant brought a facilitative effect toward her writing performance which led her to take some efforts by managing several strategies to overcome the writing anxiety. It was reported that vocabulary checking, creating constructive surroundings to have writing practice, diary writing, and doing writing challenge were strategies she had used to overcome her writing anxiety.

Abstract

A translator must have a thorough grasp of a language and its culture in order to determine the most appropriate interpretation while being true to the culture's intent. They must understand the translation technique and category to maintain consistency while translating cultural texts such as idioms and culture-specific items. This study explored translation procedures for idioms and culture-specific items, as well as their categories, in light of these considerations. The researcher did a descriptive qualitative study utilizing two instruments from Lucy M. Montgomery's original novel "Anne's House of Dreams," which was first published in 1917 and had 275 pages. Meanwhile, Maria M. Lubis released a 275-page Indonesian translation in 1998. According to the findings, there were 146 data points for idioms and 26 data points for culture-specific things. The most common translation approach utilized was Translation by Paraphrase, and the least common was Translation by Omission, according to the initial statistics on idioms. Meanwhile, the second set of data on Culture-specific Items revealed that Transfer was the most regularly utilized translation approach, while Deletion was the least. Finally, the most often used category for classification was Ecology. Overall, we believe that this study will aid readers in comprehending translation.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the types and functions of euphemism expressions used by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a political debate text, and also to reveal the differences between men and women in the use of euphemisms under the theory of language and gender. This study used descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences uttered by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a political debate and were collected by transcription technique. The data then were analyzed in the form of euphemism guided by Warren's (1992) model of euphemism and the functions of euphemism by the theory of Ryabova (2013). The result found 25 data of euphemisms. There were 10 euphemism expressions used by Donald Trump and 15 euphemism expressions used by Hillary Clinton. The result showed that women used euphemistic expressions more frequently than men because women prefer to be more polite and less direct directives than men.

Abstract

This study investigated the students' perception on using Google Classroom (GC) for learning English at SMAN 2 Sungai Raya. This research was a descriptive study with a quantitative approach; survey method involving 146 eleventh grade students at SMAN 2 Sungai Raya. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for the close-ended questions. The findings were presented the total mean score of five indicators of close-ended questions and distribution frequency table based on the theme of open-ended questions. The result presented that the total mean score of each indicators showed positive responses. Those were the usefulness of GC features (M=3.72), the ease of use of the features to motivate the students (M=3.71), Students’ participation (M=3.66), and students’ satisfaction (M=3.54). These can be approved by the students’ statements that learning English using GC was fun and improved their English reading and writing skills. The result showed that students had positive perceptions towards the use of GC.

Abstract

The problem in this research is: what are the implications of philanthropic attitudes related to character education in Indonesian literature (novels)?. The aim is to find out the picture of generosity contained in Indonesian literary works related to character education. The benefits of the results of this research are as reading material or additional knowledge in studying and understanding literary works, especially events related to the generosity of figures in Indonesian literature. The method in this study uses a qualitative approach and the data of this research are in the form of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues of characters in Indonesian literary novels. The research data includes: items of philanthropy theory and character education as well as data sources, namely the text of Indonesian literary novels. The results of this study are expected to be used as an additional basic reference concept for researchers who are interested in further deepening literary research, especially the disciplines of philanthropy and character education. This writing produces kindness to the poor, kindness in prescribing medicine, not being arrogant, caring for abandoned babies, caring for others, helping sick people, helping children whose fathers are in prison.
