Abstract

Tik-Tok application as teaching media is fit in with the students’ need and interests. The goal is to develop Tik-Tok application as media for teaching Speaking at the level of senior high school. Research and Development focus on the steps how to develop Tik-Tok media in the teaching of Speaking. The finding show that Tik-Tok media is needed in learning speaking with the score of 85%. The result of compatibility is also absolutely agreed that Tik-Tok media is compatible with the students’ characteristic (85%). The expertise judgment of Material and Media validate Tik-Tok media with the criteria of “very good” in the aspects of content and video application. It means that the development of Tik-Tok application is feasible to be used as media on Speaking class.

Abstract

The teaching method is one of the contributing factors to successful English language learning. The appropriate use of a teaching method is one of the ways to enhance learners’ speaking skills. The present study aims at reviewing the use of the Audio-Lingual Method (ALM), one of the teaching methods to enhance EFL learners’ speaking skills. The present study employs library research to delineate the use of ALM to enhance learners' mastery of speaking skills. The data were obtained from documentation study and previous research findings and further analyzed qualitatively. Therefore, it reviews the brief of ALM, the purposes of ALM. Moreover, it scrutinizes the strategies used in ALM, the benefits of using and the implication of using ALM in classroom teaching. Finally, some important points on the use of ALM are highlighted in the conclusion part.

Abstract

This study aims to describe teaching techniques for writing skills in The Fourth Semester Balikpapan Foreign Language Academy. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. Sources of research data are events, informants, and documents. Collecting data from observations, interviews, and documents. Data is analyzed by reducing data, displaying data and verifying data. To show the truth of the data using triangulation data. The results showed that the techniques used by lecturers at Balikpapan Foreign Language Academy in teaching writing skills were using pictures, discussions, making groups and corrections, and presentations. The purpose of using techniques can make it easier for students to develop writing skills. The students' responses to each technique were interested and happy. Problems faced by lecturers such as passive students, vocabulary and writing structure problems, students’ difficulty developing paragraphs, and time constraints. Solutions for teaching writing skills include the lecturer encouraging students to be active, repeating the teaching of language and vocabulary structure, giving examples of making paragraphs using the correct tenses, motivating students to increase vocabulary, and the lecturer providing opportunities for students to practice writing not only once.

Abstract

Given the swift currents of globalization and making it easier for foreign cultures to enter and influence the younger generation in Indonesia, especially children. In addition, teaching materials are also needed whose approach is in accordance with the times. Therefore, the researchers developed an elementary school teaching material that was in accordance with the independent era of learning society 5.0 based on local wisdom. The general objective of this research is to produce a product in the form of teaching materials for writing children's stories in the independent era of learning society 5.0 based on local wisdom. The specific objectives of this research are (1) to produce learning materials for writing children's stories in the independent era of learning society 5.0 based on local wisdom, and (2) describing the feasibility of teaching materials to write children's stories in the independent era of learning society 5.0 based on local wisdom that has been developed.The research model used is the Borg and Gall research model. The research model used by Borg and Gall is the Research and Development (R & D) approach. The results obtained from the validation carried out by content (material) experts, namely 87% with the validity level being quite valid with small revisions, and validation by learning media experts, namely 85% with the validity level being quite valid and requiring minor revisions. The results of the development of teaching materials for writing children's stories in the independent era of learning society 5.0 based on local wisdom for elementary school students, especially grades IV until VI in Malang is at 83%, which means that the teaching materials for writing children's stories are suitable for use.

Abstract

This study aims to portray the resilience of Using culture through a phenomenological study of 'street singers' (pengamen) in Banyuwangi. The street singers of Banyuwangi also colore the richness of Using culture and appear to present Using ethnic songs in expressing their artistic activities. The influence of global culture is increasingly difficult to be blocked [1] [2], meanwhile geographically, the location of the cultural existence is precisely at the crossroads of two major cultures, namely Javanese and Balinese cultures [3]. Qualitative research through phenomenological studies was conducted through in-depth interviews with cultural actors (street singers) and the Using supporting community of Banyuwangi. The data is then analyzed through the sequence stages: (1) transcribing the recorded interview results to written form, (2) bracketing (epoche), (3) taking an inventory of important statements (horizonalization), (4) formulating into the meaning (cluster of meaning) and (5) performing the descriptions of the essence. The results of this study cover two important things. First, Using culture can survive because of the aclak (active), bingkak (creative) and ladak (innovative) spirits of Using cultural actors. Second, the acceptance of the Banyuwangi community in general for the artistic expression of Using songs due to the consequences of the defense (uri-uri) spirit of the community. This study concludes that the preservation of Using culture is based on the internal spirit (active, creative, innovative) of cultural actors and external spirit, namely the process of preservation (uri-uri).

Abstract

This study aims to find the ability, the problems as well as how they solve them in writing cause and effect essay. This research used descriptive qualitative. The data were obtained by analyzing the students’ essay writing based on Jacobs et al, assessing rubric instrument, calculating questionnaire from 32 respondents, and transcribing interview from the English teacher. The subject is the students of eleventh-grade SMAN 1 Kediri. The result showed that the ability of students in writing cause and effect classified as “Good” based on the means score of the students’ cause and effect essay. It was found twelve students had problem in language use, seven students had problem in mechanics, there were six students had problem in content, five students had problem in organization and two students had problem in vocabulary. Also, there were three kinds of solutions offered by the students such as using internet to access various source, using dictionary, and practice writing more.

Abstract

In English language teaching, cognitive linguistics has played an important role in classroom activities. This can be the depicted in the use of the textbooks. In this study, the textbook used is English for international Relations book, a part of English for Specific Purposes series published by Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. Two of the features that chime cognitive linguistics principles are metaphors and categorization leading to prototype. Meanwhile, one of the clashes that is apparent in the textbook is the use of English which is unnatural, one of the factors is the textbook is used in a non-English speaking country. In the end, there are some suggestions on how to deal with the tenets of cognitive linguistics for the features that still clash with the principles of cognitive linguistics. First, it can be done by introducing some words that may have different meanings if they are added with different prepositions. The second example might be adjusting the use of the pictures and illustrations with the text and context. Also, the learners are suggested to know the patterns of the target language as they are different from their mother tongue.

Abstract

This study aimed to ascertain vocational EFL teachers’ perspectives on the development of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) resources in vocational schools. It employed a mixed-method approach in which data were collected simultaneously using an open-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The study involved 95 English teachers from vocational schools in two cities of East Java, Indonesia. Among the participants, four were invited to participate in an online interview to discuss their perspectives on the characteristics, use and development of MALL material for vocational students. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics. The analysis results showed that more than half of the respondents agreed that MALL resources were more accessible (65.4%), easier to generate (65.4%) and more successful at improving learners’ autonomy (73.1%), compared to traditional materials. Additionally, 40% of teachers thought that MALL materials could be used to promote classroom interaction, and it was much easier for teachers to provide immediate feedback through mobile phone. In summary, 42% of teachers agreed that MALL resources could aid in foreign language acquisition. Due to students’ proximity to technology and mobile devices, teachers recognized that MALL materials can be applied inside and outside the classrooms. Therefore, vocational EFL teachers must be able to develop and implement MALL materials in their classrooms.

Abstract

In the social study of language, linguistic politeness has played a central role. Politeness in speaking English is also part of sociolinguistic and pragmatic learning. Each country has a variety of cultures and language accuracy in communication. Unfortunately, most learners don’t speak English based on the sociolinguistics features and it is influenced by the culture, gender, language style, and domain. Therefore, there are still some issues to the practice of politeness linguistics to the English as a second language. The study of qualitative research was used in this study method. The purposes of this research are to inform eight theories of politeness application, the concept of face in politeness, and various types of politeness which are also explained by the division and classification of politeness. To support the students’ information about politeness in linguistics, some existing research information is discussed in this research.

Abstract

The recent article intends to describe the application of grammatical cohesive devices on the articles of Bog-Bog Bali Cartoon Magazine and to figure out the effect of grammatical cohesive devices on text to be coherent and unified. The article uses library research with collected from written texts. The data are qualitative data taken from Bog-Bog Bali Cartoon Magazine which were published in 2003. The articles are written texts. The Text is realized by 38 ranks (non-embedded) clauses and 6 ranks shifted (embedded) clauses. There is also cohesion between elements in each text of Bog-Bog Bali Magazine. The use of reference such as personal (e.g., we, us, their, them, it, etc), demonstrative reference (one, the, that, this), comparative reference which shows degree of comparison (e.g., same, finest, most, latest) is often used in the articles. In fact, text one consists of 37 elements of anaphoric reference, 7 elements of cataphoric reference and 7 elements of exophoric reference. . In summary, it reveals that grammatical cohesive can make the text coherent and unified.
