Abstract

This study aims to uncover the language strategies of resistance used by Wiji Thukul in his poem Nyanyian Akar Rumput through a critical discourse analysis approach. Data obtained from the poem's text as the primary source are analyzed using Fairclough's critical discourse analysis framework, which encompasses aspects of text, discourse practice, and social practice. The results of the study indicate that the symbol "grassroots" represents the common people who possess collective resilience and strength in facing it. Metaphors are used to construct an image of injustice while simultaneously sowing a spirit of resistance, while calls and appeals function to form a collective awareness. The choice of simple yet meaningful diction strengthens the emotional connection between the poet and his readers. These findings emphasize that language in Nyanyian Akar Rumput serves not only as a means of aesthetic expression but also as a political instrument to articulate a counter-discourse against the dominance of power and drive social change.

Abstract

Feedback is one of the crucial elements that determine the quality of the teaching and learning process. In the EFL writing learning realm, second language educationalists need to be more conscientious and selective before capitalizing on specific feedback types appropriate for learners’ writing learning contexts. One of the rewarding types of feedback approaches worth further activation in second language writing learning dynamics is peer assessment. Previous researchers contended that peer assessment could potentially promote emotionally-supportive and positively-sound writing learning dynamics in which EFL learners begin cultivating robust motivation to practice their writing skills to the utmost development. This small-scale library study employed a thematic analysis to analyze the findings of 20 previously peer-reviewed scientific articles. With the support of a thematic analysis, the researcher is more likely to yield more precise, credible, and contextualized results since the reviewed findings are categorized into identical research themes. From the thematic analysis research results, peer assessment is proven to be an expedient pedagogical approach to be internalized at the onset of second language writing learning dynamics, as this strategy is a propelling force for strategic writing development, academic self-regulation, writing performance, confidence, and learner collaboration. From the above-depicted research outcomes, it is indispensable for educators to ascertain the meaningful use of peer assessment in order to promote fruitful writing learning outcomes in the presence of heterogeneous learners.

Abstract

EFL students must improve their argumentative essay writing skills in order to cultivate critical thinking. Fifteen college students participated in the treatment because of their deficiencies in argumentative writing. The teacher began by delivering the lesson in the mother tongue. When it was put into practice, the students wrote argumentative essays in their home tongue. Strong external validation is required for the endorsed ideas. Citations were applied to the targeted notion in order to achieve this goal. The pupils had to manually translate their writings into English because of the subject matter. However, it is necessary to proofread the document for correct grammar usage. The pupils used a grammar checker app to meet this requirement. Making the content easy for readers to understand is crucial. The pupils used the paraphrase app in order to meet its requirements. The teaching-learning process data was then subjected to a qualitative analysis. The use of paraphrase tools, translation strategies, and bilingualism were then discovered to be beneficial for students' development of argumentative writing abilities. It encourages further observations from other researchers and could be used by educators to teach related subjects.

Abstract

This study examines the personality structure and defense mechanisms of the main character in the novel Tatkala Leukemia Meretas Cinta using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The novel was chosen because it vividly portrays psychological conflicts experienced by the main character when faced with a profoundly painful reality. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis approach. The data consist of narrative and dialogue excerpts that reflect the psychological aspects of the main character. Data collection was conducted through library research by reading and analyzing the novel in depth. The findings were then interpreted using Freud’s concepts of the id, ego, and superego, as well as defense mechanism theory. The results show that the main character’s personality structure consists of the id, dominated by emotional impulses such as anxiety, fear, and the need for self-preservation; the ego, which mediates rational decision-making; and the superego, which guides moral and spiritual values. The character employs six defense mechanisms repression, sublimation, rationalization, displacement, reaction formation, and regression to cope with psychological distress arising from life’s hardships. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of psychological representation in Indonesian literature and serves as a reference for future studies exploring the intersection between literature and psychology, particularly in examining how individuals confront trauma through psychological defense mechanisms.

Abstract

This descriptive study investigates the integration of peer and teacher assessment in evaluating oral presentations among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) undergraduate students. The research followed a mixed-methods approach aiming to a) analyze the characteristics of peer feedback comments, and b) examine the alignment between peer and teacher scores to assess grading validity and reliability. Data were collected from 50 Spanish students over three academic years (2020-2021, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025), comprising 341 peer feedback forms that included both Likert-scale scores and open-ended comments focusing on four criteria: language use, task achievement, fluency and pronunciation, and communicative resources. Quantitative analyses were conducted to calculate means, standard deviations, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Cronbach’s alpha values. Results indicated strong alignment between peer and teacher assessments in 2020-21 and 2024-25, but a moderate correlation and lower reliability in 2023-24, suggesting inflated peer scores. A qualitative exploration through content analysis and categorization revealed consistent feedback themes across years, with fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation being the most frequently mentioned strengths and weaknesses. These findings suggest that, when supported by training and structured rubrics, peer assessment can be a valid and reliable complement to teacher assessment in EFL oral presentation grading.

Abstract

Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become part of daily teaching, questions arise about how teachers and learners can preserve emotional connection and ethical awareness in language classrooms. This study explored how EFL teachers and learners in Shiraz experience care, empathy, and human presence while using AI-supported tools. Guided by the framework of AI-informed Loving Pedagogy, it examined how both groups respond to the emotional and moral changes brought by digital mediation. Fifteen teachers and twenty learners participated in interviews and reflective journals over four weeks. Their narratives were analyzed thematically, leading to three main themes: Emotional Authenticity in Digital Interaction, Ethical Tensions and Affective Fatigue, and Reimagining Love through Technology. Results showed that both teachers and learners made conscious efforts to keep warmth and personal meaning alive in technology-rich settings. They often described a need to “sound human again” after AI-generated responses and felt torn between efficiency and emotional depth. Some also found new ways to express care through creative and ethical uses of AI. The findings suggest that love and empathy remain vital in digital pedagogy and can guide more ethical and sustainable AI use in language education. Teacher education should include emotional reflection and critical AI literacy to help educators design learning experiences that remain truly human-centered.

Abstract

This paper examines Posey's selfless actions, namely her readiness to make sacrifices, as a major character in Mitch Albom's For One More Day. Emotional empathy and a strong moral commitment are frequently present in altruism, which is characterized as unselfish care for the welfare of others. This study uses a qualitative yet psychological literary analysis to look at how Posey's self-sacrificing actions, whether they be financial, emotional, or physical, show what true altruism is all about. Posey continuously puts the needs of others before her own, from taking on dual parental responsibilities to facing social shame and working nonstop to maintain her family. The results demonstrate that Posey's sacrifices are based on resilience, responsibility, and true love. Her character serves as a reflection of the transforming potential of caring and emphasizes the inner strength needed to continuously give without expecting anything in return.
