Abstract

The sonnet “If Thou Must Love Me” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning is one of the sonnets from the Victorian era which is part of a collection of sonnets entitled Sonnets from the Portuguese which was published in 1850. The author performs an annotated translation of this sonnet to explain each word choice and meaning in the translation. The author translated this sonnet using the translation technique popularized by Molina and Albir to find out the exact meaning of this Old English sonnet. The result of this translation shows that this sonnet uses the Petrarchan pattern, but with a slightly different part of the sestet from the general Petrarchan pattern, namely cdcdcd. The author also finds that this sonnet does not only contain the meaning of love, but also fears and hopes. In addition, the translation technique that is widely used in the translation of this sonnet is the variation technique followed by calque, common equivalent, compensation, reduction, modulation, and transposition. Keywords: Sonnet, Translating, Petrarchan.

Abstract

Letter translation is still under-researched until now, while it is important for translators to discover the translation strategies often applied in this text type translation, especially for official letters. In Indonesia official letters are often translated from Indonesian to English, and this paper aims to reveal the translation strategies used in the translation of those official or formal letters. This study analyzes three data of formal letters and their translation by using the descriptive qualitative approach. The results show that official letter translation applies domestication as the translation ideology and the communicative translation as the translation method. To conclude, letter translation is more suitable as target language-oriented translation since letters should be communicative and understandable by the target readers when they are translated. Abstract

This study examined the translation of the information structure in Arabic into Indonesian. The transfer of information structure in the two typologically different languages will cause various kinds of problems. Arabic is a flexion type, while Indonesian is agglutinative type. This study investigated two main things: how is the form of the information structure of Themes and Rhemes in Arabic (SL) and Indonesian (TL), then how the information structure is developed in a pattern of development of themes (thematic progression), whether there will be a shift in translation from Source Language (Arabic) to Target language (Indonesian). The research method used in the study is divided into three main stages, the first stage of data collection using the observation method of linguistic units found in Al-Hikam aphorisms (Arabic - Indonesian). The second stage of data analysis using the Spradley model, namely: domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and analysis of cultural themes. The third stage is reporting the results using a narrative form which is expected to be the basis for recommendations for translators to be more careful and pay attention to the details of the information structure in the translation process. Keywords: Al-Hikam Aphorism, Arabic-Indonesian Translation, Information Structure, Theme-Rheme.

Abstract

Translation has, today, become a vital activity that cannot be separated from students in their learning process and also in other aspects of life. In translating, students often rely on Machine Translation (MT) as it is time and energy efficient. However, people have come to doubt the translation quality of MT. Meanwhile, the accuracy of information could only be achieved when translation results fulfill certain criteria. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the differences in translation quality from English to Indonesian produced by students and MT. To this end, the research applies the qualitative comparative analysis to obtain the different translation results of students and MT. This study is conducted at a public university in Serang–Banten, with the participation of 5 students. Data obtained from the translation of students and MTs are then analyzed by applying Nababan’s theory (2012). The analysis succinctly reveals that students obtain higher average scores than MT in three aspects, namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability. In the fourth aspect, the analysis uncovers that both students and MT actually produce similar errors, namely in word choice and sentence structure. Finally, this study suggests that MT should be used to complement students' translation. Abstract

Euphemism and dysphemism are frequently used in news text, since they are believed to be able to attract the readers. These kinds of expressions are also commonly found in Indonesian Secretariat Cabinet (Setkab) online news. The research aims to find out how euphemistic and dysphemistic expressions are translated from Indonesian to English in the news. The methodology used on the research is descriptive qualitative, through mapping and analyzing 20 news texts and their translations. The researcher used Technique of Translation theory that was proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) to analyze the translation techniques applied in the translations. There are thirty-four expressions containing euphemism and dysphemism in thexts analysed, most ofwhich are dysphemized and modulated in the target texts. The ways the two figures of speech are translated in the target texts, however, do not reflect the particular purposes commonly associated with them, namely toadd or neutralize connotations. Rather, they mainly serve to add variations to the texts. Keywords: euphemism, dysphemism, technique of translation, news, text
