Abstract

This article presents useful information for translating cooking recipes from English into Indonesian in terms of the characteristics of linguistic and cultural aspects in cooking recipes, the challenges that cause translationdifficulties, and the strategies to overcome challenges in translation. This article focuses on student translators. Student translators have to translate many kinds of texts, one of them is cooking recipes (procedure text). In order to translate the texts, an understanding of the language structure of source text and target text and the culture aspects are crucial. The challenges that cause translation errors in student translators will be examined through the perspective of the author's teaching experience and a review of the appropriate literature, and then, some tips and strategies will be offered to solve problems in translation. Keywords: English-Indonesian translation, teaching translation, language teaching, cooking recipe.

Abstract

Literary translation transcends the boundaries of a mere translation discipline and assumes the profound responsibility of preserving narratives that serve as foundational elements of human civilization. Combining the skills of translation with the artistry of creative writing, literary translation surpasses the conventional expectations of a translator. A literary translator bears the weighty task of not only conveying the message and meaning of a translated work but also encapsulating its aesthetic essence. This scholarly article delves into anexploration of five primary challenges encountered in the realm of literary translation, alongside an examination of fidelity as the fundamental principle governing the translation of literary works. It is crucial toacknowledge that the notion of an ideal and flawless literary translation, and consequently an ideal literary translator, remains elusive. Rather, the pinnacle of literary translation lies in the production of a translationthat progressively approximates the intended meaning and form of the original work. Abstract

Translation assessment is important for two reasons: For creating the dialectics between theory and practice and for purposes of setting criteria and standards in translation assessments, in particular when we compare an SL text and its different TL versions (Machali, 2009:153). There are various theoretical frameworks that can be used in this context, among which are the Skopos or the Functionalism theories. However, it is not easy to apply these into practice, particularly when we are faced with loss of meaning that cannot be judged as ‘mistranslation’. Some of the general phrases that some evaluators often use are ‘too literal’, ‘not natural’, etc. These criteria, in fact, only emphasize one aspect of meaning, the experiential (i.e., who does what to whom, why, when andhow). As such, assessors have ignored the fact that a text is a realization of three aspects of meaning: the experiential (which is a part of ideational meaning), interpersonal, and textual (Halliday, 1994; Mathiessen, 1992;Catford, 1965). In this framework of SFL, these three aspects of meaning must be considered together as ‘criteria’ for translation assessment. There are challenges and problems in this application of SFL, particularlywhen we are faced with such notions as ‘naturalness’ in translation or ‘translation as ideology’. Key words: Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Exeperiential, interpersonal, textual, mistranslation, translation as ideology, criteria, assessment.

Abstract

Translation methods by Newmark (1988) have long been known among translation academicians and perhaps by a small number of translation practitioners. However, the clear differences between one method and another, especially between semantic and communicative translation methods as the most ideal methods, have not been shown indepth and in detail for the Indonesian and English language pair translation. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a translation analysis to show the differences in the application of those two methods. This study applies a descriptive qualitative approach in analyzing an academic text translation which contains both translation methods. The results show the semantic method is applied in the explanation with no figurative language and little or no cultural content, while the communicative method is applied in expressions full of cultural content. Therefore, with the semantic method, the meanings and the messages between the Source Text (ST) and the Target Text (TT) are quite close, whereas with the communicative method, the meanings of the ST and the TT are quite different despite having the same messages. Keywords:semantic method; communicative method; translation methods; the Indonesian and English language pair.

Abstract

Machine translation (MT) is fundamental in translating from source to target languages. This demand has indicated exponential growth over the past years due to the rapid development of this artificial intelligence. With the increasing use of MT, where the MT itself has its benefits and downsides, researchers have actively conducted MT research for more than seven decades. This paper addresses three key research questions: the theoretical frameworks adopted in MT studies, the benefits and drawbacks of MT in both language learning and professional translation. After discussing and summarizing the three key research questions, the author concludes and ponders implications for MT users and trainers and new directions for future research. Keywords: Machine translation; translation in language learning; professional translation; benefits of MT; downsides of MT.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the perceptions of students of D4 in English for the Tourism Industry Study Program at the State Polytechnic of Malang on the use of Google Translate (GT). Twenty-one students were selected as the research participants. The instruments used were questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires and interviews were about the students’ perceptions regarding the students’ frequency of using GT, students’ agreement or disagreement regarding the use of GT, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using GT. The qualitative-descriptive analysis found that most respondents indicated a relatively high dependency on the use of GT in completing their translation assignments. The results revealed that all participants sometimes used GT and felt confident. Even though using GT provided several disadvantages, some students still believe GT offered more advantages than disadvantages. However, most students stated that they edited the translation results from GT before submitting them. Keywords: Google Translate, machine translation, translation.

Abstract

One type of translation tasks commonly carried out in many government institutions in Indonesia is translation of names of government institutions from Indonesian into foreign languages, notably English. This type of translation arguably poses not only technical challenges but also nontechnical challenges. This paper seeks to review challenges related to this type of translation. The research adopted a qualitative descriptive method by making an inventory of listing and presenting existing translations of the names of government institutions, proposing translations of the names of government institutions that are not yet available, and explaining problems identified in the existing translations, as well as problems related to the translation of the names of the government institutions. The result of this research shows that most government institutions do not have English translation of the names of their institutions. The existing translations of the names of several institutions even also differ in terms of translation style. To that end, it is important to not only encourage government institutions that do not have yet the official translations of their institutions to have them translated but also to harmonize the already existing translations in order to create uniformity of the translations of the names of all government institutions in Indonesia. Keywords: translation, government, names of institutions

Abstract

Indonesian language, rooted from Malay language, has been continuously expanding. One of its expansions is shown from the increasing Indonesian vocabularies, from 23,000 words in 1953, increased to 91,000 words in 2015, and 120,468 words in 2023. Currently, the Pasti (Padanan Istilah) application consists of 169,059 terms from 48 domains. However, this number of vocabularies is still very limited if we compare to English vocabularies, which amounts to more than 1 million words. Therefore, we need to enhance Indonesian vocabularies by absorbing words from local and foreign languages. The purpose of this research is to develop Indonesian vocabularies so the users can easily express their ideas. The research methods used are 1) exploring the vocabulary from local languages in Indonesia and 2) developing acronym words. Based on the study, it is found that there are foreign words with inefficient equivalents, words which need to be created, possessive pronouns which need to be created, and phrases which can be used as words. Based on the results of the study, 40 neologisms are developed, namely: blero, solet, belat, bukel, modulel, tacap, tavis, tadik, barmas, parmas, rancikom, pilkirting, pilkirren, ka, da, madang, madlam, ceriyat, kabis, bukabis, bilat, bili, bicah, bijil, binap, bipos, bineg, bikha, bikhanol, bikhalog, bisikba, silmaan, mangun, gakima, gasima, dikel, sebel, sikba, natur, dan konni.
